Growing Mango in a pot

Hello, all you fruit officianados! After the fruit id post, I decided you guys are the best!!

I was wondering if y'all could tell me how long it would take for a mango seedling to set fruit. Mine is over 3 1/2 yrs old and is about 5 feet tall. It has always been wintered indoors and spends the summer outside. It is healthy and growing well.

And while we're at it, what about growing papaya in a container?

Not sure, could be very quick, could be years & years. I had a mango that bloom in a container in 3 years, grown from a seed. Another member here had a tiny 12in seedling blooming. I think these are more of the excemptions though, most will probably take much longer.

Mull, good luck with your pots...our Wmart didn't have the 24" pots or maybe they've already SOLD out by the time I went to look? Not an expert but I think your 36 holes should be fine for drainage...I wouldn't think you need to drill any more. Hi Marin, I have a "few" marble size mangoes set on the tree...but I'm losing several here and there and I'm not sure why? We've been SO hot lately...maybe I'm not watering enough...plus we had that storm hit last week and I lost quite a few of the fruits from the wind as well. I still have about 8-10 weeks to go and I really hope I don't lose them all? I haven't decided if I'm going to pot the Glenn on the Smart pot or the Black Nursery pot in summer...what I'm afraid of with the smartpot is its NOT very sturdy and I'm afraid what will happen when I have to lug it in and out of the garage in the winter...I might end up using the Nursery pot instead? Nullzero, you should post some pictures of those pots from the Car wash...I'm sure we would like to see them, thanks!

Best Mangoes For Pots

Last year I started experimenting/trying to grow mangoes in pots in my zone. So far I have Manila, Julie, Young (aka Tebow), Graham, Glenn, Valencia Pride, Lancetilla, Pickering, Carrie and Southern Blush. They're all still alive and so far Manila seem to show the best growth but its also my first tree, so it may simply have a head start compared to my other trees. From my current observations for the zone I'm in, vigorous mango trees seem to grow as slow as a dwarf variety. This is because the evenings here are rather cool. My newbie recommendation would be to choose the mango variety you personally like (and possibly eaten) and go with that. I will also suggest looking through the forums here on soilless potting mediums and other forum user's experiences with pruning. The bonsai group also has good information. Good luck.

Since I've seen you posted about this twice? And didn't get any answer I will give my best shot as i'm no plant expert and just a newbie. Yes it looks like it is grafted. Looks like some kind of side grafting method, maybe a poorly veneer graft because usually the end tip of the scion are not suppose to be sticking out and should match perfectly with the root stock. You won't be able to tell variety till it fruits and taste it and see if you can find similar tasting mango varieties locally available in your area that has similar taste as your fruits. Even than you still wouldn't be 100% of the variety but at least you get an idea of what you have. They can be grown in pots but you will need big pots in the 30 gallon size and bigger when it matures. Start in smaller pots then gradually move to bigger ones. If you plan to keep it there permanently, you will need to keep it prune to remain a manageable size. And you have to feed it very good fertilizer for it to fruit in pot. But it looks like you are not in the USA(?), if you live on some kind of island or area that has tropical climate it's best to plant in ground for best permanence. Plus you don't know what variety you have so it could grow huge and be to big for pots. Hope it helps a bit.

These are the Manila mango fruits from June of 2006,and just starting to going through it's first flushes after the winter of 06. These might be the worst photos I took!..but with thousands of images..These are the ones I memorized where and in what file. The others if I run across are of flowering,pea sized fruit and ripe cut open fruit of a 9',then 5 year old potted tree. Potted up by me after a few years in an extra SANDY soil like it came in. I curse the winter of 2007. btw, A second Manila was thriving and growing fast in a pot...did well for a short time in ground,went through a winter fine...then in late spring of 08..died Just shriveled up. Could have been root virus or Gophers.

We planted our papaya out in the yard in the spring. Was too big to keep inside any longer. It bloomed and fruited but a little too late. The fall freezes came and nailed the tree. Keeping it in a container will probably take a few years to fruit...if you have room to keep it inside!

I have read many places that Mango's will fruit in 3-6 years so, like eggo said , maybe real soon , or 3 more years

Well my MANGO must be the one for the 6 yrs period. The one in the ground has not bloomed, neither the one that is potted, they are both grown from seed. Now my guava, SHE BLOOMED AND FRUITED IN ONE YEAR! then the frost got to her, but now is coming back! i ALSO HAVE A ZAPOTE but he is just growing, my bananas they grow then the frost got to them, now they are coming back, but this plants I got from a friend and all of her bananas give fruit except the ones she gave me, so I asked her what does she do to the plants she has, in order to get them to bloom and set fruit and she said nothing! they just put out on their own, so what gives?

Ohiojay, I'm surprised your papaya bloomed and actually set on fruit! How many years had you had it in a pot indoors? Marcie_new, just curious.... what makes your guava a "she" and your zapote a "he"?
