Hot Weather Tomato Varirities

So I moved to Prescott AZ from TX and looking to hear your list of good hot dry weather tomatoes.

Being from North Texas was plenty hot, but also humid. Now here in AZ I planted my favorites I started from seed like;

Cherokee Purple

Sweet 100 OP

Sun Gold

Marianas Peace

Arkansas Traveler

But I got a feeling some of them may not like bone dry warm climate of Prescott AZ. Not as hot as Phoenix, but typical Summer day is 90 to mid 90's with a couple of 100+ days.

The link below has some previous recommendations for other AZ growers in it.

We used to have a great thread here on Growing tomatoes in AZ. I'll see if i can find it. If i recall correctly it is the planting time more than the variety that is crucial. It will likely be very different from what you were used to.

Here are some discussions about best varieties as well as some care tips from over on the AZ Gardening forum that might be of help to you too.

Dave thanks, Actually here in Prescott I think it is too early as this area can get frost and snow in April. In fact when I bought the property last year was April 17th and it snowed that weekend. Just a little north to Flagstaff and up to the Grand Canyon was a whiteout blizzard during that time. It ruined our GC trip

Three years ago I went to Phoenix On Memorial day weekend. We had to stop in Gallup NM due to winter blizzard and they closed I-40. Next morning they reopened I-40 and it snowed all the way past Prescott and changed over to rain around 3000 feet as we dropped into the valley going down I-17. We stayed 3 days in Phoenix, and it never got above 70 degrees for the whole Memorial day weekend. That weekend it snowed in Las Vegas on Memorial day weekend, and Denver CO was buried in snow.

I see you got a couple of answers to your post of this question over on the Tomato Forum here. Some also suggested you check with the folks on the Florida Gardening forum as they can advise you specifically about timing in Florida. From what I have read in the past from Florida Gardeners, yes it is too late for planting now to beat the heat and the blossom drop that results. You have 2 tomato growing seasons down there - Fall and Winter to very Early Spring. As to container sizes, Better Boy is a very large indeterminate variety that can easily grow to 6-8 feet tall or taller and will need a very large container (7-10 gallons minimum is common) and good support. i'd add to this list: cherry tomatoes (never too late, if you can find plants or get them started indoors), okra (mmmmmmm... okra.... spiny AND mucilaginous, as manature pointed out to me recently), yardlong beans, and sweet potatoes. check out southern exposure for all these, except sweet potatoes, which you can start from store-bought ones (just google: "starting sweet potato slips"). i have yardlong beans in my yard (just one plant right now) -- it's a beautiful plant, with great flowers and it sneers at heat and humidity. you can eat it young as a green bean, or let it go and harvest the peas (beans) to eat fresh. they are really tasty either way (but i am a bean lover).

I know this is late (nearly 1 1/2 years late). I live in Las Vegas (Sunset Zone 11). The Tomato Lady recommends Hawaiian tomatoes. I personally have had good luck with Hawaiian, Patio, and all heirloom Varieties from Italy that I've tried. I have successfully Grown the following Heirlooms in the Vegas Desert (I'm at 2900 ft elevation while the Vegas Valley is closer to 1800 ft.): - Aunt Lucy's Paste - Marzano - Italian Tree source for these seeds is out of california. I gardened for many years in Charleston County SC Zone 8...By mid July tomatoes were done for because of the heat and humidity. Commercial growers usually shipped their tomatoes north from late May until early July. That is until most closed shop and sold to real estate developers. Some backyard gardeners start a Fall crop in early August. There have been seasons where I harvested tomatoes until Christmas..... Spend my Summers in the NC mountains where my garden starts later but usually get vegetables into early October.

you should be fine with all of those as long as you water consistantly. it never really gets hot up there and the real problem here in the valley is it never cools off. so the tomatoes stop polinating when the lows are in the 90's.

hellbound thanks for the reply. This will be my first summer here in Prescott. I am not so worried about the heat as it gets a lot warmer in TX, it is the bone dry humidity that has me concerned.

The plants right now are still in the greenhouse and I am not comfortable transplanting yet because it can snow in mid to late April. At least it did last April when I bought the property. Up at Flag and GC last April 17th was a white out blizzard. Really kind of freaked out this ole Texan.

I have tried 70 varieties of tomatoes in the Phoenix area and found that Mountain Fresh from Totally Tomatoes never fails to out perform all of the larger tomato varieties including the "heat resistant" varieties for 10 years in a row.

Mountain Fresh averages between 10-20 lbs per plant of #1's (3-4 inches across.) This is 3-6 times more than all other varieties!
