Vanilla Bean Vine does anyone know about it?
Comments (2)The plant is Vanilla planifolia, which is an orchid, not a bean. It is native to rainforest areas of Mexico, which will give you an idea of its cultural requirements. It is tropical, not subtropical, so growing it outdoors successfully will depend on where in Florida you live. It is an epiphyte, meaning it grows on trees, not in soil. I suggest you tie it in close contact to a tree with fishing line. Don't bother with soil. Spray it with water daily unless there is rain. Don't worry if you miss watering sometimes. Spray it occasionally with a soluble plant food diluted to half strength. Eventually, it should start to grow and send out roots which will cling tightly to the tree. During the cool part of winter, if it gets cool, don't water. If there is a cold spell, cover it with a blanket. It may not bloom for a couple of years or more while getting established. The vanilla "beans" are the seed pods which follow the flowers. Jim...See MoreGuidance for vanilla bean cuttings?
Comments (2)I've grown Vanilla Planifolia cuttings without rooting hormone. I just allowed the cuttings to dry for about 10 days and potted them in a very well draining mix. This was done during the summer in a greenhouse so it was quite warm and humid....See MoreStoring Vanilla Beans........

Comments (10)Besides making your own vanilla extract and vanilla sugar, what do you use the beans for? Homemade Kahlua 4 cups sugar 2 cups water 2/3 cup instant coffee 3 1/2 cups vodka or rum 1 vanilla bean Combine sugar, water and coffee in a saucepan and bring to a rolling boil. Skim off the froth and allow to cool. Pour into a half-gallon glass jug, add the vodka or rum and the vanilla bean. Store in a dark place for at least 2 weeks, preferably longer. Remove the vanilla bean and store in glass containers. I've found the longer it's stored, the smoother it gets. In the beginning it's almost too sweet (at least for me). It's quite lovely over vanilla ice cream....See Morebluespiritartist
