Comments (4)That is entirely up to how you prune it, both above and below the soil line. It can be kept very small, under a foot, and in a container that holds less than a gallon of soil, for years and years if you prune roots and top. If you do nothing to the roots, the tree will grow quite large before it succumbs to some problem related to constricted roots and dies. More important than how large a container a few years down the road, is what size does it need now. To place a tree in too large a container, especially if you're using a potting soil with a large organic component, is to tempt fate in the area of root rot and compromised root function/metabolism.
