Comments (17)To those in the Dallas area, try North Haven nursery; I believe they have a website. They are the only retail nursery that I know of in that area, that sells unusual and rare plants, including herbs and begonias (not the bedding kind). Also, Heronswood Nursery carries it mail order. I doubt they would mail it this late in the year, but there is always next spring. I purchased my variegated petasites from them. It was a small plant, but very good root system. It is now in it's 4th summer, and is really finally taking off. The problem with mail order, is that they are small plants and it will take some time for them to condition them to our climate, and to establish a large root system. I am in zone 7a in Oklahoma City. I sometimes think the zones are not a very good indication of what we can grow. For instance, Seattle, Washington, may be a zone 7 also, but they don't get the hot summers that we get, nor the unpredictable winters we get. So, just because they're in the same zone, doesn't mean I will get the same results with the same plant. Susan...See MoreWANTED: Ripe flower stalk of Gunnera manicata Green Elephant
Comments (3)Jim, the seedlings you gave me last fall died (I split them and gave half to a gardening friend and hers died also). Perhaps I lost mine as I was distracted by knee surgery last January. If/when you have another Gunnera starter, I would still love a plant. Maybe I could pick up the one Balraj has for the swap and bring it to you... Comments (7)Rainydaywoman, There's got to be a gunnera closer to me than Eugene, and thanks for the offer. If you want to try some yourself, Gunneras do well sown in the fall. I just fill a flat with dirt. Then I take a butcher knife and slice all the finger-nubbies off the seed stalk, letting them fall on top of the flat. Do not cover. Let the whole thing sit all winter. All the pulp rots away and the seeds fall to the surface. They germinate in the spring. (Never let them dry out.) The seedlings are very tiny, and slow growing. But in 3 years a few will make pretty nice plants....See MoreHakuna Matata baby Gunnera Manicatas!
Comments (4)Follow up Sept 07. Gunnera seedlings from 06 did not fare well through the winter. I think I got too eager in March. I had 15 in pots and exposed them too early and all but one died. But spring '07's seedlings, winter sown in fall of '06, mulched and left outside down to 13 degrees F., germinated very well. Here's 50 6-inch pots of seedlings. I'd really like to try this with Gunnera tinctoria. Anyone got a seed head? I will give away gunneras to anyone at the Green Elephant. Also, I divided my Cyperus papyrus 'isocladus' dwarf papyrus and have 15 one-gallon pots to give/share at the Green Elephant. This plant needs to come in for the winter and does well in the house near a window or under lights. Email or give me a call.
