Even tho she lost some of hers, Anne (Poochella) still shared Tubers with Gardenwebbers and friends last fall. And I just received a box full of wonderful varieties from her too! Regarding planting - I'm taking her advice. Will spend at least a few more weeks doing other things and studying up on each variety. Her suppler on a recent purchase says wait till May 1 to plant Dahlia tubers. Last year the ground was cold in Oregon well into May...and Lord knows there is enough to do, to pot on, and plant out other veggie and flower seedlings! And there is more Winter-Sowing, and indoor sowing and Direct-Sowing that can be done too - so I'll probably let the Tubers rest, except for fantasy-land photos on the Web. I do see one tuber sprouting however - photo below- so i feel your pain. It looks like this one wants a head start. So I may pot it up in a few days in a light sterile mix - and avoid soaking the soil, and still keep it in a fairly cool place. Then I'll try to tuck the entire contents of the pot carefully into the ground when it warms, to not disturb roots that may form. Wow, I only started my seeds last week. I have experimented with those Wall-o-Waters, after three years of playing with them I decided that they're not worth the trouble. They will protect against frost. I had a couple of test plants out a couple years back when we had that bit of snow in early May and they survived that too. But as digginthedirt says, the plants stop growing, and sulk if you put them out this early. If you put them out just a couple of weeks early with the WOWs (Memorial Day Weekend has always been the planting time for tomatoes around here, putting them out is extremely early) then you may get some impressive foliage grow, but by the time early July rolls around you can't tell the difference. You definitely are not eating tomatoes much sooner than you would otherwise. It sounds like you started your seeds too early. I've always regretted it whenever I've started them any sooner than the 4th week of March. It's hard to wait, especially if we get some nice days before that. It took me a few years of leggy plants before I could resist.

Hello, I'm in the same zone as you, and I typically start mine in November/December. Since it's only one more month, I'd recommend trimming the foilage back so that they can be kept under the lights. I've kept mine in much smaller pots with 5-15 seedlings in a pot, and have waited to plant in the fall before. (Mind you, I lost a few from doing that before) If you would rather them be outside, I'd recommend covering them at night with a frost blanket. For the first week, you might just want to take them out in the morning (when it is warm) to someplace shady and in at night to harden them off.

Wow! How old are they? I have a 3 mth old, 1 ft tall dwarf tomato that is flowering but that's because I lost half the plant 4-5 weeks ago. So age wise it's just right. Did you plant from seeds or from cuttings
