Very nice. Do you remember what variety of date that was? Since its a male, are you going to plant another seed and wait 10 years hoping for a female? Do you know if anyone has ever been able to fruit dates here in S FL?

How much do you sell your sapodillas for?

Actually, ther are two trees together that you can't see. Both were just sitting in pots and grew into the ground. Its hard to see from the picture. The seeds were actually from fruits grown here in Florida. Just east of my house, almost to Flamingo Rd. there is a development called Arboretum (along SW 8th street). Their entry had date palms that fruited and I took the seed from there. I have also seen fruiting date trees outside of a Publix store located on Andrews Avenue in downtown Fort Lauderdale. So while they do not like our wet, humid days while they are supposed to fruit.....they will fruit.....at least some of them anyway. I know nothing about the cultivar that this is.

Regarding the blooms.....not being very knowledgeable about dates, I am not really sure if these are male blooms or not. Best I can tell they are male.....but I am still watching for something that looks more female.

i work in the Bank of America building on Las Olas blvd in Ft Lauderdale and they have four date palms that fruit but i dont think they are edible, the ones that are edible are Phoenix dactylifera.

I wish I had more to show you. Actually I do have a few more, but fruit set is generally so light, that it isn't worth taking pictures of. On another note, I did forget to take a picture of a Carabao seedling that is flowering for the first time. I think it is about 8 years old. I had previously planted out a Carabao seed from a fruit I bought at one of the Fairchild Festivals in the mid 90's. It did not grow true to seed. In fact, I do not even think there were mulitple sprouts from the seed. I am hoping for much better with this new seedling. It was given to me by a friend as an established 3 foot seedling. Stay tuned.

I also have two Maha Chanook seedlings that are beginning to flower. Both flowered last year and are two of three Maha Chanook seedlings I planted in the same hole. Last year neither held any fruit. So I am anxious to see how these trees turn out this year.

Thanks for the pictures. Those Date tree pictures you posted look like the ones in front of Publix downtown. At this point, I don't even remember what the trees looked like near my house to draw a comparison. In fact, I don't even know if the trees are still there or of they were destroyed in Hurricane Wilma. I'll have to check it out. In any case, if the other tree doesn't bloom female they are both coming out. I did taste the fruit from the trees outside of Publix and although they were not dried, they were not bad. And I am still here to talk about it...so I guess they are not poisonous.

Your fruit orchard looks great. Thank god spring is here in NY and temps are finally warming nicely. My poor mangoes suffered the most this winter but I am sure they will perk up again once they can go outdoors. I am going to start buying better lighting here soon. I wanted to show you a picture of my Improved Meyer lemon tree. It is little above 6ft and 3ft wide. I have hundreds of buds and blossoms and 11 fruit. the fragrance from the flowers is a great pick me up for the winter blues here. My keylime is blooming also but still no fruit set yet. That tree is not very old but this meyer is a monster. I cannot believe that it is thriving in the window it is in. It definetly only gets maybe an hour of direct sun but gets bright indirect light for the rest of the day. How do the fruits taste? I heard someone say that they taste sweet enough to peel and eat. Doesn't really matter to me. It is a beutifull ornamental and I have emailed some members from the citrus forum that grow the meyer up north like me and they say it can bloom 5 times a year. I am going to need to do some pruning on the top to keep the height restricted but I want it to bush out as much as possible. What a beutifull citrus!

Harry- you correctly credited for the lychee blooms but you rather rudely failed to credit me for your kohla longon bloom which bloomed for the first time in 15 years a couple of weeks after I uttered my bloom beracha in your yard. A little rude, but whatever.

Andrew, I am sure you COULD eat a meyer like an orange, but I sure wouldn't want to. They are still quite sour even when they are totally ripe. Not quite as sour as a normal lemon, but still sour enough to make you pucker.

The Meyer Lemon is very edible by itself...if you have just eaten a Miracle Fruit Berry. Its more sour than a sour orange but not as sour as store bought, Eureka type lemon.

Felipe:

Edaw is the leading commercial cultivar in Thailand from what I was told. It isn't the largest, or even the best tasting fruit, but it is very prolific, bears regularly and is a good longan. I prefer See Chompoo or Biew Keow which are both slightly better than Kohala in my humble opinion. Edaw would be just a hair less than Kohala in my book. Tommy Wong is a seedling grown by Tommy Wong....coincidentally. I didn;t know him, but Bill Flynn (an old timer from Southern Dade County (now probably deceased) sold it to me about 15 years ago. It bears regularly and is on the same level, for me, as Edaw.

I have been getting $1 per fruit for Hasya sapodillas (the smaller ones). When I get the really large ones, I have gotten up to $4 per pound.

Mango Seedlings blooming this year:

Carrie seedling, 3 different maha chanook seedlings, two different Carabao seedlings, Thai Everbearing x Cushman (my theory as to what the cross is based upon last years fruiting) and one unknown mango seedling blooming for the first time

While your Haysa sapodilla ending its cycle...mine still have a couple more months before they get to full size. These fruits take so long to mature. But the only fruit on my makok is almost full size. I will have to update pictures of my trees when the weather is nice enough for me to move them out of the house.

Where are your sugar apple or atemoya? I love those fruits.....

Harry, you can probably feed a group of vegetarians year round with all the fruit trees you have in your yard! All your trees look so healthy and lush. Your Edward mango is especially beautiful, I think I have to pick one up for myself. Please keep us updated as the fruit matures!
