Can someone ID this mango

I found this mango tree around the hood. I though the fruits looked like an apples until I notice the leaves. The tree is about 15'-18'. The fruit weight around a pound and the same color as granny apple???

I've never have seen a mango that looks like that. I'd be most interested in hearing a report on their eating quality.

Could be quack grass or goose grass as well. Whatever it is, I just spray it with Acclaim from Lesco. Sometimes it takes two applications though. I started seeing this exact thing popping up when it was too early for crabgrass. The only thing with Acclaim is it's about $80 for a 16oz bottle. But, at least for me and how much I'd have to spray, I only use .50oz per gallon, and usually only use one gallon twice per season at the most. So that 16oz bottle will last me for quite a long time theoretically. Long enough to average out and have it be worth the cost.

nam doc mai is a definite 5 star mango in my opinion. excellent fragrant citrusy sweet indo-chinese flavor. the perfect mango on the Indian side of the flavor spectrum that is small and fruits well is Carrie. Rich creamy outstanding complex mango flavor. i remember in season i bought a big box of mixed mango varieties. i was eating so many different types of mango varieties that looked and tasted like Haden i couldnt even really distinguish them but i knew right away whenever i bit into a Carrie. this season you can sample and compare the fruit for yourself. they both are small trees but can be pruned to dwarf size. my biggest concern would be the taproot outgrowing the container and becoming spiraled, i never heard of anyone root pruning a mango taproot but im sure its possible, mangos are hardy and spring tends to work its magic on them if they are in shock. what size containers do you think you are going to end up with it in ch3rri? i think it would ultimately be happy in 25 gallons. it would take a well draining soil to make that light enough to drag around.

There are are only a couple common varieties I can make an 'educated' guess on based either by leaf shape or tree form; even then its impossible to know without genetic testing, and I'm not sure where you could have that done or what the cost would be. Once it fruits you get a much better idea though, based on the numerous characteristics of the fruit (shape, size, color, flesh color and incidence of fiber, and production habits such ripening period, does it fruit in clusters, disease resistance, etc). While there are literally hundreds of varieties that have been grown in or introduced to Florida, in my experience it is more likely that if yours is a grafted tree and not a seedling, it can be narrowed down to one of the more common varieties. A huge percentage of older established mango trees in Florida are Haden, Tommy Atkins, or Kent for example, and an overwhelming percentage is probably accounted for by 10-15 varieties or so, including the above 3. Lots of possibilities though, so when it fruits take pics of the tree and fruit and people can take turns trying to identify it :) As far as the first question, in my experience trees can be surprisingly close to eachother and still produce well.....Harry has better knowledge on the spacing issue though.

I guess it's possible. The nance has a glossy leaf - a bit like an avocado leaf. Wife cut her teeth climbing those trees, but it's possible that the specimen in the picture has a more sickly look due to different climatic conditions. There's a giant nance tree at the fruit and spice park by the bananas. The fruit are delicious - very unique flavor. You can buy them frozen at the ethnic/hispanic markets. For a while zill's was propagating them. There are some really neat nance variations from Central America including one with fruit the size of a quarter and another that has no astringency. There are also nance fruit of different colors (green and dark purple if I remember correctly). Unfortunately it really hasn't caught on as a dooryard fruit here. Jeff

I would imaging they are very close but I'll keep eye for the next two weeks. We are getting good weather down here so if they are at full size they will ripen soon.

go for it! what's your opinion? they might be thai or taiwanese varieties but that's just a guess.

Joe, this is the tree I'm comparing to.

This is one of the trees my in-laws have on their property in VN. Size & shape-wise, it closely resembles your neighbor's. Though there could be many others looking just like it. What I also remember was their mangoes did not blush with sun exposure just like the ones in your pictures.

Anyhow, the mangos in pictures are known as Xoai(mango) Coc(ambarella) in Vietnam though I can't confirm if it's an actual cultivar or general name given to small, super crunchy, semi-sweet, green eating mangoes.

Hi Tim

They are close. These are not my neighbor's tree. They are growing a mile from my house in a friend of mines neighborhood. I will monitor their progress in the next two weeks and try one. As you know, we are in the low 90's here in La Habra so they will be ripening real soon.

Nice try, looks similar, but I don't think that is it. Difficult to tell for sure from the pictures.....discrepancy could be due to different stages of maturity. Hopefully, JF will keep us updated with pictures as these fruits mature and we can make some further comparison.

I knocked on these peoples door to inquire about the mango tree but no one was home. The mangos are ripening up fast, as I predicted, with the heatwave we are having. They are getting light canary yellow.

Wow, the weather down there has been incredible..those Mango's remind me of Mango's in June.
UP here in norte cal..we have had mid 60's, a couple of 70's and sun..and THAT feels soucal in January to me.

People must think you were weird when you were taking pictures of their mango tree. I'm sure they recognize you and they don't want to open their door to you now, no offense :). Keep trying, don't give up I want you to keep us posted on this story or mission LOL.

Breaking news,

A serial killer was found nearby, more precisely in La Habra's. We found him next to one of his victims house taking pictures and spying them. His favorite victims are unknown mangoes! He likes to eat his victims ,but sometimes he prefer to rob or kidnap them, so be careful and call right away the police!LOL
