Need suggestions on a large fruited Jakfruit variety

I have a Gold nugget, but would like to pick up a larger fruited one as well. I am specifically looking for a firm fleshed type that's size can be managed with aggressive pruning. A good tasting variety would be nice as well. I have a bunch of black gold seedlings, but I believe the flesh is usually soft on those. Anyone here actually tasted any firm fleshed large fruited varieties?

How old is your gold nugget? Fruited yet? As for the other...Lisa is always talking about her Bangkok Lemon Jak. I don't know anything about it though. You might hit her up on it.

The gold nugget is still pretty small. It's probably doubled in size in the last 6 months since I got it but I think I still have a ways to go for fruit. I am moving it from a pot to in ground this weekend so I am hoping it really takes off after that. I'll have to look into the Bankok Lemon.

Here are some of the evergreens I use: One that will tolerate sun AND shade: Heuchera - Coral Bells. There are some very interesting foliage colors, and they flower, too. No fragrance, unfortunately. They are tough, and easy to grow. I love them. For the shady parts, what about some small Rhododendron/Azalea? To add some texture, what about Ophiopogon (Mondo Grass) in the shade, and Festuca glauca (Blue fescue) for the sun. Liriope too, perhaps. Groundcovers? What about some Fragaria chiloensis (Beach Strawberry) mixed with Potentilla neumanniana. I do this, and it looks cool. Need some vertical accents? Lots to choose from, but in the shade you could consider Fatsia japonica, Rhododendron, Aspidistra elatior, Camellia, for example. In the sun, maybe Buddleja (Butterfly Bush, though not always reliably evergreen), Acanthus mollis (Bear's Breach, sink the whole container in the soil; this one can spread), etc. Just some suggestions of different sorts of plants. I'm sure you'll get others. Cheers

IÂm in California zone 9, and share your enthusiasm for very sweet fruit. The Owari Satsuma mandarin starts the citrus season in November with sweet, easy to peel mandarin oranges. Also very good are the Cara Cara navals, Kishu mandarins (small but seedless, easy to peel, and candy sweet) and Gold Nugget mandarins. Prunes and pluots are not necessarily firm fleshed, but can be sweet. Last year was the first year for my pluots, but they were very good and sweet as well: Flavor Supreme, Flavor King, and Flavor Queen. Prune trees are much sweeter than regular plum trees- some people say theyÂre too sweet and bland, but I had some last fall from the store that were very good, and will be giving a few cultivars a try here. IÂve tasted some dried Prune de Agen from France, and they were slightly more flavorful than a dried California Prune de Agen Improved. The new white aprium, "Cot-N-Candy" sounds promising as well. The Spice Zee Nectaplum I tried at a fruit tasting had firm flesh, was very sweet, with a nice touch of spice and some acid. Apple trees that IÂm growing with hopes of the sweetest fruit are Red Fuji, Honeycrisp, and Pink Lady, but they havenÂt produced yet. My Black Persian mulberry has wonderful sweet fruit as well. If you consider vine fruit, the yellow "Sun Sugar" cherry tomato is the sweetest, like tomato candy. Wine grapes are usually sweeter than table grapes, but they have seeds, and are not firm fleshed. I havenÂt tasted any seedless grapes that I would recommend, yet. Seeded Concord is still my favorite. I started a bunch of grape cuttings last year, including wine grapes, may or may not get fruit this year. If you like berries, for regular sized everbearing strawberries, Albion is consistently very sweet and firm, as is Mara des Bois from White Flower Farm, although less firm. Other strawberry varieties IÂve tried are hit and miss, with more misses than hits. In short, any fruit you grow at home and allow to ripen to perfection on your tree or vine is going to be sweeter, more flavorful, than those at the grocery store. Good luck.

Which varieties of Pomegranates would you suggest?

As far as I can tell, the lighter color pomegranates (color of the arils, not color of the peel) are less strongly "pomegranate-flavored." I know the first two you listed have almost white arils; a google search tells me Utah Sweet probably has pink arils. Austin apparently has red to dark red arils. If you want a traditional strong pomegranate flavor like 'Wonderful' that may be your only option (or try a different nursery). [Personal bias: I don't like 'Wonderful' myself. I like light red ones]

Here's a couple shots of stuff that 'anchors' the corners of my (messy) gardens. Pay no attention to the lack of mowing on this particular day: "Red Prince" Weigela: To the right there's an "Alfredo" bush in this shot This one is just various tall 'stuff' like bee balm, milkweed, and phlox...probably not what you're looking for... To the far right in each of these pictures, you'll see a Ninebark (the dark brown shrubby thing)... ...and this one has the Spirea way in the back right corner Another shrub is this Golden Rose of China bush that in this pic was 3 seasons old (planted mere 'sticks' and it's doing fabulous...have a whole row of them 'guarding' our front property line). May be a little big for what you're looking for, though at I believe 6x6 mature size. I don't have a pic of my dwarf lilac...can't remember if it's a Japanese or Korean one, but it's cute & lovely lavender. Currently checking in at only about 3', and not sure how tall it'll eventually be since again, I'm not sure which nationality it is ;) Maybe some of these helped, maybe not, but figured I'd throw them out there for you.

I have to agree about the bangkok lemon. It is definitely the best I have ever had. I also saw a 1 year old seedling bangkok lemon with flowers on it. This past summer I tasted more than 10 different kinds of jackfruit and I thought bangkok lemon was the best.

Murahilin, do you know of any nurseries that carry the Bangkok lemon? It does not look like pine island carries it. Payday is coming and now the Bangkok lemon is in the plans, and a Sapodilla, and a jamaican cherry.

Murahilin...you have to just keep rubbing those 1 yr old seedlings in don't you!!! LOL! I hope your taste test did not include the gold nugget. I'm hoping this is a very tasty fruit. I wouldn't know seeing that my PLANT IS NOT BLOOMING YET!!! C'MON!

I was looking at the Mia 1. I have some Bangkok lemon budwood coming since none of my usual nurseries seem to carry the Bangkok lemon. If none of the grafts take I'll probably end up with a Mia 1 since they seem easier to find and have good reviews as well. I just did my first jakfruit graft about a month ago. I did a veneer graft of a gold nugget onto black gold rootstock. It seems to have taken but I have not removed the grafting tape yet aside from a small patch to allow the bud to grow. I am assuming that since the graft is still green after a month it must a taken. I am hoping I have the same luck with the bankok lemon.

My Jamaican Cherry (Muntingia) is in fruit now- it is easy to grow from seed and it grows/fruit quickly- fruit from seed in 13 months for me! Don't buy a tree- I can send you seeds.

I actually have some Jamaican cherry seeds that I picked up from Montoso a few months back but I have had no luck in getting the to germinate. I thought I read that the seeds did not have to be fresh so I am not really sure what the problem is. I am going to try again now that it is warming up to see if that maybe gets them going.

I've seen most of the bangkok lemon fruit around 25-40lbs and the fruit usually comes in around late summer here in Florida.

I have a Golden Nugget fruiting for the first time and very heavy. I'll probably have to thin the fruit. Does anyone know of a non-summer fruiting Jakfruit variety?

That's impressive. Is that your tree or a pic from Excalibur? I can't wait until mine get a trunk that big. How tall is your tree? I am going to have to constantly top mine to keep them under 8-9ft

I thought I recognized that greenhouse in the background. I had a bad day in that thing.

Yep, I have no choice but to use a greenhouse with them in the winter. They would not make it long up here. This year we had 4 nights that got down to 20 degrees and many more below freezing. I am going to plant the Bangkok lemon right next to my gold nugget and prune heavily to keep them from getting too tangled. Kind of the two in a hole method, with the trunks about 2ft apart. When they get close to the height limit I'll just hack the top off. Might not make them the nicest looking trees, but I figured that since they fruit right fro the trunk I should still be able to get a decent crop from them. I'd be happy with 2-3 fruit a season from each. They will be under a greenhouse from about January 1st through the end of Feb.

If I can stop buying plants at some point I am going to get some cash together for one of those 10 X 12 harbor freight GH, but until then it's just the portable ones.
