new pics of lychee, mango, and persian mulberry

My tropicals are continuing to do well.

Both mango trees have little mangoes forming on them. incredibly, my sweetheart lychee which arrived from PI two months ago, appears to be growing a bloom pannicle which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever as they are supposed to bloom in december january. My mauritius lychee is coming to the end of its bloom cycle and it looks like about 20-30 female flowers will turn into little lychees. of those, the vast majority will fall off, but if i even get a single lychee out of the tree this fall, i will consider that a major achievement, considering how young the tree is and that i am growing it in NY

You have me jealous down here. I can't believe how many blooms you are getting on your lychee's so soon. Nice job.

Nice close-up pics. Finally got out the directions for the camera eh?! Ha! Those are some honking big blooms. See if you can get some individual shots of male and female blooms.

Thanks Guys! ( : Toai - The sale doesn't end until the end of this month. You should definitely get yourself a few tropical fruit trees! And, yes, this will definitely be a fantastically exciting journey for me! ( : ohiojay - I will research Puglvr's mango pruning. This will definitely help (as I know nothing about pruning!). Your greenhouse is fantastic! I am still envious! mango kush - They'll be wintered indoors. I still haven't figured out how I'll be doing that part. I'm lucky spring/summer is upon us! Harry - It's a good thing you suggested I repot both. (I was gonna wait). Right now, it's kind of yucky outside but the weatherman does call for sunshine in the next few days. I hope so! I will definitely keep you posted on their progress and post pics. Both the mango and lychee are from pine island. I've heard a lot of you talk about their place. So I am glad they're from a reputable nursery in Florida. It must've been destiny for me to find out about the sale! I will be doing a lot of research and asking a lot of questions! Hey js, I just bet you're done!! Keep saying it over and over, you might just believe it, lol...Congrats on your Lancetilla, post a pic when you get it. No, I have not done any pruning on this tree, that is why I LOVE this tree, for the way it seems to have a naturally nice growth habit. I have 2 Cogshall, one I bought at Lowe's in a 3 gallon pot, Lowe's gets their trees from Pine Island Nursery, it came with a PIN plant tag when I bought it. It was appx. 18" tall. Originally I had it in the backyard and later moved it in my front yard, very close to the house( 6 1/2 Ft away). Since it is a dwarf, I plan on keeping nice and pruned. The walls of my house should protect it from the occasional frost that we get here. Here is a before and after pics of the 3 gallon from Lowe's. Well, to pollinate, you first need to put on some cellophane wings and plastic antennae, then you need to make a buzzing sound to get the lychee flowers in the mood...LOL! Seriously though, I just use a small (10/0 size) paintbrush to collect the pollen off of the males, then apply it to the receptive females...piece of cake. Since you're so eager, I'll post what pics I have this week. I'll begin a new thread for them. I can't believe you found a company that would ship to you in the middle of winter. Which company was it?

hey lychee! wow the spirea sounds awesome! holliswood, queens. r u in brooklyn? an older, humble/starter cape with not enuf windows at all, the house can badly use a total renovation but i don't have the dinero nor the need for regalness right now. to top it off the previous owner had nothing but GRASS and weeds growing all over, not a single tree on the whole property. last yr i planted blue atlas cedar, var. leyland, carolina/arizona cypress, arborvitae, juniper, jew, var. eunymous, roses all around but if only they would hurry up and grow tall! so its taking ages to get rids of weeds that keep coming up, the place looks a hot mess still =( i put down 30 bags pine mulch last fall becuz the color matches the brick walls i put up, but that type sucks as it dries out to a pale white color and blows around all over the place, will def never use pine mulch again! ur mulch looks heaps better, yeah will look for a landscaper once i get around to pulling out more of the perpetually sprouting weeds that used to be the previous owner's entire "lawn". the only grace to the yard is from the container bananas, monstera, etc i just put out and it gets so cold at night and so sunny during the day, their foliage is looking a real wreck.... and i've never seen new york so perpetually windy since fall, is this el ninyo la ninya pinta santa maria weather or what?!?! pics r from december, not now. will probably have to take update pics soon, yard IS looking a better than these pics, but not much!!! still a looooong way to go to even be a somewhat presentable garden =L

Nice!! You guys get more blooms up north that I do in Florida, What's up with that?? Really, that's great!! Congrats, those are definitely blooms on your Sweetheart!

i have not come across pics that label male and female blooms so i dont know what they look like.

can you describe what they look like or provide a link?

( i dont hang around the mango blooms too long due to the rather unpleasant smoked salmon scented smell that is emited from the blooms!

Quit yer complaining! Can't smell any worse than that jackfruit or soursop!!! LOL! Whoops...strike that!

Did you get your Alphonso at Pine Island? I have been reading about them recently and they are now added to the list. They seem kind of tough to find though.

got my alphonso from Jene's tropicals.
Alas, of my 5 tropicals (2 lychees, 2 mangoes, and 1 jaboticaba), only 2 made it- fairchild mango and jaboticaba.

Not sure what exactly killed the other 3.

seeing those pics i posted made me pretty sad. the trees were doing so well in the summer

yes- as i said not sure of the cause- a few possible causes-

there was a sudden drop in tempreture in november- dont think down to below freezing but around the 35 degree mark-
i also repotted them before bringing them into the garage.
there was also little humidity in the garage- there may have been some type of scale attack on the mangoes.

anyway- i bought 2 new lychee trees and will try again
