Growing Tomatoes

do my tomatoes look ok

I planted these at the end of march dont have any growing lights on them and they wont get planted here in my area til memorial day weekend do they look alright this is all new to me growing them from seed this year instead of buying them already grown

It's a bit hard to tell but it looks like there were alot of brand new tender shoots and leaves that had sprouted that got some major frost/freeze damage. Seems like those may have come from a greenhouse or warmer spot and then were sitting out somewhere exposed whenever you had your last frost/freeze. Did you have a frost/freeze after they were planted? I'm sortof a weather nut and I know there were some frosts over here in outlying areas - but that was at the beginning of the month and we're usually a couple days later with respect to the weather where you are. You can snip off all the completely brown leaves and let them settle in and see how they recover.

That is a pretty plant. I see what you mean about it looking basil-y. Could it's feet be wet? I can't tell how big the container is compared to the plant, but I've had problems with overwatering a few peppers that I had in containers that were a bit too large for them. My leaves curled up, not down, though. You might want to check the soil a few inches down, and see how wet it is. Good luck!

Their eventual size depends on the varieties that they are. The "determinate" varieties typically don't grow very high. But the "indeterminate" ones can get to 6, 7 feet tall or more in the right condition. There are a varieties of support options, depending on both the size of the plant and on personal priorities and preferences. Seems the simplest thing for you to do now is to just attach the cages to something more stable like maybe a wooden stake screwed to the side of the wooden planter or driven deeply into the soil/potting mix or maybe attached to a permanent structure like a fence. The thing with the planters and especially the bucket is that if the container itself is pretty light even if a support system is attached firmly to the container, the whole thing might still fall over. It would be preferable to maybe drive a stake deeply into the ground right outside the planter but it may not be possible if the planter sits on concrete. I've put some of my containers next to a metal pool fence like the one linked below and attached my cages to it. Don't know what your yard has that is in a sunny spot. I have just purchased this adenium off of eBay and I just repotted it. Can anyone tell me if the roots look ok? I'm new to this and I don't want to kill it! How hard are the roots supposed to be? One of the larger ones was maybe the absolute tiniest bit soft. I apologize for the sideways photos. I'm new to Houzz.

There are many. Using those things like shutterfly and flikr are crap. I always see nothing but 404's and errors from people who try to use those sites.

A lot of people paste the URL of the web page, rather than the URL of the image, in the <img> tag. That generates broken images.

I personally prefer to upload images to my own server (growyourtomatoes.com) so I have complete control over the images.

They look quite healthy & happy to me. They should last until Memorial Day in those cups, also. =)

I would say the same as tn_veggie_gardener.

Only problem is the fact that you don't have grow lights...I would keep them on a south-facing window that gets as much sun as possible; otherwise they will get very leggy. Right now, they look good.

They look good so far, but you can't grow healthy plants to plant-out size without lights (or a greenhouse). fluorescent tube lights, keep the plants 2" below the tubes.
