Mango yes. Lychee no. The other guys have gotten lychees. If your plants are flowering, you are doing things right. Do a search on NTM's posts for pollinating lychee flowers.

what kind of mangos and/or lychee trees do you have...how tall do you keep them. how long before you got some matured fruits from them.

Nam doc mai & cogshall mango. Hak Ip lychee. Should start fruiting within a year or two depending upon conditions...unless you have a lengthy piece of future firewood in a container that was given more than enough chill hours and still doesn't bloom.

Lychee bloomed after a year at about 3' but I didn't get any fruit because I didn't know *bleep* about pollination.

I always push Manila as most reliable to fruit and taste sweet container Mango. Larger fruited types have been done outdoors in soucal..but Manila seems fastest,easiest to succeed with in less than ideal climates.

My emperor lychee flowered/fruited the first year I bought it (the following summer). It was a 7-gallon to be fair though. My sweetheart now flowers yearly after 3 years...even though I won't get one *bleeping* fruit from it this year. My Brewster is coming into it's own as is my Hak ip...they should start flowering in a year or two.
As for my mango (Mallika), well, I'm fighting a war of attrition with anthracnose...just carved it up, and spayed a home-brew Bordeaux mix on it last week. Thus far, it has never flowered after 3 years.

No sweetheart lychee for me either. I do think I need another variety lychee tree to get a mix of male and female flower for pollination. I did pruned my lychee 1ft shorter since it was too tall.

Me and Sweethearts have not been good together. The partnership has been dissolved twice now. Takes me a while, but I get the hint.

Oddly enough, I got a great mix of flower types on the panicles: M1, M2, and females. The problem was a complete drop of pollinated females...not sure why this was, but they all dropped. Much to my surprise, my emperor also flowered on one tiny panicle, and somehow the female on that panicle got pollinated...I didn't even know the panicle was there until I saw the little fruit growing...very odd. So I will probably get one home grown lychee to eat this year.

@Ch3rri- cross pollination in lychees is a good idea if you have the space for it.

@Jay- Don't give up on the sweethearts. You've been able to keep the hak ip going, so why not a sweetheart?

Yes, I need to cross pollinate since my sweetheart early blooms were just all female flowers. Not until almost the end of the bloom cycle that I have a lot of male flowers. Then I got more male flowers than female flowers. Some got pollinated but then the tiny fruits eventually dropped. I really have no room for another tree. Unless I move a few more of my other trees down the basement...lol. MY deck is getting full too. I need to make room for my BBQ grill. :)

even with multiple lychees you may have the same timing problem, but then again all you need is one male flower when the females are in full swing

maybe when your tree gets older and more developed the larger branches will bloom more idependently

The problem with sweetheart is that it tends to lead with the females. Cross pollination is the only good solution to get reliable fruit set from them.

I agree with North. All the female flowers bloom first and then after the female almost die out then come the male flowers. And then most of the blooms are male with only few female. Having another tree that bloom with mostly male flowers at the beginning will sure help with the pollination.
