Told you I'd have brug blooms by this weekend...

Can't remember who all I said it to but I remember saying it a coupe of times while describing how I overwinter mine. Well the first bloom actually opened night before last. Just got around to getting a photo this afternoon.

They are a lot of work this way but I'm about to go sit on my pergola and enjoy a faint scent of Heaven...

And a couple of other things I shot while out there.

How many different types of brugs do you grow/overwinter?

Everything is just beautiful and you are right--the smell of blooming brugs is heavenly.
Now, here come the questions: mine only bloom later in the summer. How do you get yours to bloom early? Is it the particular variety you've chosen?
Which types have you found to be especially cold hardy here? I'm assuming you plant them in a protected spot.

Daniella - I'm trying to follow the advice - keep them root bound. I don't want to up them to pots. But some are in those clear cups - and a couple are almost all roots - they wilt if they're not given water every two days. (at 72-75 degrees) - to me - that's telling me - oh ohhhhhhhh - need more pot room. Here's one for you gurus out there. Soem are in dark green tumbler cups, and others int he cheaper clearish cups. Not that I haven't lost some in the clear ones - but the roots - and those in the "clearish" cups - seem to be doing better. Does that have something to do with the roots receiving some light? It's just something I'm noticing. Is it just a coincidence? There are those int he green cups doing ok - but right now - as they're trying to get going - it seems the "clearish" cups - those are doing better.

Honest, the secret is good planting soil that leads to good root systems that in turn leads to good growth above the soil. If you stop to think about the soil these grow in naturally, the mostly grow in the outer edges of treed areas and on valley floors, both of which are high nutrient areas from decaying/deposited plant/tree foliage. The roots are the plant's engine so good planting holes makes for good top growth. Also, those particular Brugs were 2nd year seedlings, the subsequent years after I cut those back to bring in for the winter, they never grew quite that tall again. I do not use Osmocote, I used a granular fertilizer in the planting holes that is 6-12-6 combination if I recall correctly, along with the mushroom compost. I also add grass clippings all summer long to the Brug gardens, and 12" of leaves in the fall but now I maybe only fertilize 2X's during the growing season. Remember too, I have been playing with Brugs and their needs for 10-12 years. :)

I, too have a G. mihanovichii var. friedrichii! I guess they can be hard to distinguish, but I've read that the main difference between the mihanovichii and friedrichii species, is that the former's flower color is yellowish and the other pink. I've also read that the mihanovichii stays very small, and the friedrichii grows to about 4" in diameter. I have a roughly 2" in diameter specimen, and when I first bought it, it had two offsets at the base. I removed those, and this summer another started at the base. I also get a ton of flower buds to remove! I've been doing this since I got the plant, and it didn't seem to grow any quicker, but I now know I had it in insufficient light. It's now maroon and quickly growing!! Indoor light just doesn't cut it. Great seedlings! When mine gets older, l'll have to grow some of its offshoots!

Regina, I don't know enough about it myself, but all along, I've had the bottom leaves turning yellow. Probably like 1 or 2 per week or so and I just cut them off. They keep putting more leaves out. Anyone with any more Brug experience out there that may know if we are doing something wrong? Also, my flower has none of the wonderful scent that I've heard about. Even at night, I have gotten down on my knees next to it, and I really just smell a slight fragrance. Maybe different types have more powerful scents. Katie

Thanks, Brandon. I did not know you could plant them in smaller buckets like that, which makes moving them much easier.

I was looking for that. I have a PDF somewhere I need to put online.

By taking in good sized root balls and good sturdy, already branched trunks, I get blooms much sooner and get a much longer blooming season. From "stick" to something like I posted above can be one to three years depending on the cultivar and the conditions you plant it in.

Oh, and how much you feed them.

Okay - I have to figure out how to get my name on a stick at the fall swap. I came home with two devils trumpets - but I LOVE the picture in the link Brandon gave with you standing UNDER one of those Angel Trumpets. That is gorgeous!! But - to be fair - the Devils Trumpets sure are happy here...I can't wait to see them bloom.

What are the purple blooms on the last picture?

And is that RED yarrow? :D Love the classics...reminds me of home...

Did I get the ruella from you? If so - it LOVES Chattanooga weather - it is growing faster than the weeds in the yard!
