While researching Money Maker came across this list. Interesting, Money Maker is supposed to be resistant to blossom end rot and is good for humid tropical conditions.

I'm not clear on what you're saying...that this is a list of tomatoes developed in Australia? Or that it's a list of tomatoes available in Australia?

Burbank would be a clue that the latter is the answer.

If you look at that URL is does say "tomatoes want to grow", which another clue that it's not a list of tomatoes
developed in Autralia.

I'm with Trudi in not being clear on what your point is? I read this as one guy's list of what varieties are available in his part of Australia and the names they go by. Ok.

So what point am I missing? His list of where seeds are available in Oz? His claim that Moneymaker is supposedly resistant to BER? That's like saying Yellow Pear's taste like wallpaper paste. Personal opinions. ;)

Silvia, These will all be new for my Florida growing & testing, I've grown some of them up north but not here and I want to try them out to see how they do here. My favorite is TOMATO.... anything TOMATO is YUMMY!! except those red tennis balls they sell in Publix as tomatoes in disguise. I want to try these as fall/winter tomatoes and then try the same ones again in spring as spring/summer tomatoes to see which ones are best for each growing season. Yeah yeah I know it.... another experiment. LOL Bamboo, Yes it is early, I'm trying to do testing in my screen-house as to how early I can start the fall planting. The screens limits the sun to 72% so I'm not sure of timing for anything. I will plant 2 to 3 seeds per pot at the beginning of every month (JULY, AUG, SEPT)just to check on my best timing in my screen-house. Paula, You're welcome. I knew you'd had nematode issues and that Jo is now battling them, so figured a list might come in handy because it is likely other members of this forum have nematodes too. Lots of the gardeners here in our county have very sandy soil and nematodes plague them, so even though I personally don't have to deal with them on our land (so far), I have many friends who do. The entire line of Goliath hybrids carried by Totally Tomatoes is very good and I think all but three of their Goliath hybrids are nematode-resistant and I consider those Goliath varieties about as close as you can get to "a sure thing" with bybrid tomatoes. I don't think any Goliath type I've grown has ever disappointed me. I don't think I had any Goliaths in my garden last year, but I started several for friends who are nematode-challenged last year, and they just loved them. I remember the first year I started tomatoes from seeds, Paula. I was so excited because I thought I'd done something really special. Later on, after I realized how easy it is to do, I realized I wasn't quite the brilliant horticulturalist I thought I was. : ) Still, I love growing my own, although every now and then I'll buy a tomato plant because no matter how many different varieties I plant, you just know I'll walk into a store and see one I wished I'd planted and didn't. Tim has learned that even if I grow 100 varieties from seed, I still have to look at every plant in every store we're in "just in case", as in "just in case" they have one variety that I don't already have growing. He has the patience of a saint! Keith, Don't I wish I did! For hail, just wait for me to transplant all my plants into the garden. It will hail here within 24 hours of that and then it won't hail again the rest of the year. So, if you wait for the hail storm after I plant, and then you plant your plants, you're home free and clear and with unshredded plants. For heavy rainfall, I hear you loud and clear. In 2006, our exceptional drought of 2005-2006 ended with 9.25" of rainfall in one day late in April, and 8" of that fell in less than 4 hours. My plants were not amused. However, most survived. I figured the garden and I had survived the worst thing that Mother Nature would throw at us....until we received 12.89" in one day in April 2009. My rainfall solution is raised beds. They don't guarantee heavy rainfall won't drown your plants, but they help a lot. IF I couldn't have raised beds for some reason, I'd deal with the ever-present threat of flooding rains by grafting tomato seedlings onto eggplant rootstocks because eggplant roots tolerate much, much, much wetter soil than tomato plant roots can stand. Jo, You give me too much credit. All I did was sit here with some old notes I had in notebooks and compile a list, and then I flipped through a couple of catalogs to get the right 'VNF' codes to go with each variety on the list, and picked up and added some newer releases or some whose disease rating has changed as additional tolerances were bred into new versions of a given variety. Jay, I am glad you have some ideas for heirlooms that resist nematodes because I don't have nematodes, and most of the folks here around me with nematode-infested soil only grow hybrids. I know some of our neighbors had nematodes when I was a kid, but I wasn't paying attention to what they were growing back then....I wish I could go back and spend one week with all the old gardeners I grew up around so I could pick their brains and ask questions now that I didn't know to ask back then. Hello Ray. Thanks for posting this thread. It is a timely reminder I think. Here is mine. Burnley Metro (BM) is a semi determinate regular-leafed early-midseason tomato with red globe-beefsteak tomatoes of medium-large size. Flavour is mild, with slightly acidic overtones. Clearly a variety suited to Southern Victoria. It is approximately 1 week later than Burnley Surecrop (BS). For all intents and purposes BM is much the same as Burnley Surecrop in appearance and flavour. BM produces a large number of medium sized red fruit in a short period of time. It has some susceptibility to early blight-like Burnley Surecrop. Burnley Gem (BG) is a determinate regular-leafed early tomato with medium-large red globe shaped fruit. Taste is very similar again to BM. BG displays some susceptibility also to early blight as well. BG is a good substitute for both BM and BS where space is limited or indeterminate/semi-determinate habit is not desirable. Will have seed of BG and BM for you Ray at Marysville-oh, and by the way, also will provide the grower of BG this season at Marysville as well! Cheers Craig

Totora, I won't comment on your mouth, but one does get very used to the heat of chillies and gradually you can take hotter and hotter chillies. So a chilli that may have been hot a few years ago may now seem pretty mild. I don't think your chillies are losing heat by being in the same spot for some years. Ray, I don't have 500 seeds of Tasmanian Blushing Yellow, as requested in your original post. I'd say there are about 200 seeds. But there's a tiny green tomato still on the bush that was bagged. So I might get seeds off this one, if it does grow a bit more and ripen up a bit before the plant dies or the first frost hits. I've also taken cuttings and one of them is starting to flower. I should get some fruit off this one. Will put it in the greenhouse in the next few weeks. I will be growing this tomato again next year and probably get more plants of it in the ground. I still have 3 of the original seeds (I think, would have to dig out the seeds and count them) and I'll try to germinate and grow these. Together with the saved seeds from this year.

I/ve seen the list before in a slightly different format and I can tell you that the Aussies who read/post where I do don't think much of Mr. Campbell, who authored the article. (smile) It's a list of varieties that are available in Australia, and many of them were bred there, but there's a large infusion of British varieties as well. Note that for many varieties he indicatres what seed sourve to use for a specific variety.

There is no variety that is resistant to BER every time that variety is grown, except for most cherry varieties, b'c there are so many variables that can induce BER and those variables can differ a lot from season to season.

I can grow variety X one summer and it deveops lots of BER and I can grow the same variety the next summer and there's no BER.

I have no point. Do I have to have a point? This is just a list of tomatoes commonly available in Australia. I thought it would be of interest. Where did I say they were developed in Australia. Just looking at the list you can see many names commonly seen in England and the U.S. Sheesh.
I was just trying to find out why several articles said Money Maker was the most popular variety in Europe and England, even though its not a taste test winner. Maybe the BER resistance is one reason.

californian, not to worry. As you said you don't need a point to post something. You thought it might be of interest so you threw it out there which is good. Just because it doesn't make sense to some doesn't mean it won't to others. Unfortunately these type of comments can discourage folks from posting which is not good as the reason for most forums is to share information even if it doen't make sense to everyone. Ami

The only problem I see with this posting is that the article posted was written by a crappy writer. Everybody thinks they are a budding author.
If the author had done a better job, I don't think anyone would argue with the post.

If the author, editor, or publisher had put a title on it, such as a cut down version of this, provided just above the article as a link:

"Tomato cultivars : An alphabetical list of locally available cultivars :Tomato cultivars listed by season, from very early to very late",

all this would have been avoided, and Gardenweb users could look at what is available "down below", instead of having stupid arguments.

Of course not although most forum posts do - a point or a question - and sometimes it is difficult to sort out what that point or question is. But that wasn't MY point.

As I said "what am I missing?" so I was clearly assuming that I was misunderstanding or missing what you were seeking with the post and was not criticizing you in any way. And no one said that YOU said "they were developed in Australia" so no need to get bent out of shape about that part either.

This is just a list of tomatoes commonly available in Australia. I thought it would be of interest.

Great. All you had to do was add that to the original post and everything would have been clear to all.

Misunderstandings are apart of this medium so it helps avoid them when both parties make the effort to be clear and give each other benefit of the doubt rather than taking it as some sort of personal attack.
