Favorite Mango - survey says!
Comments (61)nighthawk ; Yes, I am very familiar with the tastes of the VP, Glenn and Kent. The Glenn was my very first tree, planted in my yard in Islamorada, Fla in the Upper Keys. I knew nothing back then, - bought and planted it at the strong suggestion of Armando, a Cuban immigrant gardener working at Ray's Nursery in Homestead. Realizing I had a small lot and that it was my 1st tree, and most likely my only tree, he unhesitatingly recommended it. The Cuban's know their mango's, and I've been indebted to him ever since. If I met someone who could only plant one tree, I would strongly recommend a Glenn. It has it all, medium size, early season, scrumptiously delicious fruit with no fiber, and best of all, a fantastic producer. That tree has always out produced any of my other trees. Then, after moving, I planted a Kent and fell in love with the taste. Taste is subjective I realize, but IMHO Kent has the best taste,....just a notch above a Glenn. Then planted a Valencia Pride & was amazed at the size and looks of the late season fruit. Seeing how big the fruits ( and tree ) were, I half expected the flavor to be not so hot. Boy was I wrong ! Surprisingly, it was absolutely delicious, again IMHO. Just a tad less delicious than a Glenn. So there you have it, so far my top tasting three mango's, - am down to only 4 trees now. Besides the Glenn & Kent, I have a Tebow ( new tree, tasted a few, give it an 9.0 out of ten), and a Carrie, ( also a new tree, no fruits so far, jury is still out ). Had a Pickering in ground for 3 yrs, neither me nor most of my " favorite recipients " cared for them much. Not a bad taste but " no me gusta " as we say in Costa Rica ! lol Just curious, where in 9b are you located ?...See MoreMango trees,.. there's always room for one more,...right ?

Comments (138)Had the pleasure of a guest from this forum to my house today. Lycheeluva and I did an extensive walk thru the yard checking for new developments.....especially on the lychee front. It looks like the rest of the mangoes that have not bloomed, are almost all beginning to push their annual buds. Yes, even the miraculous Chou Anon is going to now bloom. There's no point in deliniating any further between the next to bloom. The late varieties such as Keitt, Neelum, Kent and even Valencia Pride haven't begun pushing bloom as of yet, but they will be shortly. I am also awaiting bloom on a couple of mango seedlings that I have never had fruit from. Mangoes survived the freeze very well here and we should have a very heavy crop (barring any more ridiculous Arctic oscillations). As trees set their crops I'll post pictures....See MoreFirst mango pannicles of the 2016 season !!!
Comments (61)The above discussion about when, or when not to spray copper fungicide on a healthy mango tree has intrigued me and caused me to re-study my strategy. After that dismal ordeal 5 years ago when my 10 ft tall Nam Doc Mai got this fungus, - I had no idea what to do. So after 2 yrs of constant fungus, I cut that tree down ( was getting too big for it's location anyway ) and replanted a Pickering. From my investigating then it was apparent that there are differing opinions, some say start in Dec and continue every 2 weeks till harvest, others say only spray once or twice early on. After a brief investigation I opted for 2 sprays early in yr, 2 + weeks apart & never looked back. Until now. Just came across a University of Florida site about the care of mango trees. Very informative, especially about this particular subject. UF says if you are spraying copper fungicide, spray only in the following months. Nov, Dec, Jan and Feb, but only if you feel it's necessary,..and that's it ! That's when the pannicles are new and the blossoms not yet open ! Common sense advise for the backyard grower, just what I was looking for ! Now I am a rabid Florida Gator fan, if they said the sun really rises in the west and sets in the east, I'd believe them ! ( smile ) So I have decided to change my mango spraying habits starting next year. One spray max in late January and none if there's no evidence it's necessary. The site that I found so interesting is : Mango Growing in the Florida Home Landscape My blooms now all look healthy, - many flies, bees & misc guys flitting about, so am confident I did no damage by my 2nd spray. An interesting subject for a mango farmer like me. I must thank Nancy for causing me to rethink this important subject. Hope the above site helps a few more mango "aficianado's. " ( smile )...See Moremullenium
