Tulip bulb madness

I got a great deal on tulip bulbs at Lowe's a few weeks ago (75% off). I've been planting them in all my concrete pots and loose flowerbeds for some early spring color. I was amazed at how much better my mood was after only a couple of sessions of being outdoors (though I did have to bundle up)I probably have 100 or so bulbs total to get in the ground but I made a big dent in it anyway. I usually don't bother with tulips but they were so cheap I thought I could treat them as annuals and cut bouquets for that price. They were very healthy looking bulbs...none trying to sprout or look dried out. I'll post pics in the spring. Also I've had good luck rooting some hydrangea cuttings in the plastic box method we learned at the fall swap. I'm just doing my best to stay busy during the winter. What's everyone else up to?

Sounds like a great deal on your tulip bulbs. I love the flowers, but treat them as annuals so I can yank the ugly foliage once the blooms are gone. I have several dozen bulbs in the fridge that I'll try to get into pots tomorrow. I also like to use glads in the same way. Today I painted the trunks of about 30 fruit trees in preparation for the wire cages that are about to be placed. Yesterday, did a detailed garden plan for 2010 so as to be able to order seeds intelligently. That was fun. Am building hills for watermelons, and otherwise getting beds ready for spring. Misterbaby.

Hi Jenn!

Ugh, I still have to get my tulips in. I missed my window with the really pretty weekend whenever that was, and now I guess I'm going to be stuck doing it in the freezing cold and rain. :) I didn't buy too many this year, just 30 or so for a small area near the front porch. You got a great deal on yours!

Other than that, I'm trying wintersowing for the first time this year. I've been hanging out on the seed exchange, swapping seeds. Never thought I'd try seeds! But I keep hearing how wonderful it is and once you try it you'll be hooked, so why not? I am hoping to get at least one plant of everything I sow...and who knows, if I have more success than that I may be showing up at the spring swap with a lot of cool stuff!

My rose cuttings are still doing OK. I started with six inside and I'm down to four. Still debating on opening the bags or not. I also have some rose cuttings outside under plastic, and so far haven't lost one of those! So, I'm thinking I am going to have a better success rate with that method.

I have ordered bulbs from VE, Scheepers and Bluestone. The first two have excellent quality and delivery times and you pay for what you get. They run out early. When I got my first Colorblends catalogue a couple of years ago I was critical of it. It looked like so much marketing to me. It seemed to me they were doing the work that garderners usually do: combining different varieties and selling them as "package" for impact. That's still true, but I still ordered some individual items, not combos. These were the biggest damn bulbs I've ever seen. Beautiful and healthy. And they arrived in 2 days....from the date of ordering. They are not more expensive than Scheepers and VE. They don't have the variety, but if they have what you want I suggest you give them a try.

It would actually be the ground temperature at the depth of the bulb. https://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature The current soil temperature in San Francisco is 54 degrees (at the surface layer, down to about 10cm). The five day average is 54.4°. Looking back, it's been a warm year by a couple of degrees on average, but temperatures have been in the sub-55 degree range since before December first. It seems a bit marginal, but...if we apply the rules exactly as written, it says the bulbs have had at least nine weeks so far at appropriate temperatures, so there's certainly every reason to hope. As long as they didn't rot. Next year, I might be inclined to refrigerate (not freeze) the bulbs before planting, and plant late enough in November that they won't sprout until your "spring" arrives (to me, your spring is December, so...) If rotting is a problem, just keep them dry, refrigerate for ten weeks, then plant them in spring and let them bloom at that point. Then discard and buy new the next year.

I doubt they were too small, maybe they were old, and now many bulbs appear to have been mislabeled. Maybe they had supplier issues with the covid year.
