What do gardeners want Santa to bring you?

Gardeners are a different breed when it comes to our Christmas wish list don't you think? I'll start with a statue of the famous Bird Girl statue I found at a garden center yesterday (if you have no idea what I'm talking about do a google search), a pair of polka dot boots for those times I want to tromp in the garden in wet wintertime, lots of gardening dvds and books to pass the time, some flannel lined jeans when it's really too cold to be outside but I'm stubborn anyway...what about y'all?

A pair of gloves that never ever will wear out! I know it doesn't exist but I know I went through 6-7 pairs this year. Too many big projects! Stone just tears them apart.

Dear Santa, I know I'm not the most realistic woman in the world but I would love to have some rock picking proof jewelry or the major money to repair the rings I have tore up and a couple of heated greenhouses. Merry Christmas! lol

Amserelda: I'd like some hens and chicks, please, to add to my collection. I'm not picky -- anything will do! Serpent Moon and I appreciate the Crown of Thorns cuttings -- she has already requested it for us. Would you like a cutting of Euphorbia trigona? Skybird: We already have some sedums from you, from the fall swap. I'm not sure what Serpent Moon has requested, but I'm fine with you giving some of them to others who request them. ---------- The tomatoes I planted a few weeks ago are still sprouting. I take back whatever I said about the potentially low germination of the Costoluto Fiorentino tomato seeds. Even though I saved the seeds over a decade ago, they are still in good shape. I have 3-4 seedlings per pot, of the 3-4 seeds planted per pot. If you are careful, you might be able to separate out the seedlings and pot them up separately. I don't think any have their first set of true leaves yet. If anyone wants seeds for them, please let me know and I'll package up some for you. Ditto for the seeds from the cherry tomatoes I grew last year from Plant Swap plants -- Black Cherry, Sun Cherry, and Riesentraub. All seem to be germinating well this spring. Costoluto Fiorentino looks a lot like Costoluto Genovese, for those who are wondering. It's a medium to large sized tomato with lots of ribs, rather like an accordion. They're a booger to peel if you're making sauce. The flavor is quite reasonable, and they grew well in my Oregon garden (coolish dry summers, fairly short season). The original seed came from Sementi, a gift from a friend who had visited Italy. I'll go through the thread this evening to write down names of people who've requested specific things. I'll make coleus and geranium cuttings tomorrow, plus maybe a few Euphorbia trigona cuttings in case anyone wants a thorny but vigorous succulent as a houseplant. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone!

Looks like I'll be able to make it after all :) Here's what I'm bringing (I will follow others suit and not do dibs): Pulmonaria - also called cowslip, Bethlehem Sage, lungwort. It's a semi-shade perennial, very hardy, low growing (when flowering, maybe reaches 12" max). Has red-pink flower buds , opening up to reddish - violet and then turning blue as they age (may be Dark Vadar). Flowers close at night and open again in the morning. Blooms in spring. Keep it moist, but otherwise low maintenance. Divide it every few years. Large Hosta: may be Giant Hosta, not sure. But the leaves are large (about 9" long x 7" wide), and it gets about 2' tall. Gets flower spikes with white blooms, smells very nice! Blooms in early/mid-summer, at least for me. A shade to semi-shade perennial. Keep it moist, but otherwise low maintenance. Divide it every few years. A couple of baby Russian Sage: you see this plant all over the place in Colorado, but in case you aren't familiar with it: xeric perennial, has airy spires of small, purple-blue flowers and finely-cut, gray-green foliage on upright, grayish-white stems, I think people either love, or hate, this plant - I'm a lover! I'm noticing that it can start taking over a bit - it puts up new growth from the roots, but also apparently from the seeds as these two shoots were growing away from the main plant. It gets from 3-5 ft tall, and about as wide. Cut it back after blooming, or let it go for winter interest (but cut back in spring when new growth emerges to get rid of the dead stalks. But some re-growth does come off of the older stems). I personally love the scent of the flowers and stems - a sagey-mint fragrance. But I have heard others that say it's too overpowering. Pale Purple Iris: Not sure if this is the same color that Mayberry is bringing or not. Do you have a pic, Mayberry? Sorry my pic is not very good - my hard drive crashed awhile back, and it ruined some of my saved pics :( This is one I had posted on Picassa, and I zoomed in on the iris (so it's a little out of focus), but I think you get the idea! $3,495?? What does it have in common with a front-loading washer? I'd have a heart attack! Says he .. who recently saw his asset shrink by over 25% without getting bent out of shape - was rather surprised at how little emotional turmoil that it generated. Aware, I guess ... that I can't take it with me. Its main job is to give me a comfortable retirement. And leave something for my "kids". And something for charity. Jenn, I could go for everything on your list!

I just opened my gift from a friend in Atlanta. We used to work together, and still exhange gifts. She is the best gift-giver ever! She sent me three of those ergonomic handle hand tools. I have been drooling over these since I saw them at Martin's. How she knew, I'll never know! She is apparently psychic. Does this every time. It's amazing.

I want a new body. I'm only 45 but the 20 years I raced motorcycles has taken a toll on my body. All of the wrecks, broken bones, torn cartilage, torn ligaments and many surguries makes me wish I had picked a different sport. I should have taken up gardening at an earlier age.

I wish Santa could steady the gyroscope in my head, it has a bad wobble. My feet don't go where I want them to.

I would like to add "new body" to my list too. I've been winter sowing the past few days, which basically just involves putting small amounts of soil in pots and sprinkling seeds in them. Not really a big deal. But you would think I had been digging ditches for three weeks. I had to get in the jacuzzi tonight.

Too bad I didn't get interested in gardening when I was like, oh, 20 or so. Man, I could have really put that energy to good use!

I'll have to agree with jim6b & connie somewhat...lol. I'll just take some new hips (not the whole body). My surgery I was going to have this month will no longer work. If this Fosamax i'm on now doesn't postpone the hip replacement I now have to have, I may not be making it to the Spring swap. :-\

I have been absent for months, but that's because I had to have a bone marrow transplant. I won't be able to garden this year as I can't have my hands in dirt or breathe dust (too much risk of infection), so I'm going to enjoy reading about all your planting exploits. The up side to this is that my donor is 22 years old. It's been my contention that I will be 22 again when I get completely well. :-) That's a far cry from 55, so I know I will be able to garden with much more ease next year. LOL.

Your conclusion that you will be 22 again when you are well makes sense to me.:) In the meantime you can browse for cachepots and vases in the antique stores around (I live 50 mi N of Huntsville) I have such a collection I need to grow some more plants to fill them.
