Missouri Surprise

In 2008 we had a long discussion about recreating an old hybrid named Missouri Surprise developed by a Dr. Lambeth at the University of Missouri. It was supposed to be a cross between Mozark and Sioux.

Has anyone made any progress in recreating such a cross, and if so what were the results and is seed available?

In 2008 I was able to get seed from Dr. Trinklein at U of M

for Mozark, and was able to obtain Sioux, Glamor, And Avalanche seed from several other Garden Webbers.

I have quite a lot of both Mozark and Glamor seed.

Item MOX3115 is a Mozark x Sioux cross. Also available
is Big Cheef, Dixiewine which comes from the Brandywine/NAR cross Bill made a few years ago. Dixiewine
was actually NARX, the regular leaf red (Brannar was a
potato leaf red grown by Ami). Anyway, check out Marianna's updated website for the cross you're interested

Thanks very much for the info! I have ordered the Mozark x Sioux and the Dixiewine.

The photos posted on the M x S look exactly as I remember Missouri Surprise. The last time I grew it was in 1977,
we moved here to western PA then and all my garden seeds were lost in the move (or ripped off as several other things
were).

I remember that quite by accident I had developed a cross between Big Boy and Sweet 100 cherry that was stable, threw fronds of 2" dia reds one after another, and was a very healthy reliable plant. Those seeds were gone with the rest, all lost in the move

Thanks for posting that. Glad and surprised to see P. Strobiformis on the 'easy' list. Should work well here (central Texas) then. My 'loma linda' is one of my better looking plants right now. But I only got it last fall. Not surprised to see the pinyons in the 'not so easy' list. P. remota grows in the SW portion of the TX hill country / edwards plateau but not in the wetter portions of the hill country which aren't wet at all. My guess is they would definitely get too much moisture in Missouri. If ponderosa pines are successful that makes me wonder if they would work here too. The conifer encyclopedia mentions they grow well in New Zealand. Isn't that a hot/ humid summer climate? I need to look at my geography books.

Who went to the plant sale? I got there a little after 7 and had a lot of people ahead of me in line. There were still tons of plants to look through. I'm not sure it would help to get there earlier unless I could block the entrance after I got in until I had a chance to read all the plant tags. lol I got a geranium Johnson's Blue, monarda 'Rasberry Wine' and a haworthia pearl plant. I need to read up on that last one. I assume it's a houseplant. I'll post a pic below from the web that looks similar. I wonder if it would be happier outside in the summer. Violet - I guess it's a good thing that all the woodland phlox was gone when I got to the shade section. I came home and started cleaning out my old pre-icestorm shade bed and found quite a bit of woodland phlox growing down in the weeds. It just wasn't blooming there because it was being choked out. I dug up several little starts. It was hard to get the roots but I think they'll do ok if I pot them up for awhile. Question Violet - When the Master Gardener's have their meetings to pot up plants before the sale, what do they use for potting soil? Is there a way to get that stuff in bulk or do they just use compost? Here is a link that might be useful:

Bill, As a hobbyist, you are doing fine and there is no constraint as to whatever you might attempt. My one concern, and it is a niggling one, lay with any future offering of Avlanche for sale, say by Mr. Fausett. In that case, I would prefer, and indeed would only be comfortable, if the plants had been vegetatively propagated from true-to-name mother plants [for many of the reasons stated earlier]. As a nursery business, overwintering, space, insect/viral infection and similar issues would not be a concern for him. What i want to stress, without inadvertently being discourteous or tactless, that in a commercial situation, one cannot make a cross from a pedigree and name the outcome to be the same as Avalanche. And, especially, sell that progeny as Avalanche. One could sell it as "the same cross that produced Avalanche" [truth in advertising]. Had the two parents been maintained as highly inbred lines, assisted by tester lines, then, certainly, every cross of that pedigree would be a modern F1 hybrid. Not quite so for two OP parents. The reason I go to such nitpicking detail is that I have worked on the physiology of flowering, parthenocarpy, the earliness gene, membranes etc. for tomato since 1984. For the past several years, i have crossed and recrossed several large-fruited and cerasiformae, observing interesting linkage and drag effects that are quite unwanted with the trait of interest but exceedingly difficult to get rid of by conventional methods. I am not a plant breeder by a long shot, but have a lifetime passion for the yield physiology, growth and development etc. of the large-fruited tomato. So i completely share your passion, and wish that excellent outcomes like Bwine OTV happened far more often. I have some careully calculated crosses going each year for 1 trait, the results are usually interesting but not what i was hoping for! Good luck! g

Spudakee Purple vs Cherokee Purple

I've grown both the Cherokee Purple and Spudakee pretty regularly over the past 5 years and consider both to be excellent varieties. However, Spudakee takes the blue ribbon for better productivity and a bit better disease tolerance, probably due to the potato leaf foliage. This years garden was the very best I've had in years. I've canned over 200 quarts from my 25x25 ft patch. Successfully trialed beneficial nematodes for my potatoes and also my 4'x4' raised radish/carrot bed. Wonderful improvement in yield and fruit quality--I just hope they carry over and spread throughout my garden as they are a bit pricey. Actinovate continues to help control foliage diseases and I wonder if I'm not getting some carryover effect with this. No question that the continued use of mushroom manure is paying off. I will add more next spring. I trialed at least 8 new varieties of tomatoes and found Amish Rose to be a real standout. Dester's Amish and Vinson Watts were beautiful but not too productive. Will hope for improved adaptation to my environment and will try them again next year. Grew two Missouri Surprise plants from seed offered as a special from Marianna's Seeds. Both were very different in growth habit and productivity and did not reflect the "ALL AT ONCE" ripening affect that I experienced with the original Dr. Lambeth seeds circa ~1970. Saved seeds and will retrial next year. I think I might have recovered Tefft's Old German from 5 seeds discovered in an envelope tossed away in a dresser drawer many years ago. Looks very promising--will do 4 or 5 plants from seed saved this year. Hallelujah! This is my first post since spring as I have been fully challenged with garden management, canning, and fighting the stinking deer! Deer control finally absolutely achieved after abandoning sundry natural, green, and folklore tryouts in favor of an electric fence. Now that do work! How satisfying it was one evening to see daddy deer leap at least 6 ft into the air, bleat, turn and head for the woods!

Glad you got it, Larry! Sorry about your loss-great tomatoes, especially home crosses, are like members of
the family!

I got Dixiewine and the sisterline to Big Cheef (maybe
it's larger than BC). I've grown out some of the F3 Brandywine/NAR and it'll be interesting to compare
Dixiewine to them-they're all RL and PL reds (all appear
the same). Bill has said elsewhere that he may recross
Brandywine and NAR for sale on Marianna's site next year
for anyone interested in looking at the various genetic combinations-maybe some good pinks like I've seen discussed. Anyway, it might be fun for some of the younger
members to try some of Bill's crosses and find a favorite
to stabilize and name.

I think I've probably been near the areas in PA/Ohio you
mentioned-doing wear tests on jeans worn in underground
mines (Consol) near Washington, PA and in strip mines
in Ohio-beautiful countryside. Darlene

Yes, we are blessed with some of the most varied and beautiful country in the US here in what I call Pennsyltuckie!

What struck me 30+ years ago when we moved here was the deep green color of the leaves, the twisting country roads through valleys and hills, seams of coal exposed wherever roads were cut around and beside hills and mountains, and the evident humor and industry with which the folks in
West Virginia, eastern Ohio, and western Pennsylvania
addressed their lives.

I worked in the coal industry for awhile also, Darline.And
I was in mines run by Consol near Washington, PA. And, oh my, tomatoes seem to love the weather and well tolerate the the mostly soso soil we have here.
