Ti Plant question

Hello peeps! I live in Santa Monica, CA - zone 10b - and I'm redoing my rooftop deck. I'd like to put some Ti plants in containers (the red variety "Maria" or "Red Sister"). Anyone has experience or good advice for keeping these plants looking nice? They'd be getting a half day of sun (8am-3pm).

I think I have red sister, and I just got some more this weekend. They are very nice and easy plants to grow, mine like miracle gro and also water. They seem to love humidity also, but just misting the leaves every once and a while will make up for that. They are pretty fast growers too, (mine grow about a foot or so of new trunk), but if it ever gets too big, just cut the stalk back and root the cutting. They dont seem to shed there dead leaves as easily as other common tropicals and although it will eventually drop dead or damaged leaves, you might want to cut them off so it looks cleaner.

And make sure you buy or plant them in groups. Most stores sell them as 3 or 4 plants in a pot, but if you get single plants, make sure you group them together to give them a full look.

I have a few stuck in with other plants and they all seem to enjoy my benign neglect method, though I do tend to water on the heavy side. We have a fair amount of humidity, though, so tropicalzone7 is probably right about the misting.

It's good that you recognize your desert conditions will be a challenge for the Cordyline. But if you want to give them a shot... 1) Morning sun and beneath the semi-shady canopy and protection of taller plants/trees 2) Sandy soil dries out quickly, so I would probably do some organic amending; no peat unless you are sure you can keep the area moist 3) Under protection, maybe, although they may defoliate 4) Regular moisture without being soggy, and it's okay for them to get slightly on the dry side between waterings, but never bone-dry I have experience growing them in coastal San Diego and east (wet) Hawaii, but no desert experience.

I think I killed the crown of my windmill-it rotted as I had it in too much shade/water. I poured peroxide into the crown and moved it to a sunnier/drier spot (yes, I have heard of copper fungicide, but prefer organic gardening). The bigger leaves are staying on and still look green and healthy. Hopefully it comes back. I think I learned pretty quick that my main tropical garden has too much shade for palms-oh well, I guess I'll have a nice indoor garden for the winter again for my ponytail, sago, chinese fan. Obviously if I rotted the windmill these guys won't overwinter outside. I am proud to say that I now have added to the tropical garden: bamboo, cleopatra cannas split leaf philo.-selluom oleander purple potato bush red-hot poker giant dahlias four o' clocks more hostas (whirlwind, gold standard, janet, some gold/geen lakeside) caladium asiatic lilies calla purple oxalis wandering jew trailing verbena I don't exactly have a plan, but I am leaving most plants in their pots around for now to shuffle them around and decide, etc. If anyone has a brugmansia to trade, I would be thrilled-email or post me.

That's up to you but there is no real reason to remove them if the plants are growing well sine they were transplanted. Most don't recommend transplanting plants with fruit on them. If there are some they remove them. But some do leave them on with no problems. On the other hand "the plants don't look well" can mean many things and it may have nothing to do with the fruit on them. Can you post a picture or at least provide more detailed description? The name of the variety and the size of the plant would help too. It takes an average of 6 weeks for fruit to ripen so one month is too soon to expect ripening. So basically removing them is your choice if you feel it might help. The worst that can happen is you'll have to wait even longer for ripe fruit. Dave

Well, 'feeling' the springs is subjective. I just went out to my showroom and did a pair of Hancock and Moore Sofas, a Leathercraft, a Bradington-Young, and a Southwood....tested them all to see if I can feel the springs. I cannot feel a spring coil on any one of them, however if I push on the deck alone, I can tell there is something under there, its not completely butter-smooth. But there is a lot of padding on each one, so its pretty well insulated. Springs should NOT make noise. That's an absolute. Since your are having trouble with the springs, cushions and its new, I'd see about returning it ASAP and pick out something else from the store. Duane Collie The Keeping Room
