Best Mango variety
Comments (21)Many varieties are grown(endemic) in India. Worldwide, Alphonso is considered the best in taste(also less fibrous). However,Most Indians like a variety called 'Langda' in western/northern India and 'Malda' in eastern India. There are many sub-strains of this variety called 'safed malda','Kalkatia malda','Lal malda','Bambaia malda' etc. 'Dussery' is another excellent variety (mainly grown in Uttar Pradesh in India. In the state of Bihar, famous varieties are 'Kishanbhog', 'Sipia','Malbhog' etc which are extremely good. All these mangoes differ in flavour, size, colour etc. Alphonso is the one to ripen perhaps the first i.e in April. Malda(almost all of them) ripen in June. A person can try these mangoes in India and then settle upon his/her favourite flavour. Personally, I like 'Safed Malda' the most and many a times foregone regular meals due to overeating this variety....See MoreMango variety question for Los Angeles area.
Comments (8)I guess even in soucal,Mango's are needy care plants for nurseries. I know here in the bay area they never look as good as they did when first brought in. The nurseries usually have a long wait until they flush if foliage is damaged in some way in holding. So,they can look ratty. They are healthy...just waiting until they get coddled at your home. As long as I'm rambling...they also never look as good in a pot as they do in ground. Tough call..in a pot,you can be 100% safe from cold of course, and gophers...but they look so...tree like in ground. In the end, the sweet fruit are worth the effort....See Morewhat are your Top 5 Mango varieties?
Comments (132)this is my Florigon i got the seed from someone in Fla a couple of years ago. its growing very nicely, but is getting large for the container. it will go in ground in the spring. i am putting it close to the house on a south wall, in hopes it will last next winter. i havbe about 8 seedlings, most from Ataulfo/champagne from the store bought fruit, but, also have Neelum and Coconut cream. i will wait till those get larger, but a few of the Ataulfo are in ground, in hopes of a miracle that they survive this winter... if one does, there is a very good chance it will survive the next few winters, unless we get a really hard freeze which does happen every few years. the climate here is a bit strange... i would say out of a 10 year span, we will get 3 years of no freeze, ... another 3 or 4 of just hitting 29 to 32F, one or 2 hitting 27F and maybe one below that at 24 or 25F. i am thinking on those days i can build a box around it with a frost cloth. being near the house helps a lot with the bricks re-radiating heat at night. ... so ... to me, a seedling that can be 3 degrees F more hardy, can mean the world in the chance of getting fruit one day....See MoreAlso, what variety of blueberry is good to plant solely for fall color
