Ideas for another gardening class?

My first attempt at teaching a free public lecture on a gardening topic (seed starting) was a mixed success. I focused too much on sceintific stuff and ran out of time before I could get through all of the real "applied" stuff. Using what I learned from the first class I think I'd like to try again with a different gardening subject.

I'm looking for ideas of possible topics that I might teach. I feel like I could present a lecture on almost any subject but I need to find one that the general public would be interested in. This rules out some of the stuff I'd like to teach such as: "The Theory of Hydroponic System Design and Construction" :(

Since I'm sure most of the people here act as "garden advisors" answering questions about gardening from friends, family, and co-workers; what subjects do you most often get questions about?

So far I've considered:

Â Pruning Techniques

Â Integrated Pest Management

Â Basic Landscape Design

What do you think would make a good topic for a 1-2 hour lecture sometime this summer or fall?

One thing I would like to know more about is rooting various trees and shrubs. I have had success with easy stuff, like brugmansias, but would like to do conifers and dogwoods. Rooting mediums too.

I like your hydroponic idea. I have messed around with semi-hydroponics with a couple of my orchids but would like to have a set up for things, like tomatoes for example, in small spaces.

I'm in zone 5 Nebraska with cold winters (as low as -20) and hot dry summers (late August to September was mostly 90-100+ with no rain). I'm with Kim on the daily, weekly, and monthly temperature extremes of 50 degrees or more. This week, we had 90 degrees in eastern Nebraska while western Nebraska got three feet of snow. Inevitably, the next day was when the tornadoes started sweeping through the area with the crazy weather extremes. The ground is mostly loamy clay and on the alkaline side, so rugosas will grow OK but better with a little supplemental sulfur. As with Lori Elf and Kate, we can grow most classes of roses reasonably well, except for the teas, chinas, and noisettes, and I have a few of each in my warm spot. Some modern and early HTs and floribundas won't survive our winters even with pampering, but there's little way to know this without trying. The rose classes that I recommend as "bullet proof" ones that thrive to new rose growers in our zone include Hybrid musks, polyanthas, modern shrubs (particularly Lim), large flowered climbers, and Austins. I'm sure the gallicas, albas, and centrifolias also do well, but I haven't learned to appreciate the once-bloomers in my yard. We tend to be on the dry side so blackspot isn't as bad as it is out east, but we're not free of it as Diane reports in Idaho. It's not bad enough to slow things down here much. Cynthia

Cricket, It would have been wonderful if you could have made it. I think we are just on the cusp of these practices being much more widely implimented; even on an institutional and municipal scale. Locally, St. Ambrose University in Davenport, is doing some very creative things to address some very old, lingering storm water issues that have plagued their campus (and everyone down stream from them) for years. I also hear about good things at Grinnell College. The folks in Iowa City are starting to also make some inroads. I keep hearing about their "Peninsula Project". The concept is quite simple: use gravity to transport the storm water already collected by your gutters and coax it into an area where it has a bit of time to soak in. The tricky part (as with any garden) is making it visually appealing throughout the entire year. I constructed three entirely different types of rain gardens to experiment with planting schemes -- the technical stuff is pretty straightforward. One of the planting schemes was a recommended planting design straight out of the book. Without a doubt, in the "looks department", it comes in dead last -- not ugly but it won't bubble your hormones either. In talking with the architect and his associate designer after class, we all concluded that the designs coming from the "experts" use far too many different plants. When one limits the pallet to perhaps five or six different plants and creates drifts, the effect is much more pleasing. I can show that principle when comparing my own gardens. Anyway, the best information on this topic will not be found in books but rather in a very nice, 32 page booklet put out by the University of Wisconsin. I ordered these and handed them out at class. However, the very same booklet is online in PDF format, which anyone can download for free. It is non technical and easy to understand with lots of great pictures and diagrams to help one understand. Not sure if there are any market gardeners on here. Just wondering if anyone is attending the class that starts tonight in Chickasha. It is 8 wks long at the extension office. I dnk if it is too late to register. I will be attending with my DH. All other classes I have been to with the Noble foundation & ext office have been great, so I am hoping this will be another good one!

I took a plant ID class taught by Jamie Inashima and it seemed pretty good but I had to go out of town for an extended period of time and couldn't complete it. Still I attended at least 5 or so classes and she seemed professional and knowledgable. It seemed on par with the plant ID classes I took at the New York Botanical Garden (which were very good).

I second the recommendations above and would like to add greenhouse design.

Dual topics like rooting/grafting/propagation or greenhouse/hydroponics might also work and draw an even bigger crowd.

Landscape design is a strong possibility for a topic to get taught. Of all the ideas I've had that is the one I'm "most qualified" to teach. Not that I would let a little thing like being unqualified stop me from teaching something else, but it would be nice to offer some credentials to my prospective "students".

I was thinking that rather than just sitting in a classroom showing powerpoint slides, it would be cool to do a walking tour through a well-landscaped neighborhood with stops to talk about the various elements of the landscapes we pass.

What type of audience are you teaching? We need to know their level before I can give any advice. If it is the general public, then I would ask them or the person in charge of the meeting if there are any particular concerns or topics that the audience has or would prefer to hear. I am a Master Gardener and this is how I have prepared for my audiences. If they haven't had any topics then I have started one class with the basics of soil and dirt, moved up to composting, then fertilizing, then watering techniques and on up from there.

The Legendary Mr. Holman (heretofore know as "No-Show Lucas") will be speaking on "Drought Tolerant Perennials and Annuals".

Ya'll need to hook up and drive down together next week so he doesn't get lost or nod off. Since Lucas finally made an appearance at the '07 fall MTPS I think it only fitting that we pass down the moniker and dub you "No-Show Ryan" until you rectify that circumstance.

Well Coop, I was contemplating on hitting you up do a lecture on Hydro's anyway but the Landscape thing sounds even better! A walking tour through the HHSP wouldn't work and I wouldn't want to see any elicit unauthorized laundry cart racing down the paved park path but a static "standing" lecture would be cool! :-)

Go ahead and mark your calendar anyway even if you donÂt want to do a lecture you should still come to the spring and fall swaps.
