Terrarium and Snakes?

Hello people, I don't normally post on the forums (I'm one of the guys that spend their time reading up and looking at all the amazing pictures with jealousy) but as the weather turns colder I'm getting more and more depressed. I can't grow things outside. The past few years I've done a few window sill plants and that's kept me content. Lately, though I've felt the urge to do more. So I've decided to try my hand at growing terrariums. I've done a bit of reading around and am surprised to see that no one starts their terrariums from seeds. Is that mainly because it's easier, or just because you see results faster? Or is it even possible to grow a terrarium from seeds?

I know, I've been rambling on about terrariums but the subject also mentions snakes. I have always wanted a pet snake. I can't explain why, perhaps it's just a guy thing, but I've recently discovered that my girlfriend is also interested in having a snake. Perfect, right? Why not make a terrarium for the snake? Well I'm not sure if that's even a good idea. We're planing on getting a corn snake, something relatively small and not to expensive. But everywhere I check suggests substrates of wood shaving, paper shredding, or outdoor turf. Can I even use dirt? And what should I grow in it? I'm planing to have grass in there, but I don't know what else. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize if I'm rambling. My girlfriend saw I was busy posting and thought it'd be the perfect time to go over finances with me.

I would recomend you spend quite a bit of time researching snakes and terrariums. A terrarium for cornsnakes sounds like it would be quite a bit too humid for cornsnakes. Alternatively I believe royal pythons like rather high humidity. As I said, read some books, search the web etc.

I don't deal much with the voles but I've heard you can trap them with a conventional mouse trap, baited with peanut butter. I do have several toads in the garden and once in a while see a snake but not often. You need to give toads shelter from the sun and a water source. You can buy fancy little "toad houses" but I just use terra cotta flower pots turned on their side and burried half way. For water I have a few terra cotta saucers buried to ground level and as a bonus they attract butterflies. I always transport any toads I find in the yard to the garden and some seem to stay. I've caught a few snakes and put them in the garden area but I don't think they take up residence there. Good luck...

atheris, Hi I like my username too :P. Well, I used to live in Louisiana and have a night/moon garden and grow lots of jasmine thus the name. However, now I've moved to the desert and it is in no way sultry, so I guess I should change it to dried up_desert_jasmine lol! I also have the arabian tea jasmine. I love it. It gives good daytime fragrance and blooms alot. Have you ever made/had jasmine tea? They are really easy to start from cuttings. The *new* tank idea sounds great too. I can see how I could get hooked on making those! Your snake is gonna be spoiled :D Do you have any photos of your snake? I wanna see her. How big is she now? Do you feed her frozen pinkies or large mice? Ok enough with the questions lol. To answer yours dh is a connotation people use on gw to refer to dear hubby or the better/worse half lol. karyn, Funny how the guys are the ones who don't like snakes. I'm not sure why mine hates them so much, he grew up in the desert so had friends that got bit by rattlers and such so... One time we were dove hunting and a rattle snake struck the back of his hiking boot. Luckily it didn't go all the way through. I love snakes though, spiders too but not the poisonous ones. I had the coolest yellow and black Orb Weaver guarding my bananas last summer. jblaschke, I agree that biodegradable would probably rot in a wet enviornment. What about clay/terra cotta? they are porous so moss could grow on the outside. The inside could be sealed (pruning seal spray works good for that- but would let it air out a few days before placing in the tank) so roots couldn't adhere. Not sure about the terracotta-just an idea. Probably should be careful of the clay pots made in Mexico though, because some mexican clay pottery contains lead. I am not sure what lead could do to a snake but it prob isn't good. ~SJN

Well what i did was i got a piece of plexiglass and placed it 1/3 of the length of the tank. My uncle secured it in place for me at his glass shop. I then filled the smaller area with water including a filter.I placed a turtle dock that you can get at any petstore for it to rest on. The bigger half i filled with subtrate (still experimenting). I placed 3 hides on the land part. I also put jungle vines on the back and sides of the cage so the chinese water dragon feels more secure in the cage. I also placed branches on the upper part as CWD love to climb. The subtrate gets pretty deep and is hard to clean so I only take the first 5 inches off then fill it back up. I replace it all ever 2 monthes or so. I'm working on making a stream going around the entire land part increasing in height as it goes around. Then when entering the water part making a little waterfall. It's a longshot but hoping it will work. I have an exoterra waterfall in there now but kinda sticks out so id rather it be more in the backround. It gets kind of crowded in there so i change it up every once in a while so my CWD doesnt get bored. I have a vibrating food dish for the worms i feed it. I also feed it pinkies crickets and the occasional feeder fish. I dont have any fish in the water part but im waiting to see if my stream idea is possible. That way when they swim through the stream it will be easier for Spike to pick them off. It took 3 summers to save up for the whole setup so it is kinda pricy. As for cage mates i dont know of any yet but possibly frogs, a turtle or something. I wanted to eventually put my anoles in, hoping if i keep them both well fed they wouldnt hurt eachother but my friend strongly discouraged it so i didnt bother. You may remember this thread from six years ago. It has had some periods of drought and neglect due to some of life's challenges. I've been working on my terrarium lately though. It's been interesting what I've been doing and the reasons why. Six years ago I had some micro miniature sinningias in the terrarium. After around a year they appeared to die out. I had not seen any of them, much to my surprise, until last summer when three clumps came up and started to bloom. They looked real good for several months and then when winter came they became stifled. I couldn't figure out what the problem was and then it occurred to me that the northern bay window, where they reside, gets into the middle 50 degree range at night. For rain forest plants the temperature range should be between 65 degrees and 85 degrees. The mid 50s is much too cold for them. Anyway now what to do? It turns out that I have a seedling heating mat. This mat is about the same size as my 10 gallon aquarium/terrarium. I also had the problem that the terrarium was sitting right on top of the cold bay windowsill. It's not too elegant but I put a couple of small 2x4s on the windowsill and put a plank about the size of the terrarium on top of them to get the terrarium off the sill. I will paint them later. I then put the seedling heater on top of the plank and the terrarium on top of that. I will post pictures. I figured that was the answer so I plugged in the seedling heater and observed. Oh, by the way, I went to the tropical fish store and got a thermometer that I could stick in the soil, so that I could see what the soil temperature was. Much to my horror the thermometer read 92 degrees. I was now cooking my plants. So to make a long story short (that ship may have sailed already though. lol) I bought a light timer that can be turned on and off in half an hour intervals. I may get a seedling mat heater sometime, but they are $32.00 on Amazon and that's a little rich for me right now. What I've done is turn the seedling mat on for an hour every other hour. At night the temperature goes down to around 68 degrees to 72 degrees and the daytime temperatures are round 76 degrees to 80 degrees. That temperature range is almost perfect. I got some micro miniature sinningias at my African violet Christmas party last year. I put those plants into the terrarium and they're just growing like gangbusters. One will be blooming in a couple of days and the rest are growing very fast. The original micro miniature gloxinias have not changed much but I figure as long as they don't die that's the best I can hope for at the time being. I keep a Candoia carinata carinata in a terrarium and he does wonderfully but then again this species is from the pacific islands around New Guinea so the humid environment inside the terrarium is just what the snake wants. It is always best to design the enclosure around it's inhabitant and their natural habitat. You should not create a tropical rainforest type environment to house a temperate snake species but try to simulate an environment that the snake would feel comfortable in. Corn snakes are very easy to care for but they do get quite big in adulthood. If you are planning on getting a baby snake you need to keep it in a small enclosure to monitor it's feeding etc. and then move it up to a larger enclosure once it is not so small. Many European reptile keepers house their animals in terrariums/vivariums but it is still fairly new here. When growing live plants you really have to plan on the eventual size of the plants involved or they will outgrow the terrarium or not grow well. You might want to try Kingsnake.com for info on the different snake species that are available and which one would be good candidates for keeping in a naturalistic set-up.

I've done {{gwi:568366}} with terrariums and snakes. It isn't hard. You just have to remember a few things. The snakes and plants both have special environmental requirements. Having a large collection of cacti with a tropical snake wouldn't work out so well. Stick to plants and snakes that have the same temp/humidity requirements. Keeping snakes in a terrarium also creates problems with cleanliness. The reason newspaper, shavings and astroturf are recommended is because they are easy to clean. A dirt filled terrarium is much harder. You have to scoop up after them like you would a dog and clean out any water feature you have often.

The best snakes for a high humidity settup are Pythons and tree boas. As for non-venomous snakes for high humidity, i'd say Boa Constrictors are your best bet.

I have 2 corn snakes who live happily together in a glass inclosur. I also have cat and they ate all the leaves off one of my house plants, so I placed the plant(not sure if it would live) in with the snakes and they love the plant and it is growing great. I have now seen they have found another plant to eat so I might reset up the snake to include the other plant. Corn snakes are great they don't get huge and their food is small. Read up and decide look in to which plants can/will grown in with the snakes.
