When can I expect Iris blooms?

Does anyone know when we should expect Irises to start blooming in midTN? I planted some a year ago last summer and I'm hoping that this will be their first season of blooms. :)

I assume that you are referring to Bearded Iris. Some of mine start blooming around mid-April. But I have lots of different kinds, and they are never all in bloom at the same time. I usually have about Bearded Iris in bloom for about 4 weeks.

My Siberian Iris bloom a little bit later, usually starting in mid-May.

I saw some in bloom along the road yesterday. Couldn't see what they were except they were Iris. I have one that will probably open in a couple weeks.

Probably won't bloom this year. Almost all buds are up already. You can tell for sure by gently placing your index and forefinger around the main fan or fans and sliding down. A 'pregnant' fan will have a slight bulge, from which a bloom stalk will emerge. Peat moss and Miracle Grow make for an acidy environment, and bearded iris do not like acid. I would use a bulb food fertilizer, possibly a little compost and forego the miracle grow. Also make sure there is sufficient drainage (you can add sand to the potting mixture, and make sure there is a hole in the bottom of the pot. Do not overwater). If you give it a large enough pot, good drainage and plenty of sun it should bloom for you next year. Laetiita

Hi Belkys, I have some plants in that age too. My daisy wilcox is 3 yrs old, was waiting for the bloom started an inflo, but it is triple branching instead..so no bloom this year on that one. Just bought another Daisy that is 4 years old and double the height, hope it blooms, want to see that bloom! suppose to be fantastic dern it. ha ..warmth has a lot to do with it too. On mine, have found some bloom and skip a year..some each year..so as they say on here, its up to the plant!! ha Just keep feeding and hope they bloom.. me too!! Am excited, my yellow aztec gold is about to open. I haven't had a lot of blooms, young plants..so one to bloom is so exciting. Karen B

Jim, if it were me and the bulbs that you've accidentally dug up looked healthy and viable, I would leave them in the ground. LOL, of course if it were me, I would probably be out there damaging those bulbs by "checking" on them every other day :). None of mine are in garden beds, they are in what looks like an inch and a half to two inches of grey chalk dust on top of rock.....they get no supplemental water and even through the drought the last couple of years, they bloomed beautifully in late summer/early fall. All of them are in full blistering sun. If you still have the name of the variety or the latin name of yours, you may be able to find more definitive information on that particular variety?? Orrr, when you bring me some of those pretty byzantine glads, I can give you some of my liatris, LOL! Good luck with it, wish I could be of more help...... Kristi

A few signs of spring..a few of those tall Trumpet Lilies I bought last year returning..I wonder if they will flower since we barely froze this winter? Lilium Regale Yellow trumpet lily 'African Queen' Red Castor Beans still blooming..they were protected under the Live Oak canopy My banana stands were not protected..just a touch of frost made them ugly Night Blooming Jasmine and milkweed..still butterflies around too.. What to do with the dormant waterlily tubs...I throw passiflora cuttings in there until I am ready to root them. I've left them in there all winter and they stay fresh..sometimes they root in the waterlily tubs lol. Ummm how long can you leave Bare Root body bags soaking? I'm pretty sure these two poor things have been in there for a month or more Lol! Blue Girl has a bud. I'm a bad bad rose mommy.

Here in Murfreesboro, the peak time for TB's usually starts toward the end of April and goes through the 3rd or 4th week of May (depending on the weather, of course. SDB's will arrive beforehand, Sib's will start sometime in May, with JI's after that. Most of the local iris shows will be the first week or two of May. Ours is May 7th, a week earlier than normal. Don't know the reason.

Usually Tattler, an sbd, opens about April 7 for me with the arilbreds about a week later. But I'll have Appleblossom Pink, an intermediate bearded, open tomorrow, April 1.

We have some that are already budding but oe of my customers in LaVergne has her's blooming now.

My SDB's have started opening up this week, "Ultimate", Bourgeois" , and "Scotch Hopper" so far.

I planted my iris in a location that receives sun from 2:00 until sunset. However, in the fall through winter to early spring this site receives only about an hour of sun.

This may be a silly question, but I didn't know if the lack of sunshine hours in the winter is of any relevance.

Thanks for any help.

My Siberian Iris 'Caesar's Brother' is in full bloom right now and I have one unknown variety purple bearded iris in bloom. The others are just now in bud.

Raney, how does Caesar's Brother compare with the regular non-varietal Siberians? I've been thinking about trying it, but wasn't sure if it is truly different enough to warrant purchasing one....I love my regular Siberians, which are just starting to bloom here in Madison.....

My other irises have been blooming for two or three weeks; heck, some are almost done! It's really been an early Spring AND Summer is following suit, it seems.

Siberians are blooming now here in west tn, some of the bearded have bloomed as well, but not all of them.
