someone was looking for a grafted Manila/Philippine mango tree?

While I was looking for a Nam Doc Mai online, I stumbled upon a Philippine mango tree that is grafted on plantogram's website. It should be the same or very similar to Manila, I guess. I remember someone here hunting for it a while back ... hope this helps.

PS: I have a seedling Manila from LaVerne nursery. Maybe I will graft a Phillipine mango on it if the fruit is not great.

Hi Ashley. I'm ordering the Nam Doc Mai from Plantogram. They have larger trees. PI trees are still small and probably newly grafted. I don't think I will order the Mallika now since you have to know when to pick it and then have to wait until it ripen. If you pick it too early then it will taste nasty. If you pick too late, then it's not good either. So, I will stay with NDM. I really want a good looking mango that ripe on the tree with nice color and flavor....am I asking too much? LOL . I don't want to get the variety where I can purchase from the store.

nam doc mai is a definite 5 star mango in my opinion. excellent fragrant citrusy sweet indo-chinese flavor.

the perfect mango on the Indian side of the flavor spectrum that is small and fruits well is Carrie. Rich creamy outstanding complex mango flavor.

i remember in season i bought a big box of mixed mango varieties. i was eating so many different types of mango varieties that looked and tasted like Haden i couldnt even really distinguish them but i knew right away whenever i bit into a Carrie.

this season you can sample and compare the fruit for yourself.

they both are small trees but can be pruned to dwarf size. my biggest concern would be the taproot outgrowing the container and becoming spiraled, i never heard of anyone root pruning a mango taproot but im sure its possible, mangos are hardy and spring tends to work its magic on them if they are in shock.

what size containers do you think you are going to end up with it in ch3rri? i think it would ultimately be happy in 25 gallons. it would take a well draining soil to make that light enough to drag around.

Hi! Farmers prefer polyembryonic rootstock for uniformity. It makes pretty much sense for farmers who set out to propagate acres & acre of mango trees, making use of many of seedling root stock waiting to be grafted on to. They choose a variety of known-good & vigorous rootstock, and the only way to get uniformity of seedling is by, of course using polyembryonic seeds. The seeds have to be from a variety that is known to be a good grower. Like in the Philippines, farmers use carabao mango seeds which are polyembryonic, and happen to be good growers. Yes, they'll one day bear fruit that is true to type, but farmers still prefer to graft on them... They graft a carabao mango scion onto a carabao mango seedling rootstock. However, as a hobbyist gardener it probably wouldnt matter what you use as rootstock. As said, if you think your monoembryonic seedling looks vigorous enough to be used as rootstock, then go ahead and graft onto it. I have planted 5 mono seeds of mahachanok mango and they all turned out different. 3 were small, one even died, while two grew very fast. . It does take time to create rootstock from seed. Lots of time probably get wasted when monoembryonic seeds bear weak plants. As for choosing a scion, I would expect for you to get it (the cuttings) from a mature tree of known-good variety, or of the variety you desire and not from another recently planted seedling. That's because getting the scion from an already mature tree of fruit bearing age guarantees that your resulting grafted tree will fruit much, much sooner. Best regards! Zig

Everettsky - I worked for Philexport - an umbrella organization of Phil. Gov't to assist philippine exporter products in the globe. Another organization is CITEM, which assist exporters in the promotion and marketing of there products. Since Carabao Mango is an export fruit crop of the Philippines, they branded carabao mango Philippine Super Mangoes (PSM) or sometimes Manila Super Mangoes. Philippine Super Mangoes is just a brand created by CITEM for mango exporters much like of Calypso Mango or B74 mango of Australia. Under this brand, there are carabao mango strains that are grown and sold to exporters such as Lamao, probably the oldest carabao mango strain that was named after Lamao Experimental Station in Bataan which was under the American Agricultural Department when Philippines was under American regime. As far as Iam concern the Philippine Super mangoes you have eaten in Luzon are probably the Lamao strain. As far as the sweetest mango in the world, Sweet Elena Mango, a carabao strain was the one mentioned in the Guiness Book and not the Lamao. This carabao mango strain does not seldom get to local market because almost all grown Sweet elena mango in Zambales in the Philippines get exported to Hong Kong and Japan. You see, Hong Kong fruit traders who import carabao mango strain only get mangoes from zambales because it is known for the best grown mangoes in the Philippines. For the taste of Sweet Elena Mango, I've tried it and bought fruits on the site of the mother tree which is about 100 years old. Its sickening sweet with a hint of tartness and a super strong aroma. This variety was released in 2005 and was not released by the Phil. Govt due plant protection issues of the owner of the strain. I bought 5 grafted trees of this variety and a better variety that they discovered near there trees in the mango farm. The new variety is codenamed LL07. It is a pity that these varieties will not be sold to new mango farmers for upgrade of the mango farm. There is a growing interest in growing Edwards mango in the Philippines. Edwards mango is a cross between haden x carabao mango, and like edwards is shy bearer because carabao mango is a biennial fruiting mango variety. It fruits every 2 years only. Thats why edwards mango is a less yielding cultivar or less productive fruiting mango. To make it productive, you need to spray with flower inducer like carabao mango like in the Philippines. I think Edwards mango will have an advantage with Carabao mango because it has a hint of Haden mango sweetness that makes it Unique. And is more disease resistance. It's grafted. I bought it from Jene's tropicals about a year and a half ago. It is really doing well and is one of my few mangoes that don't seem to get any black mold. I was thinking of chopping it down to just a couple feet, but I just can't make myself do it. It has a nice thick trunk. If you want it we could always just trade for some fruit when I am down there if you don't have any plants to trade.

I just did half-a-dozen grafts last week; three on seedlings I raised (two Indian-type and one Philipine-type) which were cleft grafts. The other three were onto my in-ground Manila (now about 2.5 years old and reasonably well-branched), one a cleft on a terminal and two adapted veneer grafts on branches close to the trunk as shown here: http://www.avocadosource.com/Journals/FSHSP/FSHSP_VOL_58_PG_176-180_1945.pdf I've never done any mango grafting before, so I have no idea whether anything will take. Like avocado grafts, I think it's important to expose a lot of wood, so if you're doing a cleft graft, make the "blade" or chisel cut very long. Wrap very tightly. If you have leaves on your rootstock below the graft, leave them on while the graft is maturing. Keep things warm if possible, but out of direct sun. As someone already mentioned, the terminal scion needs to be almost ready to pop. For the adapted veneer method it seems you don't even need a terminal scion, but that's what I used. Good luck!

Thanks cherri and mango_kush. I will try to read more about Nam Doc Mai (seems to be the perennial favorite) and Carrie. Maybe another 2 for my collection!

Mango_Kush, so, you think that the Carrie is more on the Indian side of the flavor spectrum? I am thrilled because the Alphonsos and Kesars are both hard to find and hard to grow around where I live. But, Carrie, I might be able to special order at my local nursery and it is small too.

And I am living proof that you can root prune a mango tree - I inadvertently root pruned a Kent seedling tree (2 years) old when i barerooted it to repot in a better mix - half of the tap root broke and fell off in the process - the tree is still healthy and happy in its new pot a few months later. Mangoes are really sturdy and hardy trees - almost indestructible (and they can take quite a bit of root and limb pruning) - except when it comes to cold temperatures.

yes Carrie definitely has very complex Indian flavors. some people accustomed to simpler flavored varieties like Haden or like simple flavors may not appreciate it as much, it definitely is unique. Julie is another excellent mango with a complex spicy, lavish flavor. eventhough Julie has more pronounced flavor, i would recommend its seedling Graham because its a better producer

I read this description on plantogram's website for Carrie - "fiberless Florida cultivar that is sickening sweet and delicious as can be." That definitely reminds me of indian desserts! i am going for it and ordering a Carrie!!

Bryan- I ordered the 3 gallon. Mickey told me the tree is like 3-4 ft tall. I like the Nam doc mai because you can eat this green or ripe. I really can't wait...I got the tropical fruit bite again! OMG!!!!!!! :( I think I will never stop.
