Comments (19)Is the trumpet vine that you see wild, the Campsis radicans (orange trumpet creeper)? We used to have them growing wild in Louisiana. Up every telephone pole, tree, etc. The bees, hummingbirds and ants love them. They do root easily. Just be careful if you take cuttings. I had some in my car and looked down and zillions of fire ants were coming out of the blossoms yikes! Coral honeysuckle grew practically wild too. My peruvian type NBC is a more columnar type cactus and took about a yr and a half from a cutting. It is off one of my mom's at the end of her driveway. Hers is about 12 ft tall and gorgeous in full bloom. Mine is in a pot because when I lived in LA it would rain a lot and they need excellent drainage. It sat out in brackish/saline flood water from hurrican Rita for 5 days and I thought it would be toast but it bloomed like mad that year!! Some of the other climbing types of cactus Hylocerus undatus (an orchid type) and Queen of Night aka selenicereus grandiflora (not orchid type), people let climb thier oak trees or other structures . The orchid types like more water and richer soil than others. Another NBC climber, Epiphyllum (orchid type) grows well in hanging baskets, they come in all sorts of bright colors and some bloom during the day as well. The Epiphyllum oxypetalum is white and blooms at night. You can hang the baskets from your trees as well. Confederate jasmine is pretty fragrant at night too. As well as polyanthum (pink bud/winter jasmine), this one really perfumes up after dark -found that out last spring when I brought one in the house to perfume my room. The later it got the more it smelled and when the lights went out phewww! Finally I had to put it back out LOL! You are gonna go crazy in FL growing and having access to all the plants they have there lol. I really miss the south. ~SJN...See MoreFall Blooms and pods
Comments (19)Awww kylie, that's gonna suck, all that digging! All my plummies are still in pots above ground. Next year I should sink them! I have another inflo on Cerise and one on Graveyard Yellow (celadine). Kristi I read in some plummie book, that when the Hawiians had graveyards (back in the day-lol), they planted gobs of plumeria around the gravesites to help improve the smell. Alot of them were yellow and thus came the name of Graveyard yellow. I think it is the same one that is Celadine. Maybe your dh knows for sure? Hi Sandy! *waves* :) Yes I still have that plummie, I got a late start this year so it didnt bloom yet but it has grown quite a bit. I have been wondering how you were... I am glad to see you posting again! I had a lot of trouble keeping buds on Naughty nick in all it probably dropped well over 70 buds all summer. They would grow big enough to start coming out of the calyx and then all drop off. Drove me nuts. I think it just likes the cooler nights now. Least now I know why its Naughty! I got that ginger rhizome from walmart grocery lol. I was told they treat them with something and it wouldn't sprout. It takes a long time but do sprout. Just get a nice firm tuber with a couple 'eyes' (nubbie sprout thingies) on it. I don't know what's wrong with photobucket lately, it is making me mad lol. I can't enlarge anything either. ibaroo I know about the dh eye rolling thing lol. I think mine just gave up by now lol. I can't let him buy me any plants cuz last time he got on ebay, he bought stuff we already have LOL!...See MoreMandevilla laxa
Comments (7)I never had any before last year. But...last year I put together a moon garden of sorts with all my pots lol. I had cestrum nocturnum, stephanotis, brugs, datura, moonflower vine, indian night jasmine, maid of orleans jasmine and the mandevilleas were sorta in the middle of it all. Well it attracted the hawk moths by the hundreds and I saw them at the mandevilleas. So I am pretty sure that it what pollinated them. I had the pink spotted hawkmoths and a plain brown kind. The pink ones really seemed to like mandevilleas so if you can attract those maybe they will help you out lol. Hopefully someone else can tell you some more about the specific mandevillea laxa, I'm afraid I havent been able to help to much ;P ~SJN...See MoreNyctanthes arbor-tristis Suprise Seedpod
Comments (4)Thanks. I wonder how large the seeds will be? I will probaby plant them shallowly after I follow your method. I don't know how long they take to flower from seed. I have tried to root it before but not much luck. I am gonna try again in the spring. I got my plant from zone9tropicals. They send a pretty good sized plant for the price. They are out of stock right now but you can ask them when they would have them again. Several yrs ago I had one that I bought at Logees. They don't list it in the catalog any longer but I know that they may still be growing them and may sell them if you email them. That is how I got mine. They sell them in very small pots though....See Morehighlandsgardener
