Seedling Soursop care

Hello everyone,

I recieved a few soursop seeds last summer, and now I have a young seedling that is growing vigorously. How long should I wait to repot it? I have it in 4 inch pot. I counted 4 true leaves with another beginning to form. I love this seedling, much nicer looking thene sugar apple seedlings. I don't want it to die and I don't know if it will resent having roots disturbed or not. Can someone help me? I also am hoping to find a maybe 4-5 more seeds just in case it doesn't make it. I also would like to know what kind of light to give it outdoors this summer, and what are the minimum nightime temps for it.

are there leaves on it?

mine is still a skeleton, no new growth. my other anonas and malay apple are flushing though.

Yes, I have 4 true leaves on it and it is continuing to still grow. I guess it likes its spot because the tip has always had leaves developing. I have had more luck with good leaf growth on this then I have had with my sugar apple seedlings. It seems like the soursop is easier to keep green and healthy then my sugar apple seedlings. The sugar apple are still growing but I have lower leaf damage from inconsistent watering. The soursop dries out just as fast but it doesn't get brown leaf spots. After reading the article that Tammy sent me, I want to do everything I can to keep this young tree happy and growing vigorously. I can't wait for the fruit. I just hope it doesn't take 13 years like it did for the russian who grew from seed. I think part of the reason it took so long was because he didn't know as much about it. I am glad I have experts here to guide me!

That's great, zone 8 sounds pretty nice! Right now, everything I have is indoors, under lights and in a heated room. :-) Last frost date will be less than two months away. It's way to early to put anything that's actively growing outside around here. Highs only getting into the 50's with mid 30's popping up a day or two in a row. Things don't really grow much in that kind of weather even if no frost at night (it didn't freeze the last couple of nights) and last year when I put new seedlings outside during the day, they went dormant and it took a while to get them going again. So yes you get to know how to judge your particular climate, just thought I'd mention that so the op would consider their area. :-) Even though I'm zone 3, near z4 border, I've learned that z5 isn't all that far ahead of us, maybe a couple of weeks earlier that we are. The main difference is the depth of cold during a somewhat longer winter. Once it gets to this time of year it's not a big of a difference really. :-)

We are wondering what types of tropical fruits everyone is growing, and where (H. zone) are you located. Here we have 1 guanabana, 300 oranges, 3 grapefruits, 3 tangerines, 3 papaya, and 1 guava trees without any problem so we would like to see what other fruits trees would grow here. If your trees are producing fruits then we would like to get some seeds or seedlings.

I live in California and would like to grow my own Soursop tree. I can't find a single place where they would sell it and I know it's a very good fruit. Can anyone give me directions on how and where to start with growing my own tree? Please. I live in Palmdale. Hot in the summer very cold in the winter. A lot of wind. If you can even tell me of a place where they sell this fruit, I would appreciate that information as well. Thank you all ahead of time. Bless you all.

My tomato and hot pepper seedlings are ready to transplant. Need to finish harvesting the lettuce and prep that remaining bed. Hope to get that done tomorrow then put the rest of the plants curbside free for the taking.

I started my sugar apple seedlings about 2 months behind when you stared yours last year. My seedling has the same symptom that you mentioned. Lower leaves start to develop brown leaf spots and then totally dried out. They had not grown a bit during the winter months. Hope someone will know what the cause this. I will post a photo of the seedlings tomorrow so we can do a comparison with yours. You mention about Tammy's article. Is it a care bible for these babies? Will you please share this article? very munch appreciated.

Soursops are pretty tough little guys. I always have seedlings around. I forget to water them, they get limp, I water, they perk up. They get knocked around by the cat, fall out of their pots, I pick them up , shove them back in and they have no problems. They are pretty plants (with shiny green leaves),fast growing and they don't loose all their leaves during the "winter" like the sugar apples and atemoyas. I think you should be able to repot them without any issues. My oldest seedling grown tree made a small fruit after only 3 years (but it mummified). Hopefully this year I will get some fruit from it.

JLGARDEN- I assume your sugar apples will releaf soon. It is a natural process for these plants to go bald in winter.

I have two soursops grown from seed, put one in the ground, and kept one in a pot. Waiting to see if they break dormancy, or if they got too much cold during the winter. They have sure grown fast, if not too beat up perhaps they'll fruit this year. I love a good soursop. Tartest taste I ever enjoyed.
