4th of July tomato plants update! (Photos included)

Photos have been included to share with you, and also encourage you to post in this thread how yours are doing and maybe include some pictures if you have any.

Here is the status of my early type tomato plants. They are 6 weeks old since planted from seeds. They took a little over 2 weeks to germinate and as you can tell in the pictures they where fairly small at 22 days. At this moment some of the leaves turning light green / yellow, but overall I think they look ok. This might be because some of the leaves are not getting enough light. As you can tell I only have one lighting fixture and i found out the hard way that it is not enough. That is why I added the aluminum foil under and over to reflect as much light as possible. I still got about 5 to 8 weeks before planting them outside. I have no idea how large I should expect them to be 5 weeks for now, but I better be prepared. I have a cold frame greenhouse ready for them outside, i think they should do ok there in the month of april and grow the rest of the tomato plans under the light which i just planted from seeds last weekend and still have not germinated.

Please do not make fun of the way I created the tags. I order some online and i still haven't gotten them so I was afraid to lose track of what is what now that i planted they others tomato seeds. This tags are temporary.

Here is the current status (6 weeks). As you can tell they grew at least 4 times it size in 3 weeks.

What size will they be in 5 weeks? I don't even want to know.

5 more weeks they will be huge and tough to keep under control. These are from last year, just getting ready to get out of control.

Hey Bonnie, The link should take you right to our albums which show four pictures. One is the house gardens , another of the wood fired pizza oven and one of the profile picture..If you click on any of the photos it should open that album up.We have the page open for all to see so it should not be a problem,LOL, this is my first attempt at using it however.Everyone keeps telling me it is a piece of cake to use.I am going to try and put some tutorials on there with pictures as I get some time.I am going to try and do more pictures tonight since everything is changing so quickly now that we have some heat ..If you cannot get them open let me know and we will try something else.. Chris, I would be interested in any tomato seeds that you may have extra of. My hubby and I were just talking about what to put in the veggie garden last night. My family likes canteloupe, watermelon, tomatoes, cumcumbers, and green beans. Would be interested in anything unusual, fun for the kids! But if you've got everything ready for Patty, or have it mailed, please don't worry about me!! I wasn't able to send to everyone either. I really wanted to though!! Actually, the lady pictured in the "Rooster Crow" photo I posted is my SIL, Sharla, not my wife, Elly. But yes, Sharla is constantly crocheting,...mostly projects to be entered into competition at our August county fair. She used to win cash prizes along with her ribbons. Anymore, though, due to professed failing funds, winning competitors receive only ribbons these days. While Elly, obviously, crochets as well, she's nowhere near as prolifically dedicated to the practice as her older sister. Just now, however, Elly is working to complete a poly-chromatic afghan to enter into county fair competition on the occasion of the fair's 100-yr anniversary. While the fair board currently claims it is actually functioning in the black as of late, we'll see what ultimately happens.

Yep! That's why I love the Burpee's tomato called Fourth of July! I've been planting them for many years now and they always give me a ripe tomato by the 4th! I started the seeds in early March and they went in the ground the first of June and I picked that one on the 4th!

Nice pics piantini! This is my first year growing from seed and I simply marvel at the day to day progress of my tomato plants. It's unreal! :)

And timmy1~ I'm gazing longingly at your picture and feel like I did when I was pregnant with the kiddo's.....back then my mantra was "Only a few more weeks.....". :) Very nice!

That's a lot of tomato plants! Do you plant to share with friends and relatives?

I like this variety for our hot summers, even though it is obviously marketed with more northerly climes in mind (commercial tomato harvest peaks in June here - getting a tomato by the 4th of July is not remarkable).

I have been growning 4th of julys for years and I would have to say they are right on track. They are lovely to grow and eat. They are in fact usually the only hybrid I grow. This year I am trying 2 more hybrids for a friend. I just started my seeds yesterday 150 and I thought that was a lot.

Hi Piantini, Nice pics! You are like me, you can't wait to start the seeds and then we have them too early. I still have 5-6 weeks to wait myself, but you'll be alright! My pics below show the different size cups that I use, starting the seeds in the smallest (using Miricle Gro Seed Starting Mix), then transplanting to the 8 oz cup when they get true leaves (now I start using ProMix BX), then, one last transplant to the 16 oz cup when there is about an inch between the dirt line and the first branch. (I cut off the cotyledon before putting it into the 16 oz cup.) I bury the plant deeper, each time I transplant, up to the lowest branch. The stem will root and make the plant stronger! I use mini blinds with Avery #8167 Ink Jet labels covered over with 3/4 inch "invisible" scotch tape from Staples. They last all season for me out in the garden. The second pic is a pic of my 4th of July on the left, a Basil plant in the middle, and a Campari plant on the right. Last year, I had ripe Campari toms on June 30th. The Campari beat out the 4th of July for the first ripe! The 3rd pic is my three shelf growing setup with two 4' floursecent lights for each shelf, and the lights are adjusted with chains. The fourth pic is a tray of my plants that I transplanted today. Their next stop is in the garden outside after I harden them off during the first week of May. Then I enjoy the fruits of all my work for the rest of the summer! Hope you have a great growing experience! If you have questions, ask in this forum. The people are very willing to help you. Paul
