I have a couple of Hannah's Choice. This one was hard to establish, but the one that is doing really well has wonderful peach-flavored berries. I have not tasted Duke fruit, but everything I read says they are bland and mainly grown for being early and productive. For a mid-late variety, Ozarkblue blows everything away that I have grown. It stands up to the heat really well, resists spring frosts, and is extremely productive with great flavor. It has a fairly high chill requirement and is probably worth trying even in zone 5 in areas with hot summers. I also really like Blueray, Legacy and Sierra.

I'll second the Edible Landscaping recommendation. I haven't ordered any of their larger plants, but I was very pleased with the quart-size mulberry and figs that I bought last fall. They shipped quickly, and their packaging was first-rate. Also, where did you buy the smaller plants that have disappointed you? I ask because I've had very good luck with the 2-year-old plants that I purchased from Simmons Plant Farm and Burnt Ridge Nursery last spring. At this point, the more vigorous varieties have reached 3' or so and are loaded with blossoms (from 12" to 15" at the time of planting).

The distinctions become blurred with plants like Legacy. SHB are hybrids themselves. Legacy, and South Moon and others are hardy in the colder zones too, so they are showing more of their NHB genes. I have NHB Liberty, Toro, and Chandler. I can't remember what Chandler looks like in fall? But the former two are awesome for colors, and they are good plants. I like the berries too! I have Car'a Choice, and well I have no idea what it is? These plants have been crossed and recrossed so many times.... CARA'S CHOICE is a progeny from the cross G-144 x US 165. G-144 originated from the cross 11-93 (a sibling of 'Bluecrop') x 'Darrow'. US 165 is a self of US 79, a hybrid of the diploid species Vaccinium darrowii 'Fla 4B' x US 56. US 56 originated from a cross of hexaploid V.constablaei x T-65. T-65 is a rabbiteye hybrid from the cross of 'Walker' x 11-180 (= 'Myers' x 'Black Giant'). The cross that produced CARA'S CHOICE was made by A.D. Draper at Beltsville, Maryland in approximately 1977. (note it was released in 2000). For many of the newer cultivars, the lines between NHB, RE, and SHB are being blurred and made obsolete. Cara's Choice in point: A cross between 1) A cross of NHB (primarly) and NLB that is considered a NHB (Darrow X sibling of Bluecrop), and 2) RE, SLB, and a high-bush like species from N. GA (a different form of SHB than the traditional RE X NHB?). In it's lineage includes V. corymbosum, V. angustfolium, V. darrowii, V. vergatum (ashei), and V. constablaei. The cross was made about 1977, even though not introduced until 2000. Imagine what more complex crosses are in the works since 1977. Except for legacy cultivars, I think the NHB, SHB, and RE are mostly useful for classifying, generally, what zones they can be grown in. The usefulness of the classification is being diminished by hybridization. Fruitnut: I thought I had read somewhere, in relation to peaches, that low-chill varieties grown in high chill areas can escape variable spring weather better than some high-chill varieties. I thought the idea was that it took longer for the low-chill varieties to break bud. Am I misunderstanding that? Would not the same principle (if it even is one) apply to blueberries? In regards to the question of how to get IndigoCrisp, Raven, etc, there would be a legal route, via formation of a partnership with covenants to abide by non-propagation and non-sale. I have contemplated throwing this out there before, but haven't yet decided it's worth my time to draft up a partnership agreement, form the escrow account, and reship purchased plants. It's the last point that would be the most arduous. Lots of irons in the fire already.
