Upstate NY Birds!

Hello all -- I know this forum isn't very active, but I just saw a Red-Bellied Woodpecker for the first time in my life and I am very excited!!!

I've seen Downy Woodpeckers around here quite a lot over the years -- they're very gregarious and will come to the feeders and hang around the yard.

Two years ago I saw a Pileated Woodpecker. OMG they are HUGE!!! and beautiful, of course! It's the only one I've ever seen.

The past two years I've seen a lot of Orioles (always on my fruiting plants!) and I've hardly seen those at all since I was a kid. And when I was young I'd always see Rose-breasted Grosbeak but never see them anymore. The Red-Winged Blackbirds were abundant when I was young, and after not seeing any for decades, they have returned!

I'm not a bird-watcher but I do enjoy seeing and hearing such pretty birds around here. One of these days I hope to actually see a bluebird in NYS -- I've only ever seen them in Massachusetts, and since they are the official NYS bird, I really think I should be able to see one here! :p

Anyway, that's my excitement for the morning. :)

Isn't it delightful to see and hear the birds?! I live in Schoharie County and we have bluebirds often. Construct and install a few houses and have bird baths set out and it won't be long before you'll see them. Baltimore Orioles love my hummingbird feeder (it looks like a big orange). I don't see as many rose-breasted grosbeaks as I did when I was kid either. Nor evening grosbeaks. Lots of woodpeckers of all sorts up here in the woods.

Here is my story about attracting bluebirds.

About 30 years or so ago, there was an article in the National Geographic magazine about how the bluebird population was declining due to lack of suitable nesting spaces (old dead rotten trees). It included dimensions and directions for building a bluebird house that would be attractive to bluebirds, and restrict non-bluebirds.

We had never seen any bluebirds around our place, even though they were the state bird.

My husband went out to his little workshop, and measured and sawed and hammered, and put one of those birdhouses together.

He went out to put it up, and as he was fixing it to the tree, there were two bluebirds flying around his head waiting to move in!!!

So that was pretty exciting, and well worth it. And if you want to see bluebirds in your yard, I recommend putting up a house specifically designed for bluebirds. The worst that could happen is you will end up with a pair of bank swallows, but they are a lot of fun to watch too.

Appalachian zone 6 or eastern PA zone 6? In SWPA I have found elecampane, st johnswort, mullein, wild garlic, burdock, cleavers, clovers, yarrow, chicory, ginger (Canadian), nettles, any number of herbal ephemerals, cattails, abandoned lilies, abandoned roses, heal-all, ground ivy, plantains (narrow & broad leaf), goldenseal (no I won't tell you where & no I don't pick it), joe pye, wild fruits & berries all over, including spice bush, blueberries, cherries, plums, mulberries, elderberries... witch hazel (in abundance), cone flowers, mountain mint & lots more. The main trick to wildcrafting is to know what you're looking for. The Audubon society frequently sponsors walks that aren't just about birding--check your local chapter. Our state parks in this end of the state often have a print out of what plants can be seen in flower in the park at what time of year-- very helpful way to learn identification (& you can't--shouldn't-- pick them anyway, so you can go back & take a second look next year, too) Take a guide book (or two) & a camera & take pix of what you can't figure out to show someone later. Rules of polite wildcrafting were discussed above but I add that for every five plants you find in an area, take only one. If you can't find at least five, don't take any. If they don't look healthy, don't take any. DON'T STORE THEM IN PLASTIC for the ride home. Take a cotton pillow case or small muslin bags, rubber band them together & label them on site. (A lot of wilted plants look the same). If you're looking for flowers, harvest the flowers (leaving plenty to go to seed), otherwise, leave flowering plants alone. Roots should be harvested when the tops have died back in autumn, so you have to do a little planning to remember where you saw them. Wear boots (snakes) & take gloves (nettles, spiders, etc). And finally, take only what you need for the moment. You can always go back. As a matter of fact, you want to be able to go back. These places become your private reserves, as it were. And likewise, you become one of their stewards.

A few years ago me and my buddy were taking a late night drive in Lenox, Ny (it is in between Oneida ny and Canatosta Ny). We were going around a curve in the road when i saw a camel/dark tan colored big cat next to the road looking to cross. I thought I was crazy until my dads buddy who lives 5 min from sighting told me hes seen a couple around on his way to work. Now i have a more recent sighting on Lake road in Oneida ny. My grandparents live on that road and one day I was fishing oneida creek behind their house, there is about a mile in between the house and the creek with very thick woods. I was just fishing when I looked down and saw a huge cat like footprint in the mud at the creek bank, it looked pretty fresh so i decided to walk downstream towards Oneida lake. I walked about a half mile downstream until i saw a big cat identical to the one i saw on Buyea Road. It was moving very swift and quick, something ive never seen before. I watched it for about 10 seconds until it dissapeared into the woods. Mountain lions are far from ”extinct” in upstate NY. I believe there is actually a good population. There is so much hilly land up here and alot of deep woods for them to hide.

Thanks for your response. I will take new pictures as soon as I get back there. Each time I look at the next project I find more issues. Things that I should have seen but never did. I have owned this house for at least 15 years. I replaced the roof, gutters, boiler and had drywall placed over dark paneling that was added at some point over the plaster to the entire house. I spent months just fixing the drywall, because the guy I hired used nails through the paneling without ever taking off the trim or nailing the drywall to the studs. This was all done by me, without even a drill. It could be a nice home. I had a young mason put a coat of what is called "quick wall" throughout the basement". I also dug a 2 foot trench around the entire perimeter of the house to try to fix any bad exterior basement wall cracks. It doesn't have a wet basement, however, I believe it had and may still have structural issues. I was never a carpenter, plumber or electrician. I have no clue how to work with power tools, although, I bought some anyway. I just do not want to give up.

Here was the star of the garden on Friday: PINEWOOD HOLY SMOKE: I love the clean and crispness of the colors. In the am at 6 shaded at 6 am After work Here is my seedling which will get moved from the seedling bed and planted in better location for observation. BEAUTY IN MOTION clump HEMAN: Thought it did not make it after I really divided it for sales last year. BIG HEARTED MOTHER being back lite by the morning sun. CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS: New last fall. Here it is with some sun and then shaded at 5:00pm. Not very tall (12"). I am hoping for increased height once it gets established. I hope to spend more time in the garden today. I have a couple of visitors coming today to tour the garden. David

I am not a die hard bird watcher either but I do enjoy seeing birds other than house sparrows and starlings. Right now I just see the occational black capped chicadee pair and a few house finches. Soon the Ruby throated hummers will be returning and that is where my passion lies.

It amazes me that red-bellied woodpeckers do not have red bellies! :-) We have pileateds around our property (east of Syracuse, NY, country) but they never get close enough to see well, I just hear their calls. My daughter, in the poconos (on a mountain) has them close to the house all the time, lucky girl!

It seems like once you start noticing birds you then start seeing birds you thought were never there. It's a psychological thing I think. My DH is a big time birder. Most of our vacations involve birding. I'm not into as much as he is but I enjoy seeing the different species and their different behaviors. A lot of my garden planning is to include things that birds (and butterflies) will be drawn to. Enjoy the birds!

It's nice to know that others enjoy casual bird watching. :)

I knew that bluebirds need a specific house type because there's an area near here where NYS installed bluebird houses many years ago to see if they could determine the local population. I've never seen a bluebird there. I've also never heard of them liking rotted trees!

I don't get why a Red-Bellied Woodpecker is named that way either.... I had to look in the bird book to identify it and wondered why the heck it was called that. LOL!

Right now I'm anxious to see my first robin of the year!!! but for me that usually happens around March 22. :p
