Hampton Court and Private English Garden Tour June/July '04

If anyone is interested in seeing some wonderful private gardens as well as National Trust Properties in Southeast England, there is a garden tour happening this summer sponsored by The British Connection, Inc. and led by former Hortus (renown Pasadena, CA nursery) owner Gary Jones. The tour is from 28 June to 6 July, begins and ends in London, and includes the Opening Gala to the Hampton Court Flower Show, as well as a visit with Penelope Hobhouse.

There are still spots available(I would sure like to find a roommate so I don't get stuck with paying a single supplement!). For more information contact Annabella Fitch-Hutton at Britcon777@aol.com.

Oh my gosh! I've been back a week and the tour is still a pleasant green blur in my memory! Here's a list of the gardens we saw during the 8-day tour (all in the SW of England; National Trust properties marked by NT):

West Green House, Hampshire (NT)
Hinton Ampner, Hampshire (NT)
The Manor House at Upton Grey, Hampshire
Mottisfont Abbey Gardens, Hampshire (NT)
Heale Garden, Wiltshire
The Courts, Wiltshire (NT)
Iford Manor, Wiltshire (!)
Hadspen Garden, Somerset
Lytes Cary, Somerset (NT)
The Coach House (Penelope Hobhouse's house), Dorset
Mapperton, Dorset
Forde Abbey, Somerset
Montacute House, Somerset (NT, !)
Tintinhull, Somerset (NT; P. Hobhouse was once a tenant)
Bury Court, Hampshire
RHS Garden Wisley, Surrey

After the tour, some friends and I drove to the Cotswolds to see Kiftsgate Court and Hidcote Manor (NT). Kiftsgate is probably my favorite garden of all (so far), and a must see detour for anyone venturing toward Oxford or Stratford-Upon-Avon. The Kiftsgate Rose (reported to be the largest rose in the UK and which appears poised to take over the country) was blooming like mad! Also highly recommended is dinner at Marshmallows in Moreton-on-Marsh.

For the private gardens, Upton Grey was a treat as we were shown round by the owner, Ross Wallinger, who almost singlehandedly restored the original Gertrude Jekyll garden. We also had a personally guided tour by the young head gardener at Heale Garden, and the owner of Bury Court (designed by Piet Oudolf) happily gave us the history of his house and garden.

Penelope Hobhouse was just returned from a few weeks in the US and kept apologizing for the state of her back garden (storms had swept through while she was gone). If only I had a garden that looked half as nice as hers, storm or no! She chatted with us then turned us loose to look around (we were the only ones there), while she continued to tidy up the garden in preparation for a village fete the next day. Her influence was obvious at Tintinhull, as well.

Montacute is a must for any fan of the movie Sense and Sensibility, as it doubled as the Palmer's residence, where Marianne was taken ill. Several scenes were filmed in the house and on the grounds, which are absolutely delightful.

Not a fan of that style anyway and it did seem like you could pack more into the space. I assumed it would fill in as the season progressed? I'm envious, too! I would strongly urge you to get a map of the London Underground as well for the London area. I was there 10 years ago and there wasn't much we couldn't get to that we wanted to see (including Kew) that wasn't too far from the Tube. (Oh, that we had something like that in L.A.!) And no, it wasn't creepy like you might expect a subway. Of course your mileage may vary, but if you plan ahead, you can take advantage of discounting by buying several days or however it works, I don't remember anymore. London city may be the worst of driving by car so you won't miss anything except angina ;-) We also found the Tube to run often enough for convenience. Whatever you do, Mind the Gap!!!! 'Nother thought in London if you have time, there are walking tours here and there, most meet near a Tube station. Most tour guides have some sort of schedule. We took the evening Jack the Ripper tour by a guy that wrote a book on him, as he was the most recommended. Your taste may vary! But there are all kinds of these for what was reasonable pricing. A good time filler per one's interest and time offered. You might also do the London bus tour early on to get an over view of the city and decide what you'd like to see. If you have time for anything not garden related (!?!), the most wonderful time we had was at the Tower of London / White Tower where King Henry killed many of his wives, and little princes were bricked up in the masonry and so on. As I recall, there are also replicas of the crown jewels, the armory (fascinating!), the tower ravens, and many, many more things. I cannot begin to say what a good time it was and we both wished that we had planned a FULL day to take it all in, imho, if you see nothing else touristy in London, this is a MUST see. The Beefeaters were MOST excellent tour guides. If you're lucky, you might also find one of your relative's names carved in stone before they were executed! Alas, poor cousin Henry T!!! My cousin wanted to go to the pottery district, dunno about pricing with the dollar now, but we both got stuff for ourselves and Christmas presents. We went to Wedgewood only due to time (took the train, I think from Manchester, I'm not sure) but worth a stop for you if it is on your way to somewhere else just for the tour of how they make the china. There are many other companies like Spode in the area so something to check ahead to see if it fits in (if you do buy, we had our pieces shipped home). Nowadays with these shops more common over here and online, I dunno that it's worth to stop to buy except for the memory, but again, the tour was a great memory of something we don't have over here. I am soon to be 63 and find that I am stimulated creatively by visiting other gardens. Wilmington, NC has a very large spring garden tour (over 52 years old now) and when I moved to Wilmington after retiring from gov't service in DC, I started my first garden. The tours here and elsewhere all have served to inspire things I did in my own garden. I was so desparate to get back into those spring gardens here but in the fall (actually late summer here in Wilmington, NC) that I started the Art in the Gardens Fall tour (just so I could get back into other gardens), oh, and also to benefit our local Arboretum. Anyway, we are in our third year now and over 4,000 people come to our spring tour each year and we are working on getting over 3,000 to the fall tour. My garden was on the spring tour this year and will be on the fall tour. I never saw a garden I couldn't learn something from. Help - Chelsea Flower Show in '04 OR Various Garden Tour

Actually you could do both, although the roses at Kew weren't fully out. Went to Chelsea for the first time. It was unbelievable! We spent 6 hours there and never felt rushed or jostled. Had a wonderful lunch and a Pims! The veggie displays are so unique. Overhead walkways give a great view. We joined the RHS so we could go on Members only day. Worth the $60 fee as you also get a year's subscription to the RHS magazine. A big plus on Chelsea, No childen under 5 which means NO baby buggies!! A highlight was meeting Alan Titchmarsh and Charlie Dimmock of Ground Force. Even had a photo with them! Chelsea is a huge event, almost like the Super Bowl here. Every night there would be an hour long day's highlights on TV. Having been to England before, we planned our own trip. We were there for 10 days, long enough to do whatever we wanted. Less expensive and most leisurely than a tour and you have some awesome resturants in the Kensington area where we stayed, overlooking Kensington Palace. Took the tube, bus and train everywhere with a travel pass, another great bargain. Get the one that allows use before 9:30am. Kensington is a great central location and only one unpacking!! Went to other gardens, Sissinghurst, Kew etc using discount admission on our RHS membership. We went to Hampton Court, a beautiful town in Richmond. Next time I'd like to go to that flower show which is in July, so that might be a better time for you. Have fun, I'm sure you will!

So glad that you enjoyed your trip. For anyone wanting to visit the lovely gardens of Kent and Sussex - including Sissinghurst and Great Dixter, Sissinghurst Garden Tours are launching a very special tour starting on 13 September 2004. I am sure it will be a super event - its a pity I will be back in Australia before it happens. Well maybe next year!
