Suggestions for Medium Sized (8-12oz) Tomatoes

Hi all,

I'm still relatively new to tomatoes outside what you find at the local big box stores, so, trying all kinds of new varieties.

A couple years ago, I ended up with quite a few very large varieties and find it difficult to use the larger 1-2lb varieties, not to mention the generally lower number of the ones I've tried.

So, last year I avoided the big ones, but, ended up with mostly smaller varieties. While I like some of those, I was missing the mid sized slicers/sandwich tomatoes.

Some mid sized ones I have tried are Cherokee Purple, Indian Stripe, and Bush Champion. I plan to plant Indian Stripe again this year.

Looking for suggestions for relatively productive mid-sized slicers - preferably indeterminate (heirloom or hybrid, either is fine).

There are hundreds of them. If you go to tomatogrowers.com and type 12 ounce in the search bar you'd likely get 4 or 5 pages of listings to choose from. :)

I can recommend Supersonic, Rutgers, Champion (not Bush), Mule Team, Black Krim, Jet Star, and Carbon off the top of my head that fall into that category.

Thanks, Dave! That's the problem - there's soooo many to choose from, and of course based on the seller's descriptions, they're all absolutely wonderful! ;-)

That's why I was looking for some suggestions. Tomatogrowers is where I will likely purchase from, unless there's something really compelling somewhere else.

2) I grow my tomatoes in 18 gal containers and usually end up fertilizing at full strength every weekend when they have put on some mass & are growing robustly. The increases in either strength or frequency would/should be most closely tied to temperatures, planting mass, and your watering habits, so it's difficult to offer a one-size-fits-all answer to the question. Your plants will tell you if you make it a point to observe them closely. Soon, it will be second nature to 'know' when to fertilize after only a glance or based on experience. You actually want to be able to anticipate your plants needs and fertilize just before they experience the effects of any deficiencies. 3) I'm familiar with the product, and know that it forms insoluble precipitates when mixed with some fertilizers, but I can't tell you which ones. I know that the FP fertilizer when mixed with ProTeKt does form a precipitate, but I'm unsure if the same occurs with the LL. I've never had a need for it. 5) No, by reducing the dosage of your fertilizer you limit N - to prevent a K deficiency, you increase the K supply. You didn't ask about using a different fertilizer - you asked how to make 9-3-6 work. ;o) By all means - use another fertilizer with lower N if you wish. A 2:1:2 ratio is what I would suggest. 6-2-4 is the same fertilizer as 24-8-16, it's just that the amount of 6-4-2 you would be instructed to mix into a given volume of water to reach a recommended dosage would be 4x that of 24-8-16. Probably won't help any since you're in PA, but where do you buy your ProMix bmoser? Last year I paid $40 for Fafard 15, in 2011 I paid $28 for an open bale of ProMix and haven't found it under $40 since. Nursery I've been buying from gives me 20% off too (I think they forgot last year) - they're going to get back to me for this year's price. But I only buy 1 bale a year. True Value has it, if you order online by 3/5 you get $10 off $75 order, buy 2 and deliver to store it comes out to $38/bale (I can save 1 bale for next year). I can get it for that from Premier distributor but it's a longer drive. Agway just ordered the HP and is waiting for delivery but they said it would be "about" $40. Jiffy organic starter which I tried last year and things didn't do well in, was $4.82 for 12 quarts at Walmart today. I didn't even look at the MG since I used that 3 years ago and it needed to be screened. Couldn't find the Burpee starter which wasn't too bad. I just went and bought "seed starting mix", not organic, but just peat moss and perlite, on sale and 26% off due to slits in bags, $1.25 plus tax for 8 quarts (15.625 cents/qt) at Job Lot. 7 cf is 209.455 quarts, at $40/bale that comes out to 19 cents/qt and the BX has limestone, wetting agent, biofungicide, and microbiota in it. I'm going to use the cheap stuff mixed with the Fafard and Espoma (bought at going-out of business sale last year) I have left and some pelletized limestone to adjust the pH, just to start seeds but looks like even at $40/bale the compressed Fafard or ProMix is less expensive than buying even the cheapest peat-based mix around, and you don't have to add anything to it. 19 cents/qt = $5.68/cf

There is a category of small and medium kitchens in the finished kitchens blog. It might help you to visualize the size of thing and get some ideas if you browse through that. There are a variety of appliances and designs to see, actually quite an eclectic mix of things. It really does put some perspective on the size of things. Also, just as a general note, an 18 cuft fridge is rather small. The suggestion was made to me that you should start with approx 5 cubic feet for each family member after a basic fridge of 12 cubic feet. Most modern day stand alone fridges are approx 20 cubic feet as an average. many are now up to 29 cubic feet, though I believe the largest counter depth stand alone is 25 cubic feet.......

ive reread a couple times.. where did he say he is in OH? ... trees dont mind clay.. its all about properly transplanting them in clay.. allowing them the couple years.. to work their roots into said clay ... if in fact you are in OH ... OSU should have tons of tree resources available online ... i prefer oaks over everything .. and in sand.. in my MI ... they grow 3 to 5 feet per year ... but the bottom line.. i am thinking.. you arent going to get much shade on top of a house.. in your lifetime.. no matter what you plant .. unless you are about 16 years old.. lol ... i call it thinking in TREE TIME ... your local tree frarm.. should be in the best situation to discuss what tree would be best.. in your local area ... ken

Your climate should be the primary factor in recommending tomatoes of the size you want.

Big Beef
Box Car Willie
Eva Purple Ball
Homestead
Rutgers
Momotaro
Sioux or Super Sioux
Druzba
Muleteam
Nepal
Gregori's Altai
Lynnwood

These would all be in the general size range you request. some of them are decent canners, others are good fresh. They can be sauced but IMO, these are not good choices for drying.

Thank you DarJones! I am feeling much less overwhelmed with these lists to focus on.

These will primarily be general purpose slicing, eating, salsa, etc.. What extra I have at the time will be added to paste tomatoes and canned.

Since you included hybrids I would try Better Boy, Lemon Boy and Orange Slice from Burpee. I have had very good luck with all three.

I did grow lemon boy one year before I started starting my own seeds. Since then, I've been trying to focus on things I can't get seedlings for locally. Orange slice is one I haven't heard of / seen before.

I think it was new last yr from Burpee. I raised from seed and the fruit averaged about 12oz and was round and smooth. I am growing a couple again 2012. Bought a Paula Dean kitchen scale last spring and am now an educated guy about tomato size. Tomato stories are like fish tales...lots of people guess and exagerate. A 24 oz tomato is larger than a softball. My biggest one last yr was a Mr Stripey about six inches wide, oblate and a pound and a half. I dont make a big deal about tomato taste because none are bad....some are just better. I buy the hot house ones in winter for salads and sandwiches as I am addicted.

Thanks, everyone! I don't know why, but, I am leaning towards Druzba and maybe one other in this category depending on how many slots I have open in the garden.

You don't say where you are , but I'm in Zone 5 WI and last year Abe Lincoln and Jet star did well for me.

I'm in Central IL. Temps are more similar to Chicago than St. Louis.

Mid size tomatoes I've had good luck with were:

Big Beef
Better Boy
Brandywine Red (Landis Valley)
Bradley
Traveler (also called Arkansas Traveler)
Rutgers

I've heard the Moreton Hybrid is good but haven't tried it yet.
