Oh the horror!!! yummy cake mmmmm

Send me the cake, sounds yummy! I love mocha, and don't like many store cakes but for some reason get hungry for plain white cake with white frosting (the old kind, now they use whipped sometimes).

Is it something you can freeze? I cut it in serving size pieces do that, but to keep the frosting nice you need the right container, and it takes up a lot of room.

Sounds nice, I'm at home with a cold and dessert would be a nice addition to my food stores right now. I know the feeling too of finding a lovely container. My husband started buying these peanut butter filled pretzel bites in wonderful plastic bins like the giant pretzel ones. Oh what's a girl to do.

How funny! It's so true that we buy things just to get the containers!

Actually, at the WSing class I did a few weeks ago, I told the attendees just that - that they would never look at any container the same way again. That they would buy things just to get the container.

I also told them about the bakery department in the supermarket.

Then I told them when they had eaten too much cake (to get the containers) and had to go on a diet to lose some weight, to head over to the produce department and check out the containers there, lol!

Now I'm getting hungry, lol. Wish I had some of that mocha cake now!

At least you are not telling your kids to empty more 2 liters :) Well, I am asking them to drink milk too....

We have rotisserie chicken at the store with the perfect container for starting seeds!!It's probably too shallow for WS but the chicken goes real good with a cold glass of milk! Even though I have three boys I still ran out of jugs-had to go dumpster diving today :-)

The first thing Hubs and I noticed when we joined BJs is that they have aisles with nothing but Winter Sowing containers, and they come with a bonus inside. There's the giant clear barrel which comes with bonus pretzel nuggets, and there's another clear barrel that comes with bonus cheezy poofs, and then they also put them in the bakery area too and they have WS containers with bonus gigantor cookies, and huge sowing trays with a bonus cake so big inside you need a party just to have enough people to eat it all up--and they'll write something on it to for you, Like Blessed Solstice or Let it Snow or In Winter it is Cold (not that they would understand but you know what I mean.) I've been eyeballing a container that comes with a bonus tiramisu inside, but Hubs deosn't like coffee so I'm stuck ;-(

Isn't it funny how gardeners are always looking at food items in the stores and thinking "Oh, that would be a perfect container for WS." I find that I'm doing it more and more these days. Especially in the bakery dept. The other day I was over near the salad bar and there were all types of nuts and chocolate covered pretzels(Yummy!)packed in deep clear plastic containers and I almost bought them "for the container" Yep, believe that one and I will tell you another one! Love those type of pretzel snacks.

Oh my gosh Trudi you had me laughing that they sell containers with a "bonus" inside them! That weas great!

Hey my hubbs loves those hard pretzels. I guess I need to get shopping.

At least we're recycling the plastic. I'm getting more enviro conscious and sometimes think of all that junk that doesn't break down. I'm old enough to remember when we didn't have it, think they called it polyurethane then when it first started getting popular. It might have been around, just didn't have much in our house until then.

I also remember recycling cans during WWII. My mom would cut the lid out of the bottom, put both top and bottom lids inside, and then crush it, probably by stepping on it.

I've never seen a need for a trash compactor. I tear up cracker boxes and similar or step on them to flatten, cut up cardboard I don't put out for recycling. We now have bins for recycling glass, plastic and paper, I'm trying to cooperate but sometimes it's easier to throw it in the trash than keeping it until you have a bin full. It's not very cost effective yet.

This morning hubby and i were driving into the big city,on the country road, there was a large ice cream container in the middle of the road, i didn't say any thing, but i was thinking,ha ha,hubby says, ''No, It is no good, it has a large crack in it",i burst out laughing, cause i was thinking it would be a good container,way to funny.Gotta love a guy like that eh.

Oh my Trudi, I was thinking the same thing, I belong to Costco and so many of the entrees come in great containers. We also have a local Wegmans supermarket and they have some great containers also. I have my kids keeping them for me. They are the perfect flat. I figure that I am recycling them by using them to ws and keeping them out of the landfill and eventually will end up with another beautiful flower bed. We are also recycling yogurt cups, I think they will be the perfect size for the heirloom tomato seeds I want to start.

Hubby and I shop at a wholesale grocery store once in a while. Prices are not that great if one is purchasing for personal use, but we sometimes get a bargain on a large size item or multiple buy. Anyway, they sell many sizes of those disposable plastic containers, and it always amazes us how expensive they are. One never really thinks when buying a food item in a plastic disposable container that the container may be worth more then the food.

You guys are missing the very best containers, altho' Trudi was close (I guess she should be, mother-of-winter-sowing...). STRAWBERRY CLAMSHELLS. Premade holes, 3" deep, perfect size, square, so it takes up little room and tucks in with all the others. Last year I had to eat a fat-free diet all summer, and found myself almost living on strawberries. Have to say, I could have eaten more of the free blackberries across the street, but that wouldn't have provided me with containers, now, would it?

Recycling is one of the best green aspects of WS. Now, I know we all do the happy dance when we see green--our type of green--but getting a second use from a product that has already been manufactured is practical. It's conservative of resources and it's conservative of wallet. So, if anything, with WS, we're 3G--triple green.

At my local grocery story they'll sell those deep plastic cake dishes with lid for 10 cents. I bought and used some a few years ago. They worked well for germinating the seeds but did get brittle and crack from exposure to the weather. Some would probably be thicker and better than others.

I recycle a fair amount of cardboard in the garden. Some I use as a mulch layer/weedblock under better-looking shredded wood, or as a base in lasagna-type beds. It makes a readily available source of "browns" in the compost, too, when I run out of fall leaves in summer.
