Update-Julie Mango seed-Unknown Mango

I posted back in February that I had a mango tree which was grown from a julie mango seed three years ago.

Well here are the fruits of this unknown mangoes.

Anyone venture a guess? I have no clue what type they are. I think they are about halfway mature.

They are not going to be any certain type. They will always been unknown. You just have to hope they end up tasting good and then having a certain name does not matter. I would guess they will have some resemblance in taste to a Julie but there is no way to tell until you taste them. Did it hold a lot of fruit for you?

According to several web sites, Mallika is navite to India, which makes them "Monoembryonic", so my guess is it will NOT grow true from seed? @mangodog thanks for the information, multi grafting is something I want to try eventually, i guess choosing the right early , mid and late season varieties that have the same growth , Id agree with tropicalgrower the valencia pride is like the godzilla of mango trees, the one i planted at my mothers house, is about 40-45 ft tall, and only about 10 years old. its easily visible on google earth lol but who knows how these cultivars will react sharing the same root stock.

jsvand5, it has dozens of fruits on it and is still flowering and fruting.
I guess since it is an unknown, I can name it myself so I will call it 'three-year mango'. :)

puglvr1, I hope it does taste good otherwise it will be called 'chop-down' mango because the tree is too close to my house to keep if it has lousy fruit.

If it taste good with put me on the list for some "3 year mango" budwood. It would be great if it tastes like julie since the normal Julie is supposed to be tough to grow down here with the humidity. It is obious yours seems to handle the FL weather just fine.

Haha, I purchased a mango tree years ago from the flea market. I do not remember the type it is or its name, but it looks just like that! I have been trying to find out its name. I will post pictures up. It does look similar though.

They are shaped like a Julie, if you're lucky they'll taste like a Julie.

The fruit clearly bear some resemblance to Julie, particularly in the beak area. I've noticed Julie tends to produce fruit that is of two shapes: the first I would describe as 'boxy' or 'rectangular', and the second shape more rounded. Yours appears to be closer to the second shape.

Julie trees tend to be weak producers and I gathered from your original post that this tree is producing pretty well for its first crop, so that would be one characteristic it inherited from a different parent in addition to the size/vigor of the tree.

Another thing about Julie is that while it has excellent flavor, the trees and fruit are VERY susceptible to anthracnose, especially in Florida where the climate is very humid. So that's another characteristic to watch for.

Being that Julie came from the Caribbean its difficult to say what the parents of Julie were because its not a descendant of the Florida cultivar line. Let us know how the fruit tastes when it ripens and if it has any fiber.

Thanks for the imput folks. Very interesting information.

Well the fruits are no where near ripening yet..at least so it seems. Impatience made me pick a large one to see if I can ripen it off the tree but I am sure it won't have the true flavor. It will be a while before it ripens because this thing is greeeeennn! But oddly enough, the sap smelled like Julie. So keeping my fingers crossed that (a) it is NOT stringy and (b) it taste like Julie.

You could put the picked fruit in a paper bag on the counter to ripen more quickly. An apple slice in there would ripen even more quickly. Check it daily if so.

Well guys, a bit of sad news. Apparently the tree, even though it is large, had too many mangoes on one particular branch. That branch, about 6' long, snapped like a toothpick from the weight of the mangoes. Now I have about 30 mangoes that I have to ripen off of the tree. The tree is still full and the other branches have lots of mango on them but I will have to prop the remaining branches with sticks to help support the weight. Still waiting to taste this mango as the saga continues.............

You might want to think about thinning the crop a little on the remaining branches. One good storm and you may lose a lot of branches.

Trini, one thing you can do if you have too many of them is to cut them cup and freeze the ones you don't eat.......that is of course, if they're good.

I think I will have to freeze some. I am also thinking about making some chutney with some of them as a condiment. I have put props on some of the other branches to help them with the weight. I don't have the heart to thin out any. :)

Well, here she is.....

Well, it was an interesting experience.

Smell-smells exactly like Julie mango.

Texture-exactly like Julie mango

Taste-80% of it taste like Julie mango but it is missing the really sweet taste of Julie. Then there is a slight aftertaste. I have to keep in mind that it was not tree ripened so it may not be at its fullest. I will wait to see how the ones that ripen on the tree taste.

squam256, no, I guess that's not bad considering the trees didn't cost me anything to grow.

murahilin, I think it's got at least 3 weeks before they start ripening. It had a second flush of blooms and therefore those mangoes are still growing of course. The poor tree is propped up with sticks because I admit, I am too vain to take some of the fruit off. :)

trini, thanks for the update. Like you said the tree didn't cost anything, and I think you are pretty lucky to get a seedling to produce fruit so early. Your tree ripened fruits might be a lot better. Keep us posted.

trini, if 80% tastes like a julie w/out being tree ripened i think you have a WINNER especially considering that the fruit is not stringy AND it is obviously very prolific unlike Julie.

you have have the next "it" mango variety...what are you going to name it?

Ok folks, here is the final verdict. I tasted the tree ripened mango. It was excellent!
Taste - 80% julie 20% some other good mango :)

texture - smooth and buttery, not stringy

color when ripened on the tree - yellow, no brown spots

Seed - small and flat don't know if it's viable.

I think the tree is a keeper. Will need to be pruned yearly though.

Tammysf I am calling her 3-yr mango or maybe Juliette. :)

Boom1, based on your video link, it sound just like my mango! Wow, I can't believe it.
The only differences I noted when I checked Graham on PI website is the time of ripening and the color of the flesh. Mine is not dark yellow like in PI's pictures. The shape of my mature mango is more elongated too, as opposed to the rounder shape of the ones in PI's and other photos online. I am even more confused. :)

color of flesh can vary with sun of course and as you may know all mango trees blossomed out of season this year in south florida so i wouldnt judge it on that.

my little 3 foot julie mango tree dropped its ripe first mango last week. i planted it about 8 months ago.

Graham is a seedling of Julie so it may be identical, im not sure how mango trees seeds inherit traits, does it have to do with cross pollination of another variety or is it just a crap shoot like passive recessive genes in humans?

either way i guess the best way to find out would be to hunt down a ripe Graham mango and directly compare them.

Most mangos that originated in Florida (literally dozens of varieties) have been named after the person who grew the original tree. So if you submit it to the Florida Mango Forum (don't know if they're still active or not) or the FSHS you can have it named after you.

Squam256, I think I am too shy to gain such notoriety. LOL :) If it isn't a Graham, I am good with calling it Juliette. But let's hope it doesn't suffer the same fate as she.
