Went to the website and unfortunately the Brandywine they tested was a Potato leaf and assuming it was Red as is Peron they did not have the true Brandywine Red as it is RL (regular leaf). Ami

IN addition to Ami's comment I feel that the worth of any grow out and/or taste testing is completely dependent on the varieties included and the seed sources as well. And I don't think that the 10 varieties in that study offer enough competition to make any real conclusions.

The correct name for Peron is Peron Sprayless, which it isn't, and it was introduced by Gleckler Seedmen in 1951.
Gleckler's was one of the only seed sources for interesting varieties when I first started growing non-traditional tomatoes in the early 80's and they date back to the 40's and the granson of the original owner has now revived the company and they have many interesting and hard to get OP heirlooms/varieties.

Peron Sprayless was bred in South America in the 40's I believe and I don't think most folks look at it as a wonderful tasting variety, based on the listings in the SSE YEarbooks.

Just my opinion and yes, I have the seeds, but it isn't high on my list to grow in comparison with many other varieties on my list.

None of the varieties tested above a six on their taste scale, so I have to think that none of them were at their best, and I have noticed after looking at various taste test results that preferences differ between the general public (in this case growers and customers) and tomato aficianados. The former tend to rate "normal" tasting tomatoes above complex tomatoes.

I didn't realize Rutgers had such small fruit (3.4 oz). Is that correct?

Man we all taste things so differently. Must be lots of variation regarding human tastebuds. I grew Peron Sprayless one year and thought they should change the name to Peron TASTELESS! I am an organic gardener so I'm always looking for varieties that have a better chance of resisting diseases but I won't sacrifice taste...

I have seen it time and again, where judging of anything is highly subjective. Often personal opinion and popular opinion weigh heavily. Living near Amish country, I have grown Brandywine tomatoes and several other varieties. My favorite depends on my desires that day. A big slice of Pineapple on a burger, the tangy taste of Green Zebra, or the super sweet Sun Sugar all have their place on the table.

And I just followed Ami without ever looking specifically at that above paragraph as well. LOL

I just concentrated on the chart. Sigh.

Carolyn, and yes, taste is personal, subjective and actually is related to the taste genes that individual persons have, so a human genetic factor as well.

Along the same subjective taste theme, an extension researcher presented results of a single year trial in 11 heirloom varieties at the Mid-Atlantic Vegetable Conference in Hershey and they included 5 hybrid varieties in for comparison. Interestingly the 5 hybrids were all in the top eight for flavor. It could be that the public perception is changing.

It could be that the public perception is changing but I don't believe that at all.

I think that study isn't worth much scrutiny b'c of the varieties that WERE chosen, aside from the sujectiveness of taste and all its variables.

And If when I talked to a couple of folks associated with two places where both OP and hybrid seed is sold, I didn't get the impression that hybrids were outselling OP's.

And yes, I do grow hybrids from time to time. Last Year Randy Gardner who bred the MT series sent me his three latest hybrids as a thank you for my sending him about 30 heirloom varieties that he wants to incorporate into his breeding programs. And he said that many hybridizers were now working with heirlooms to get some taste into the hybrids. And I think I mentioned above that David Francis at OSU is doing the same.

Of the three he sent one is already out there, the other two were supposed to be available this year but aren't b'c of seed production failure in the Netherlands, and one of those I thought had outstanding performance and taste, the other one was excellent as well, and I didn't care for the third based on taste alone.

Actually the correct name for 'Peron' or 'Peron Sprayless' is 'J. Peron'. It was released by Professor Abelardo Piovano of the National University of the Argentine in 1948.

It has "Perfection" and "Marvilla Del Mercado" in it's background.

Is that Perfection related to Yellow Perfection? I know in my garden Yellow Perfection is my most reliable tomato.

'Yellow Perfection' supposedly came from England.

I like Yellow Perfection but the horrible season we had last year nothing tasted great was lucky just to get tomatoes at all. I even tried "Carolyn Pink" for the first time last year and it was unimpressive I was so discouraged (sorry Carolyn) :(

But this year.....THIS YEAR is going to be GREAT!

I suppose the rest of the data on yield etc. is accurate, so at least that part of the survey is useful.
