Awesome new pics and updates everyone! I'm glad lots of folks got some good, soaking rains too. Last Thursday afternoon I was caught in the heaviest downpour I've ever seen here in over 12 years. Amazing! Tons of rain water in my rain barrel right now, and it only collects from about 20% of the roof surface! Mary, you should definitely get some rain lilies, they're just so easy and they absolutely do not need to be on life support (automatic irrigation)! Just plant them, water them once every ten days or so when they seem active, and forget them. They're great, and so easy! Congrats on your pumpkin bloom, Xica, so nice! Keep us posted! Thanks for the nice comments on my little blog, it's a fun little outlet for me. Oh, you can plant those desert bluebells (Phacelia campanularia) any time, but when I am introducing them into a garden for the first time I wait until November to sprinkle them around the garden. They'll pop up in late winter and bloom in spring. Once you let some go to seed, you'll never need to plant them again, LOL. Awesome pics and plants as always, dlg421! I love your garden! jadie-- how funny! Yes let's def keep each other posted on progress. And funny, it was sun sugar I picked up, I forgot ; ) How interesting that the currant tomatoes are completely different species! I obv know nothing about tomatoes-- I only tried growing them in the first place because a little produce stand not far from me sold little market packs of currant tomatoes and I got tired of spending $5 on them each week (or more). I love them so much! They weren't labeled beyond just "currant tomatoes" so I have no idea what they are really. I know I love roasting them w some olive oil and salt and a little garlic and making that my "sauce". Mmmmm. Sometimes adding other veggies but the tiny little tomatoes are always my fave thing in the mix. Just pop so nicely in your mouth and not all seedy and slimy inside if I eat them raw in a salad. With larger tomatoes, I usually spend a good amount of time cutting that slimy stuff away. I don't have time for that. Plus the tiny ones are so darn cute!!! I've read up a little now on these Tess's ones and I'd love to try them but don't want to bother w seeds again yet. Hopefully they'll be available in plant form sometime; they certainly sound popular enough!

Can I un-hybridise Sungold by planting seed from F1 and selecting spacific qualities? **** You certainly can try, but many have gone before you in trying to do that without much success. Please note that in a post above Lee mentioned that there already are two decent stable OP derivatives, and I had posted elsewhere that a Sungold III was in the works as dehybridized by Reinhard Kraft in Germany, who also did Sungold Select and Sungold Select II that Lee mentioned. ****** (Will the plants produced from planting seed from F1 be an open pollinated variety?) No. An OP selection is only OP when all seeds saved give rise to the same plants/fruits. That is, plant out some F2 Sungold Seed and you're going to get some red ones and some yellow/orange ones and they won't all be the same size and they won't all taste the same. So you make a selection, save those F3 seeds, plant out, make a selection and on and on it goes until as I said above, all seeds saved give rise to identical plants. It usually takes several F generations, from maybe 4 to 7 to get a fully genetically stable OP. But that also depends on the genetic background of a variety, which of course for Sungold no one knows what the genetic input was to breed it, save what I say below. (Can I determine the parents of an F1 using the above?) No. Modern hybrids have many genetic inputs, they aren't the result of crossing two varieties as was common with much earlier varieties such as Big Boy and Better Boy and Ramapo, all hybrids. All you know is that any variety with flat trusses such as Sungold have the currant variety S. pimpinellifolium gene bred in them that determines the flat truss trait. Carolyn
