Is Lemon Boy the next to go?

I've had at least one of my all-time favorites disappear.

That was Dona (hybrid). Yes, I've seen the post on

"HG-HB" but have not read most of it. So this is not

a comment on that topic. It does happen though that there

have been several hybrids that I like.

Now, I've been having trouble finding Lemon Boy. If you

read blogs, forums, literature, etc. you will see that

it has been generally in high regard. Until recently, one could

easily buy a packet of seeds and I have actually seen

plants for sale at such places as Home Depot. This year

and last I could not find a packet anywhere. In 2008 a

friend found one packet on a display from Livingston Seed

at a Tractor Supply store. This year, nothing locally, but

I did order two packets on line from Burpee.

Guess what. Germination rate ZERO. Also the seeds were

packed in a sort of generic envelope with no picture on

the front and no "planting information" on the back.

The situation I am seeing indicates to me that Lemon Boy,

as good as it is, has fallen out of favor with seed houses

in general and may not be available as a hybrid in a very

short time. Does anyone have a comment on this or an observation?

Moving on, I've tried what I can find of Dona seeds from

those who have an OP variety and have been rather unimpressed.

Yes, they have been OK but only just. They just don't have the

complexity of flavor that I liked so much in the Dona hybrid.

So now I'm worried about Lemon Boy and it looks to me as if

I will have to find someone's OP variety and hope I like it

or make my own. So here's a question on that procedure.

I know I could just save seed after reasonable precaution

against cross-pollination and after several generations I

would have something. I suspect most of the OP varieties

available are a result of this method. But I have seen

somewhere (possibly in this forum) a (or several) method

that involves various levels of back-crossing along with

the appropriate record keeping. I'm unable to find that

information again. Does anyone have a reference to that

or knowledge of it who could point me in the right direction.

All help will be deeply appreciated. Thanks.
