New Member with some questions about shallow west facing beds

I have a very shallow (6 inches maybe) bed that is located next to our sidewalk on the northwest side of our house. I have had alot of issues with things dying here. When we bought our home three years ago this bed was full of asiatic lillies which bloom one time a year, die and then the bed looks terrible the rest of the year. I am really trying to blend some stuff in there that will bloom or at least look nice year round. I have tried a hydrangea (too hot I am assuming) and bulbs (wouldn't sprout).

Cannas will grow in this bed,and the lillies and now glads will grow under the shade of the canna leaves. Other than that I am kind of clueless, unfortunately most of this stuff is summer blooming so in the fall all of it will retreat leaving me with a big, open dirt bed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer something that will come back year after year, however at this point I will take anything.
