Hello. Does anyone know what BOP will stay small and bloom?

I was looking on E-bay and it seems they have plenty to offer.

I am just not sure of which one is worth the time and investment.

Will these bloom for us up north? Is there one that stays on the smaller side that is destined to bloom within a reasonably short amount of time?

Is there a place one can buy one that for certain will bloom for a resaonable price?

Fast growing Clematis in my zone 5 garden have been mainly viticellas. These are group 3 (refers to pruning type in clem-speak) clems and can be cut down to the ground in early spring, since they bloom on new growth. Most of them are not the large flowered ones offered so often in our local nurseries. IMO the smaller flowered ones often fit in the best in perennial gardens. Here are some group 3s that have grown very quickly for me: Betty Corning - (viticella) pale blue-lavender bell shaped blooms. This one blooms almost continuously for me. 12 foot Madame Julia Corevon - (viticella) wine red flowers, great rebloomer, not quite as tall as BC 6-8 ft Etoile Violette - (viticella) deep blue purple flowers, heavy bloomer, great with pale pinks 8-12 ft starts later that the first two then blooms for about 6 weeks for me. Polish Spirit - (usu. listed as viticella) deep purple with hint of red, very vigorous grower, in zone 5 would probably not outgrow an arbor, but might need mid-summer trimming. I use mine along a fence, up the gutter and wall, and across Endless Summer Hydrangea planted in the corner formed by the fence and house wall. Duchess of Albany - a texensis (despite the name it is very hardy here) - pink with red bar, quite a nice saturated color in my full sun conditions, flowers are small upright and tulip shaped, great grower & blooms for at least a month, also some rebloom August/Sept. Blue Angel (Blekitny Aniol) (viticella) - pale blue fading to white in center 4 inch flowers, large flowered for a vit, with a fairly heavy substance. 10-12 foot - planted next to the Duchess for a smashing combo. Sweet Autumn (sometimes listed as paniculata) extremely vigorous grower, masses of half inch creamy white flowers in fall (Sept-Oct) 20 foot - can definitely make a wall if you have a structure for it. I grow 2 of them to make a 40 plus foot privacy fence in an area too small for shrubs (along a concrete walkway and patio area).

dwarf white, choked out the canna, dwarf pink, took over the entire bed, I will never get rid of them and I pull them all the time. They grow in the cracks, in the gutters-how did the seeds get up there??, in pots, in the street, in the alley, found one growing out of a bromeliad, I have found them in the pond plants, sprouting in the chicken coop, they are all just as invasive and horrible. If you want tall pink, dwarf pink, dwarf white, tall purple let me know, you can come dig up however many thousands you want. The dwarfs may not spread by rhizomes but they make bigger and bigger clumps that are impossible to remove all of, so they grow back, then they spit seeds everywhere, I've been hit by seeds from plants 4' or more away from me. AAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH! I hate this plant, spent Wednesday pulling it out of the alstromeria bed and trying to get it out of a clump of bamboo.

I bought the white one from Home Depot. Do you agreed it's not, "The Fairy" originally labeled? It also grows like Wedding Dress... very leggy but the blooms are the tiniest I've ever seen. Maybe only 1". Not sure where I bought the others. If I had to guess, Home Depot. It was before I knew I could buy roses online. Not knowing the names of these roses have been driving me crazy for the past few years. Happy to have found this forum.

Here as promised are some pics of my ducks and chickens. Papa Duck aka " Big Boy" This is Mama Duck aka "Meep" ( that's the sound she makes) Here are the two babies that are left about 8 weeks old . Clipped everyone's wings yesterday Here are the Grand old Boy .....he is the father of most of my chicks and a couple of ladies he is escorting around the property. These are some of my chicks .....about 11 weeks old ( all hatched in an incubator ) but I was not particulary successful . I put in about 40 eggs each time and got 2 chicks each time , a total of 3 batches of 40 eggs for 6 chicks ..... and here are 5 of the 10 chicks hatched by hens . Not sure why I am getting so many white ones with a blue father and mostly blue hens but that is what I got this season . Nancy you would be hard pressed to eat one of these chickens . They are bantams and have so little meat on them it isn't funny. I have them more for entertainment purposes really . We do eat the eggs but I love their feathered legs and feet and the papa Rooster is hilarious when he runs . Looks like Charlie Chaplain running away from you . All he is missing is the walking stick. LOL ! .

Bird of Paradise (BOP) is not a large plant. Most will stay less than a meter (three feet) high and not spread.

Hi Mike,

The larger BOP is the white, which grow to be trees here in Florida. You want the orange,Strelitzia reginae. Just happens to be my favorite flower. Here they're readily available at Home Depot and everywhere else, but I'm guessing you're in southern VT,NH,maybe Maine?

I lived in northern NH for several years. While I was there I was getting ready to put up a greenhouse as there were too many things, including BOP, that I wanted to grow that wouldn't do well up there.

Even here the BOP blooms only half the year, May - Sept. or Oct. depending on conditions that year. they love the stifling hot, humid summers here and further south. They need this to bloom. So to get one blooming there you'll have to work a little. Maybe indoors with a grow light and a humidity tray of sorts. Or maybe outdoors in the summer only. Just be prepared to bring it inside. I had to dig mine up just before Christmas as we had a cold snap. They say the BOP is tolerant to about freezing but that doesn't mean they like it or will respond well afterward. I bring mine in whenever they say we're going to have a night in the low 40s or less.

As far as buying one that will certainly bloom - that's tough. Even w/good stock the conditions have to be right. Here Home Depot sells them w/their blessed 1 year guarantee but I'm sure in zone 5 you'd be hard pressed to find one at H.D Where did you plan to cultivate the BOP, indoors or out?

Hi Mike, I have a BOP/Strelitzia reginae which is around 3ft high now and it has flowered for several years here in the less than paradise-like UK. It's potted and lives in the g/h for the most part, venturing out during the so called English summer...whenever we get one of those. The g/h is heated to frost free temp and we are in the middle of blizzard conditions at the moment...brrrrrr. 2 of it's 3 growth points flowered this time, it having multiplied steadily during the past 10yrs or so from its original 1 tuft of 6inch high yellowing leaves. It was actually on the 'dead and dying trolley' in a large DIY store and cost almost nothing! They need to get to a certain size to bloom, mine was around the 3ft size and had probably 10 leaves when it first flowered.
Mike...Just make sure you don't get the Str. nicolai as you will have to move house with one of those 10m+ giants! Have seen them in Sydney Bot Gdns and they are HUGE! Str.juncea is also a manageble size, is more frost resistant than reginae but not as easily found probably.

Hi there Mike, here's something that may help you decide whether you have a leaf or flower pod emerging....the new leaves appear adjacent to the previous leaf and you can clearly see the thick edge of the leaf margin almost spiralling round on itself. However, the flower spike grows from in between two older leaves and is more pointed, it has a thinner/straighter edge to it, where it splits open. Trust this makes sense...I know what I mean, but it's difficult to describe so below is a pic of my first flower spike.

Hi Mike,

This is my BOP. I grew it from seed about 15 yrs ago. I got my first bloom after 7 years and now it blooms every Christmas. It goes out in the summer and comes back in when it gets to about 5 degrees C. Its about 4 feet tall and I have not changed the pot in about 3 years now. I don't remember fertilizing it all summer. It stays on the dry side in the winter. They are very slow growers. I also have the white one which I bought at home depot. That one has not flowered for me yet. It is a much bigger plant.
