Bird of Paradise .. .HELP
Comments (10)megajas, plants like the banana, plantain, bird of paradise etc. which bear a small number of large leaves seem to have 'evolved' to tear the single, large leaf into a larger number of small leaves, or better still, leaflets like a palm frond. This 'evolved' characteristic seems to have been in response to high winds which might cause the whole, large leaf to break away and drastically reduce the total leaf area of the plant and endanger the survival of the species. The brown edging along the tears is a healing reaction. That is the story that has been told to me and I am sticking by it....See MoreBird of paradise culture
Comments (12)This bird of paradise grows in full sun. It's about 8 foot across and 5 feet high in this picture. 2 years ago we had to dig up and divide the plant. A dadburn schefflera was growing in the center and we could not get it out. We gave a dozen plants to neighbors and potted up a couple for our selves - just in case we killed the poor thing. I'm happy to report that all are doing well. We put one plant under some palm trees. It gets more shade than direct sun. While the plants in full sun have all bloomed, the one in the shade has not. It is growing well and is nice and full, but hasn't bloomed. I don't know if that is a factor to consider or not....See MoreGiant bird of paradise babies
Comments (5)I would recommend you slowly acclimate them to whatever sun exposure they will have. Putting them in full sun when they're not acclimated to it will cause the leaves to burn. New foliage will do fine in full sun, but if you want to avoid burning the existing foliage you'll have to do it gradually. Start off with a couple of hours of sun either during the morning hours or afternoon hours and gradually work your way to putting them out in full sun all day....See MoreBaby giant bird of paradise Strelitzia Nicholai
Comments (2)It might be an idea to "introduce" them to the sun gradually - now that the sting in the sun is getting a little weaker they should cope ok with some early morning sun before the full blast of mid day sun. They will put on a great show in the future for you - good luck....See MoreHeathen1
