I've done and seen avocados and mangos multiple grafted. I have done and seen mango trees planted in mulitple, usually 2 or 3 in one hole. I have never seen guavas done either way, but I don't see why you couldn't plant more than one in one hole. I currently have only one mutiple grafted mango growing. It is Mallindi on a tree that is mostly Philippine. Malindi was interesting to me because of it very red color but I didn't want to take up more space with it planted separately. There is some thought that depending on what you graft onto what, there can be some effects on the different parts of the tree causing season changing to some extent. In other words, an early mango grafted with a later season mango could cause the later season mango to bear earlier or the earlier one later (but usually the former). I think Richard Campbell of Fairchild Gardens has said that the more than one in a hole method was better than multiple grafting. However, I have a freind who has one tree in his backyard. It's about 15 years old and has large sections of it that are Edward, Carrie,and Valencia Pride. He has had other cultivars also grafted on this tree, but they have been shaded out by the "big 3." He gets very nice crops of all three every year. I have had an avocado tree with a seedling rootstock making up the main part of the tree that I top worked after Hurricane Andrew. I grafted on Pollock, Lula, Loretta and Russell. The tree is now dead for other reasons, but it produced very nicely, all four types for quite a few years.

I have a couple lychees in the same hole. They seem to be doing great so far. I don't see why you would have problems with any of the types you listed as long as you keep them pruned correctly.

thats interesting about the rootstock changing the blooming season, never thought about that.

you said you have a "Martinez" mango that you believe is a Rosigold seedling. if you are right then it seems to be blooming at the exact same cycle as my Rosigold grafted onto a turpentine (mid season i believe).

does your Mallika seedling and grafted Mallika bloom around the same time? probably not as good of a comparison because i believe Turpentine is mid season as well.
it would be interesting to compare.

I believe there is a mango tree in India with like an unbelievable number of varieties grafted onto it. A staggering number actually.

you must mean the Miracle Mango tree in Utter Pradesh. it has over 300 varieties many of which are unknown and thought to be otherwise extinct.

HAJI KALIMULLAH Khan recently won a Padma Sri for growing more than 300 varieties of mangoes of different shapes, sizes and hues on one tree. This rare technique of his has made him popular as Âmango man in Malihabad.

Listening to Khan talk about the variety of mangoes grown by him in his orchads, the expression and delight on his face puts across as if he is fiondly referring to his family members.

KhanÂs prized tree is about 100 years old, on which he started work in 1987 to develop the craft of growing different varieties on one tree. He named these mangoes as namesakes on his family members who were also mango growers.

After 50 years of incessant efforts, Khan has lately developed five new varieties of mangoes.

He is, however, excited about a Âmost delicate and Âgraceful looking latest variety, which he has named as ÂAishwarya as it reminds him of Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai.

"It were the children in the family who on seeing the new variety remarked that it resembles the actress in its colour and grace," Khan said.

Among his most precious creations is a tree in the Mughal Garden at the Rashtrapati Bhawan flowering 54 varieties. The tree is 10 feet tall with six-foot-long root and was dug not with axe or spade but by water currents and transported from the orchid to Delhi in five quintiles of mud in 1999 as a present to the then President, said Khan.

The craft developed by him has become a mystery for researchers and agriculturists from the country and abroad who have been left baffled by his work.

The sexagenarian who also finds mention in Limca Book of records for growing the rare tree has the support of his sons in keeping the tradition alive.

Among his regular visitors is the Uttar Pradesh governor, T V Rajeswar who had in 2006 named three of his varieties as Nayantara, Nargis and Jahanara, his son Nazimullah Khan said.

Khan has also cultivated a new variety of all season flowering guava, which on ripening grows as red as apple.

*i would REALLY love to have or try an Aiswarya mango, i named my dog after her too, lol. Bombay (Pirie) and Alphonso both come from Uttar Pradesh which is the exact longitude of South Florida, they have drier seasons however

Sorry, I missed your questions in this thread, until tonight. I didn't say that a rootstock would change the blooming season of a grafted variety. The conflict between different cultivars on the same root stock seems to occur, in my experience, when there are two or more blooming cultivars on a single root stock. I have seen the earlier blooming cultivar cause the later blooming one to bloom early and even sometimes not at all. This is purely anecdotal and not based on any proveable facts. But I think I have heard Richard Campbell discuss this somewhere along the line also. The root stock, whether Turpentine or not, if not allowed to flower has not, again in my experience, created any noticeable change in season. I suppose it could...but I haven't experienced it. Of course, we wouldn't really know for sure unless we could do some side by side studies with different cultivars grafted onto different root stocks to see what caused exactly what to bloom differently than the others.

My Mallika seedling is blooming now as is my grafted Mallika. The grafted Mallika was just slightly ahead of the seedling. I have a Carrie seedling that was in bloom way before my grafted Carrie. I have Maha Chanook seedlings that are atill not in bloom even though my grafted ones are blooming for quite a while. So, I just don't know what conclusions can be drawn from all of this. There are too many uncontrolled variables to make any real judgments

I've multi planted guavas, 3-seedling tropic pinks in one hole and 6 (3varieties) in another hole. So far they have fruited and grown nicely, it has only been a few years though.

Harry, have you had fruit from the seedling Carrie? If so, how different is it from the parent? They do not come true from seed, correct?
I am asking because I planted a seedling last summer from a seed that was very kindly planted by a friendly neighborhood squirrel after he devoured my ripe mangoes (No, I am not bitter,lol). Just a little experiment to see what I will get once it fruits in 7 or 8 years.

its almost the same concept i noticed when older trees, especially those with wind damage and have newer and older growth, they can have two different season flushes.

Yes, I have had fruit on the Carrie Seedling. The good news is that the seedling produces a much larger fruit than Carrie does. It has many of the characteristics of Carrie, but perhaps a little bit less twang......that resinous taste that some people love and some people don't love. The problem with it is that is hasn't produced more than a few fruit so far in any of the three years it has fruited. This year it is loaded with blooms and I am hopeful to have a decent crop. Time will tell.

Yes, seedlings will be different from the parent in potentially many ways. Just like in any sexual reproduction, the child isn't the mother, nor is it the father......it is a new individual. Random genetic mutation allows for the adaptation of a species to its environment. Mangoes, like other plants, will have variations and sesitivities genetically to cold, heat, drought, salt, bacterial, viral or fungal agents, insects, etc. Flavor, taste, fiber content are probably not the main concerns of mango gentics as relates to the survival of the species. Maybe it should be though as good tasting, fiberless mangos are probably more likely to have their seed planted by man than are other less desireable (to man) varieties.

I have a bunch of seedlings I have grown or am growing. There has been mixed results so far. I am still waiting on Maha Chanook seedlings to bear. I have two Carabao (supposedly poly-embryonic) seedlings. One has never even bloomed and the other has born fruit that has absolutely no resemblance in size, shape or flavor as the seed parent, Carabao. This tree was blown over in Hurricane Wilma and I couldn't get it upright and figured I would take the chain saw to it. It got a reprieve, but if it doesn't do something dramatic this year, it is history.
