When to plant annual Poppies?

Hi , I'm from California and am sending my friend some annual papaver plants in 4" pot size to friend in NY Zone 6 . Can you tell me when you folks usually plant your poppy seedlings ( not seeds) ? How late can you plant them without them bolting? Thanks much in advance!

I don't grow poppies myself but quite a few people do grow them and a lot of people here wintersow them. The ones that are wintersown are really tough little plants and are usually one of the earlier seeds to germinate and be planted out. Normally people here consider Memorial Week-end as the planting kick-off date but hardier plants can be planted out much sooner. Last year I was planting out my seedlings in late March and early April. Hopefully someone who does grow them here will post a reply. I think lblack grows poppies.

They will bolt if the pot is too small or if it gets hot. Usually if you get them out there before it gets warm, they will do fine. Last year I grew annual poppies and started them about month before my last frost, then put them out immediately after the last frost date. That was plenty of time for them to bloom normally before it got hot. They are fast plants to mature. This year I will be growing some and I have not started them yet. Probably won't until the end of the month at the earliest. Depends on how warm this month is.

seedboy, I don't know that there are 'best' annuals. But there is a very long list of great performers under a wide range of conditions. You'll need to evaluate the locations on your property for such factors as sunlight (how long and how much), soil conditions, and drainage. In Florida, you'll have plenty of options for the warm and hot months (spring and summer) as well as the cooler times (fall and winter). For example, this is not the time of year, in your location, to buy a flat of pansies. Though they may look wonderful at the garden center, they will only perform well for a very short time due to the heat. Fall is the time to plant them, for an all winter-long dispay. If you visit the Florida Forum, be sure to ask what their FAVORITE annuals are. I'm sure that people are likely to list such plants as marigolds, zinnias, gomphrena, Catharanthus roseus, portulaca, and lantana (which is a tender perennial but used as an annual.) And MANY more.

Poppies when they grow from seed have the leaves right above the ground and the rest is below ground. Because the part below the leaves goes straight down to the root it is hard to see how low they should be planted. Poppies even ones grown from seed occasionally flop over. If yours have the leaves well above the ground then plant them lower. You may not have planted them deep enough to support the plant but that has nothing to do with planting tomatoes. Tomatoes can tolerate having their stem burried and will grow roots along that stem. Only plants in the tomato family have this ability. Annual poppies do not have to be started ahead of time. Planted from seed outside after danger of frost is past they will be up and blooming in about 6 weeks. You can even plant them earlier because a light frost won't hurt them. I always have them blooming in my flower beds and I haven't planted any in about 10 years. I don't deadhead them and they reseed themselves. The seed goes through our cold winters and sprouts when the time is right

Vvesper, 1) Some folks say that Annual Poppies resent being transplanted which is why they should be planted out when they are relatively small. I plant mine out HOS when they have their true leaves. If a few in the hos don't make it, some always do. Just make sure you water in the days following the planting out in the gardens. IMHO, I think that is where a lot of the problem is in regards to these. BTW, California P. are less finicky. 2)Californias should bloom all season for you, but others such as Shirley, Angels Choir, etc. may not. I keep mine blooming for quite some time by deadheading them. The cooler the summer, the longer they go. Last year I culled them in early August but that was simply to make room for wsown perennials.
