I have an idea what do you guys think???

I have access to lots of bubble wrap where I work both the big bubble & little bubble types. I use it for lots of things, but while packing something to ship today a thought occurred to me.

Could this be used to help insulate plants? I was thinking, put some sort of support ( big cylinder of some sort ) over the plant, then wrap in layers of the bubble wrap. for the support, maybe a big can with the ends cut out.

What do y'all think? Expand on this idea.....

Yup.. I've heard of people using it on tropicals like bananas. I've never tried it myself. I think the big risk would be rot due to lack of air circulation. Perhaps wrap in burlap or something else first to provide an air layer, then bubble wrap?

It should work as long as you allow for air circulation like Ione said. I did an experiment one time when I still had access to little thermometers that could be buried in soil then read out on the computer. I used two of the same size containers with the same volume of soil in each. The only difference was one was wrapped in bubble wrap and the other was not. The wrapped one did turn out to hold the heat longer than the uninsulated one. Sometimes small differences lead to big results.

Actually, I was thinking about trying to insulate some very large containers in which I'm growing Colocasias. I don't have room for the containers inside the house, and I no longer have use of the garage for over-winter-plant-storing. DH has just finished sheetrocking it and has taken it over. :-(

Glad to hear you guys like it too, sometimes I think my tastes are crazy. I will find out about the return policy. I know it is on sale so not sure if that affects returns. It might be a bit girly for DH but he doesn't really mind with that kind of stuff and I will be using it too. I saw a picture where a round upholstered ottoman "lived" part way tucked under the traditional coffee table so you could pull it out when you need it I will have to see if this one would slide under mine....I kind of doubt it. I could also maybe have it off to the side as an extra seat and then just pull it up when we want to use it as a foot stool.

I think it's good to keep your expectations low so that: A) this girl doesn't feel like she is *wrong* or *bad* for wanting to be with her maternal side of the family B) you don't get your feelings hurt, either That all said----my mom and grandparents, particularly my grandmother, have completely enveloped my SS in love and welcoming. So much so that recently, when my grandfather received an award at a university, the program for the ceremony listed his three great-grandchildren. EXCEPT, wait for it, my grandfather only has TWO biological great-grandchildren. BUT they included my SS--with his name and age---as one of the great-grandchildren. Same thing for their anniversary party last year---they referenced, in toasts, their great-grandson _____. My grandma is fan-freakng-tastic. Well, she is just a great grandma all around but she treats my SS as her own! Really, truly does, from birthdays to presents to 'I love yous* and hugs. It is so sweet. My mom is great about it, too. Really wonderful. As a result, my SS feels like a total part of the family---because he IS. He comes on vacations with my side of the family and even last year came with ME without his father. His mom wanted him to stay home with her but he stood up and just said, "Mom, it's going to be fun, I really want to go!" He recently (bless his heart) told my hubby that he worries about my grandma dying because her hands are wrinkly and she's so old. :( He just loves her. So---I think, as Silver said, there can NEVER be too many people loving a child. If your family wants to send your SD gifts or be involved in her life, I think they should as much as possible. Nothing bad can come from that. IMO.

I have cancelled THREE finalization appointments with the cabinet maker. I HAVE to make a decision. What the heck is wrong that I can't make a decision? I don't want to make a mistake. When I look at kitchens, googling all different combinations, this is what I feel.... The white island with wood top makes my heart leap. The Alder island with white top makes my heart leap. No wood on wood, no white on white, no wood with anything other than white, and no white with anything other than wood. (for the island) So, how do you decide? I LOVE the white perimeter, wood island contrast. But, I Don't love giving up the wood top on the island. It makes me sick to my stomach just thinking of giving up on it. Now, for a bit of information that might make a difference in your suggestions, I just bought the antique table with three chairs that will sit on the end of the island. It is 3'x3', and it is oak. This has been in the plan all along, a small table at the end of the island for the grandkids or me and DH when just the two of us. The large dining table is caddy-corner from the kitchen and it will be a 10' farmhouse table with walnut top. Should I just say "that is enough wood" and call it good? And, no wood top on island? (sick feeling) The "side" kitchen is planned white cabinets which houses fridge/freezer, oven, and microwave. Would it look like I bought some craigslist cabinets and threw them in there if I have those made alder? It's clearly visible to the main area of the kitchen. I think I need a therapist.

Sueb, it looks great! I love that it has some height to it for mixing drinks or serving platters. Initially I liked the first painting even though it was dark, bc I liked how it had green and the wall was green and then the bottom half of the wall was red with the cabinet and rug. But the second print looks so much better bc of how bright it makes it look. The first was definitely a dark hole. There is some extra room on the sides of the print but I kind of like it. Maybe see what kind of items will sit on the cabinet before adding more art. In case you have a tall something. You did great!

Hi Virginia,
I grow several varites of Colocasias. I have left the Red Stem ones in a raised bed for a couple of years and they come back. I always pour a load of mulched leaves on them every fall. I dug up my babies this fall and potted them up in the unheated GH so I'm hoping to have some to trade in the Spring. I've got "Black Magic" and the "Red stems" and am going to get the burgandy and green leaf one soon. I also put a pot of "Frydek" in the GH that I will get to divide next year. I'm going to take atleast one of each and put them in one of my beds and mulch heavy to see what will happen to them. I really don't like having to take them in.

I did learn something a few years ago with non-hardy amaryllis. I planted a few around a big old oak and several in one of my garden beds. The ones around the oak still come up and bloom each year. The ones in the bed, froze into a big glob of mush. So, the soil definetly stays warmer when there is a structer or tree close to the plant you want to plant. I had no idea it could make that much difference. My neighbor has one of the huge red and white Amaryllis that she planted 4 years ago in the corner where her house meets the sidewalk and this thing is huge!It had about 20 big blooms this year. I'm going to try to convience her she needs to divide it! This plant came from the florist and it is not supposed to be hardy. We've had many nights in the teens and that thing just keeps on growing in her mini tropical area close to her house. I guess all the concrete and brick act like heaters in the winter.

S0, even if it's not supposed to live, if you pick the right, protected spot and add your bubble wrap, you should have some nice plants next year.

OH yes, do not completely cover the plants with this like every0ne said. It will act like a stem bath on bright sunny days and you will have soup!
