Sun Gold vs. Sunsugar
Comments (31)Jaune Flamme performs well in my garden. We grew it last year. Thinking about growing it again this year. It works/looks great in a colorful box mix. Our latest always under revision small fruit list includes: Jaune Flamme, Pink Ping Pong, Dark Galaxy, Kiss the Sky, Butter Apple and 4th of July. We're trying Napa Chardonnay and Brad's Atomic Grape this year too. I totally agree with the Sun Gold assessments. It's a love/hate relationship. We've decided to give Sun Gold/Sun Sugar a break this year and will not be growing them. Some of the small varieties we grew last year were Blush, Purple Bumble Bee, Green Zebra Cherry, Kazachka, Cosmic Eclipse, Jaune Flamme, Ron's Carbon Copy, Chocolate Sprinkles, Painted Pink, Black Cherry, Sun Sugar and Sun Gold. The clear winners were Kazachka, Painted Pink and Jaune Flamme. We haven't tried Esterina nor Orange Paruche but would like too. The feedback seems good for both. The seed swaps are done for now but the start list still seems to get modified daily. The countdown has started for us. 4 weeks until we start seeds. Shell...See MoreSun Gold - Farmer's Market
Comments (7)Odds on it being the F1 Sungold? No can do. The cost of any F1 hybrid seed is higher than the OP's but I don't know where you live your page just says US, so I can't even give you odds on whether you've got the F1 or an OP. Some market gardeners might use an OP. but I guess I'd say the odds are it's the F1, when pushed. LOL Many folks detect a special scent to the foliage, I don't. That last one you mentioned was named Chocolate Cherry by Aaron Whaley who bred it, so the name you have is backwards. Many folks have grown Chocolate Cherry, Brown Berry ( bred in the Netherlands) and Black Cherry ( bred by Vince Sapp, now deceased, the husband of Linda Sapp who owns TGS in Fort Myers, FL. And do that to see which one they like the best, and I'd add Kazachka, also a black cherry to that group. Carolyn...See Morewill the real sun gold please stand.
Comments (14)JWR, I'm not sure there is an absolute answer based on so many intangibles but in my past experiences, Sun Golds have been the biggest plants of any variety I grow. Eight feet tall and then continuing growth back down -- with a wing-span almost as big. This year I purposely relegated it to a non-primo spot because I knew it was both bullet-proof (from a disease standpoint) and overly productive for my family. My single plant is just hitting the top of its five foot cage but is still producing beyond our needs. I've always wondered when I've read about folks growing multiple plants of Sun Gold. The past couple of years my single plant has supplied the entire neighborhood!! Terry Light Oak Hill, Virginia...See MoreAre sun golds cherry tom seed saveable
Comments (4)I really don't have the room to experiment, just hoping for an identical harvest as this year. Maybe one of the nurseries will have them again next year. Carolyn, you mentioned the aroma of the plant; I think the mosquitoes are attracted to them as well. When I'm picking these babies, I'm getting swarmed by the little beggers. Very uncomfortable. Another home in the neighborhood gets visited by my wife doing homecare and when she works with her patients outside the same thing happens to her. There's a sungold plant near her as well. They are tasty though. (the tomatoes that is) Speak to ya, elliot...See Moremiesenbacher
