I found an inexpensive source of mini-containers.

I was at Target a couple of days ago and found these inexpensive 6" vases that seem ideal as micro-terrariums. I'm just starting to put this one together with several micro mini sinningias. Substrate is hydroton, with perlite on top, with a growing layer of long-fiber sphagnum and cactus soil. Pic is below. More plants may go in when warmer weather returns, but if these mini-sinns live up to their reputation, that may not be necessary. Pic below.

Any advice for this newbie?

1) Always under plant rather than over plant unless you need a terr that looks "instantly full" as you might for a wedding center piece or "get well" gift. Under proper conditions, a little terr like that will fill before you know it.

2) Always use less water than you think you will need. You can always add more if you really have to, but drying a terr out that has been overwatered (especially with a small mouthed container like that) before the mistake kills the plants can be virtually impossible.

3) Even though a micro Sin. like tend to like it quite humid, I'd recommend removing the plastic wrap. Moist stagnant air is often conducive to mold/fungal growth. Leaving the wrap off will allow for some air exchange but should still retain humidity quite well. Also, should the container get too warm, leaving the wrap off will allow the heat to escape rather than quickly building to lethal levels.

4) Place the vase where it will receive bright indirect light. If the terr is for a windowless desk area/cubicle, you will need to provide supplementary lighting near the vase. Overhead office lighting will not be sufficient.

5) Avoid fertilizing. With fresh media fertilizer should be unnecessary and the use of fertilizers is likely to result in lethal build up of mineral salts.

6) Do NOT water with tap water. Use RO water, rain water, or distilled water to avoid lethal build up of mineral salts.

Oh, and thrift stores like Goodwill/Salvation Army and garage sales can also be good container sources.

I made some of my stands from pvc pipe and plywood, and put shop lights on them. One stand I made from a 2-shelf plant stand I purchased, and added shop lights to it. What I will do next time instead of the pvc, is to find the stands such as they have at Cosco, or at the office supply store, or Sams, or any of those types. About 3 shelves, from crome or black wireing, on wheels, very strudy. I would put some clear plastic across the bottom of the shelf, and place my reservoirs on that. And suspend shop light from the shelf above with some clever type of wire or hooks. Lights need to be about 12" about lights -- but I have one stand (for minis and semis and leaves and such) where the lights are about 6 inches above the plants. I have seen bakers racks and bookshelves and all kinds of things used for shelving units. I have used cup hooks for the underside of one shelf to hook lights on to. Millions of possibilities!!!! At least we're recycling the plastic. I'm getting more enviro conscious and sometimes think of all that junk that doesn't break down. I'm old enough to remember when we didn't have it, think they called it polyurethane then when it first started getting popular. It might have been around, just didn't have much in our house until then. I also remember recycling cans during WWII. My mom would cut the lid out of the bottom, put both top and bottom lids inside, and then crush it, probably by stepping on it. I've never seen a need for a trash compactor. I tear up cracker boxes and similar or step on them to flatten, cut up cardboard I don't put out for recycling. We now have bins for recycling glass, plastic and paper, I'm trying to cooperate but sometimes it's easier to throw it in the trash than keeping it until you have a bin full. It's not very cost effective yet.

Was reaching for the leftovers from the last few days to warm up for dinner tonight. I discovred there was a clear, plastic container with celery sticks that was purchased in the grocery store a few weeks ago with intention on using them when I make tuna fish up. Both the 3 oz. can of tuna and these celery sticks got pushed to the back of refrigerator, and forgotten until tonight. I drained the water off the celery and laid it out on paper towel to dry. It wasn't as crisp sitting in that water as it was when they were probably put in there but I'll probably throw most of it out anyway..but not the container. It is 5 inches tall. WhooHoo! Enough for holding soil for seeds. Will punch hole in clear top and bottom for drainage and circulation and light. Look around in your produce section and you might find fresh fruit put up in these same containers. I know they put fresh pineapple in them, as well as watermelon. I don't know if they come like that or the produce dept. makes them up but think they are shipped to store like that. Sometimes the stores will sell you containers like this. Our women's church group was able to buy this size and larger for homemade soup that they sold to raise money for their mission project or for their scholorship fund. I kept two from my soup I bought about 2 yrs. ago so they will be put to use for WS too. I know these don't take the place of gallon jugs or 2 liter bottles but when you don't have those, you implement with something else.

Brenda, last I checked...people weren't in danger of becoming rare or extinct. I don't care about their poverty..that is NO excuse for poaching. It is in-excusable for major corporations to buy that which was poached from state and federal lands, which belong to ALL of us, then turn around and sell it for profit. There are many, many government programs available to the poor...from pre-natal care all the way up to elder care programs and hospice. Including free college tuition, work training, food, medical care, etc. I have been really poor...I have lived on Ramen Noodles and tortillas and potatoes for months at a time, yet I never felt the need to steal. Heck, I was unemployed and uninsured when I was diagnosed with MS..and I didn't go hold up the corner store to pay for my tests and treatment. I used every government/private program I could use to do that which needed to be done..after all, I had already paid for it many times over. What these folks are doing is stealing, and what they're stealing is our natural heritage. And they're stealing it from each and every one of us, and our children and grand-children. People who go on "plant rescues" with reputable organisations don't turn around and sell the dang things to the highest bidder. Silverkat...If you can't beat 'em, join 'em? I'd rather not join 'em. And yes, boycotts do work. I have lots and lots of ethically collected or nursery grown and propagated native plants. I don't need Lowe's. The ethically collected plants and seeds are out there, all that's required is a little research. VERY little..people who grow natives are usually happy to admit their stock is on the up and up. If enough people cared enough not to buy those little baggies of dessicated native plants..well, there'd be no financial incentive to carry them in the store. Which would go a long way towards solving the problem, wouldn't it? april

All good points. I can't leave the plastic off the opening due to the regular presence of fungus gnats. I'll be starting periodic treatment of the non-terrarium plants with tobacco tea. For now, I ventilate on a regular basis 'by hand'. I'm still looking for more micro plants to add, have s. muscicola for another planting. What plants would stay small and not become overly aggressive?

I have used resurrection fern on bark sold on Etsy,lichens and mosses from local creek/woods,miniature begonias,mini af violets.....

Button fern is lovely,may need to trim back a bit....
