Using carpet to establish beds

I just moved into a house in the coastal area of the panhandle of Florida and have an expanse of grass surrounded by the standard 6 ft. board privacy fence in my backyard. I want to establish several fruiting bushes and small trees from figs, pomagranates to satsumas. Those will go in the sandy "soil" this fall. Under and in front of them and including unplanted areas on the fence line, I want to establish a four foot deep bed ( 2 ft for front vegetable plants) that surrounds the back yard along the fence line. The backyard faces south and is mostly sunny so it is perfect for growing vegetables along the fence for now.

I just had all the wall to wall carpet and underpad removed to replace with with wood flooring and saved it in four foot wide rolls to use to establish the beds. I can build the beds and divide the areas off for planting in the square foot method.

My question is: What is the best way to build the beds using the carpet as a base?

I think I will have to wheel barrow in hay bale by bale for mulch this fall and winter. I have been saving all paper products that will decompose readily and much of the kitchen garbage already goes to the compost area but mulch has been lacking and hard to find. I am new here and so still searching out sources.

My first thought is this: What is the carpet material? Will it actually break down? Or, are you going to pull the carpet up after it kills the grass in the area?

Thanks for your response.
I could roll it back after it kills the grass but I hoped to leave it in place. The carpet is synthetic. The carpet padding looks soft and will probably break down quickly. I have heard of carpet squares being used for a square foot bed and almost all carpet is synthetic nowadays. I need to do this on a larger scale and then mark the squares off with string for the square foot organization.

They can get out of control. But they are easy enough to remove. If you want a care free cover crop, I would not use strawberries. I plan to eventually remove them as the blueberry plants becomes bigger. I may switch to a small low growing flower. I have a large ornamental garden in the front of my house and I added strawberries there as a ground cover too. To avoid weed removal. Weeds still form, but a lot less of them. They are not the perfect ground cover. Strawberries are only productive for a few years anyway so removing older crowns is something I constantly do anyway. And the payoff is nice!

once a year.. shapren your shovel.. and just re establish the weed free zone ... come on.. you can do it .. lol .. now.. no way in the world.. i would plant in a tree this time of year ... i would .. in the pot its in now ... pot it into a much larger pot [no root disturbance].. and backfill the pot.. so it wont blow over in every wind .. and the bigger pot will keep the smaller pot cooler ... i would then plant the tree in the proper planting time for your area ... in my MI.. it april BEFORE it leafs out ... just because you buy it ... does not mean its the right time to plant it ... also.. i would never put a tree on irrigation ... after a good soaking in.. they simply dont need that much water .. once a week.. insert finger. and find out if it needs water .. might be a month, with good mulch.. before it needs to be watered again .... see link for planting and after care ... or.. just wing it.. go ahead.. plant it ... live and learn ... ive done that.. win some. lose some ... especially if you have a guarantee from the store ... ken https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub

I'll also weigh in on the same side as mxk3 since I've never lost a perennial due to transplant shock. I've lost them to neglect when I set them down and completely forgotten to keep them watered and even then, I set them in the shade, water them and figure the roots take longer to die than the top growth. Whew! When I designed my garden beds, I had plenty of time to devote to bed layout and winter sowed 550+ milk jugs of perennials/shrubs/trees. They're all still here and are thriving. "My question is, is it feasible to pot up these perennials now or should I wait until they go dormant?" You can absolutely do as you wish. I thought you wanted folks who'd done it to chip in and share their experiences. Good luck! When I look around my little green acre (yes, I have an acre), I'm amazed at what I've accomplished and also smile because it pleases my eyes.

I did that in my guest room - no problem at all. The carpet is pretty low pile and the rug is a fairly thick sculpted type oriental. I have no pad under the rug. I also have a very short, dense wool oriental rug on the carpet in my living room. That also works fine. I have all these rugs on carpet because I moved from a house with wood floors to one with more carpet. I hope to get rid of the carpet someday when I feel like moving everything again. So then I will need the rugs and in the meantime I can't stand the plain beige carpet. In another room I have a thick wool runner that covers the width of carpet from the deck door to the wood floor in the dining area. It has no furniture on it that holds it in place so it ripples a bit. I need to find a way to keep it flat.

From what I've read, it seems everyone who used carpet leater regretted leaving it. I'd be far more willing to leave a cardboard bottom on your boxes that a carpet one, or maybe use the carpet ro smother the grass, then build the box in the dead spot left by removing the carpet.
But in the end it's your garden and your carpet.

this is the first time i have put anything on a "thread" so forgive any faux pas. many years ago i used synthetic carpet on the paths of my garden. i wouldnt do it again for a million bucks. too many problems to list. good luck

ROFL, you did fine carbu. I tried carpet a couple of years ago, and I wasn't happy with it at all. I have a friend who says she had to spend a few hours unweeding it to pull it up as it hadn't deteriorated at all and wasn't preventing weeds. Obviously, they just grew through it. Our area is very rainy, though, it might be different in area to area.

Mostly to get rid of my old carpet and not fill the landfill with it, I used it to kill the weeds next to my house. For me it worked for years, however I did not intend to garden in this spot, I eventually turned it into a pattio area. The carpet worked well for this purpose, I don't think i would keep it in place if I wanted to grow a garden.

I have heard that under some conditions mosquitos will breed underneath carpet used outside. Maybe your sandy soil drains too fast for this to happen, but if it doesn't, you may find a problem there. I have used carpet to smother grass short term, but find the solarization method works best.
