Whoa, go a little easy on the nitrogen. You'll get all greens and no fruit. Tomatoes like to have a little more phosphorus than nitrogen. I'm sure you can find Miracle Gro for tomatoes there. Also, if I might add, make sure you've got adequate drainage, holes in the bottom, and don't overwater. When overwatering occurs the leaves turn yellow and some folks mistake that for lack of nitrogen. You can imagine the rest. Best of luck to you.

Tomato seeds contain all the nutrient necessary to feed a seedling. The two greatest errors made by new growers are overwatering and overfertilizing. Let the plant feed itself. It is, after all, a weed. Keep the temps cool.

So would using only MG for tomatoes once a week be sufficient? Drainage should be great. I created a false bottom in the pots so about the last 4 inches has no soil.

OK, here goes. Use MGro once every two weeks, by the directions. Keep the soil moist but not soaked in the meantime. The plants will get extremely hot if left in the Florida sun all day so provide them with a little cooling once in a while. Either paint the planters white or surround them with aluminum foil so's the soil doesn't overheat; you can actually cook the roots. Don't water the leaves, especially in the hot sun. Mulch around the surface with grass clippings or compost, not black plastic. This helps keep the soil cool too. Attempt to find some fish/seaweed emulsion as it provides essential micronutrients. Whew, that's all-I feel like a tyrant. Best of luck with your tomatoes.

Thanks for the help. I have all of the containers on wheels, so when it really gets hot in the summer I am planning to move them to an area that gets filtered sunlight in the mid afternoon but still get good morning sun. I will paint them white too if it helps. Thanks.

Agree to go easy on all the fertilizer. Jungle Growth brand mix already has time-release fertilizer added to it so "mixing in some 10-10-10, and maybe putting a ring of it around the plants as well. I was also thinking of using MG once a week or so." would be way over doing it. ;) No additions are needed now.

Either go with the MG for Tomatoes or a similar product (there are many) every couple of weeks as suggested above or plan to mix in some additional time-release fertilizer in 6-8 weeks when the plants begin to set fruit. I prefer using the granular time-release in containers as it doesn't leach out of the soil as rapidly as the liquid does. Your choice.

A little fertilizer is good but a lot is not good. ;)
