Pickering mango and some mature trees

Ate my first pickering mango yesterday. It had very good flavor with absolutely no fiber.

On a side note, I work in Tampa, and yesterday I found a yard that has a mature Jaboticaba tree that was probably 25' tall by 20' wide. He also had a 40' avocado loaded with fruit and two very large mango trees loaded. There was one tree I could not identify. Had leaves that appeared like mamey but I could not imagine a mamey surviving this far north. The tree was about 30'. Maybe I'll ask the owner.

So is it true that the pickering has a strong coconut flavor?

My guess is loquat.

I have a tiny Pickering, glad to get more positive input.

chezron, supposedly they are supposed to be exactly that - kind of fat and compact. Here's a link to a comment about this variety on GW, below. Jsvand, OMG...sorry to hear that! Thank goodness we didn't have close to 60 mph...we did have some very gusty winds for a little while but probably closer to around 40-45mph...I did lose a couple of mangoes from the my inground Cogshall. I did have several potted plants fall over...but luckily the potted mango trees stayed up! The Glenn is still attached to the Dolly and have it surrounded with Cement Blocks...thank goodness! We did however get a little over 2" of rain in less than 24 hours so not sure how that will affect the flavor of the mangoes...I hope it doesn't have a watered down taste? I hope you keep the rest of the ones that hung on! Mangodog...I will be sure to post pictures of the mangoes cut in half...It may be green,lol...if it falls off before its ripe...but promise I will post pictures!

Oddly enough, I got a great mix of flower types on the panicles: M1, M2, and females. The problem was a complete drop of pollinated females...not sure why this was, but they all dropped. Much to my surprise, my emperor also flowered on one tiny panicle, and somehow the female on that panicle got pollinated...I didn't even know the panicle was there until I saw the little fruit growing...very odd. So I will probably get one home grown lychee to eat this year. @Ch3rri- cross pollination in lychees is a good idea if you have the space for it. @Jay- Don't give up on the sweethearts. You've been able to keep the hak ip going, so why not a sweetheart?

Hello Friends, MangoDoc - Thanks for the Compliments, they are always nice to hear. Pugluvr - Thanks, I am doing eveything I can in hopes of having a few when it comes time to harvest. There are probably about 25 right now. It is protected from the #1 enemy - The Wind. It is in the Greenhouse and seems to like it in there. Mangoperro - I retract my previous statement about none of your Pickerings making it. It's nice to see you've got a few. Congrats! As for the shape of some of them, I can only chop it up to something funny happening during pollination, or lack thereof? It is strange as some of them are completely normal and others are really odd shaped. Any guesses out there? Thanks again, Jacob

Wasnt a loquat, familar with those.

I detected a coconut flavor, not overwhelming. But the overall taste was very good. I just noticed that Pine Island added pickering to its variety viewer and rated it 5 of 5 for flavor.

I got to try Pickering last month when I visited the fruit and spice park....was pretty impressed, nice flavor even if the fruit was somewhat un-attractive/dull. Tree was quite small but very productive. I personally didn't detect the coconut overtones that its claimed to have but nevertheless thought it was a good mango.
