It looks great! The plants look healthy, and it seems to be a nice sunny spot for it. My only concern is that it appears as if you have a squash or two in there. Those are going to grow beyond the space you have allotted to them, possibly shading or crowding out some neighbors.

It looks great. Like ecopit said, things might get a bit crowded as I am finding out the hard way. This is my first year too, so live and learn! I love squash so if they crowd out some of the other stuff, so be it!

Looks good, do you know what kind of tomatoes those are? Determinate or indeterminate? I'm just thinking they might outgrow their cages if they are indeterminate.

thanks guys. i have one squash and its next to a couple herbs so i keep pushing it towards them. i have no idea what sort of tomatos they are. i was given a bunch of diffrent kinds and just planted all of them. with my luck, though, they'll outgrow there cages. so far the only thing to produce anything is the cayenne pepper, everything else is naked.

Alex, those tomatoes are fantastic!!! Did you trellis them using Mel's conduit and nylon netting? This is my first time with a vegetable garden and I'm using Mel's trellis structure for peas, cucumbers, and pole beans, but I wasn't sure if I should use it for the tomatoes. All my tomatoes are indeterminate and I have 4 plants, cherry and grape, along the back row of a 4x4 and 2 regular slicing ones in the row next to it. Someone suggested using bamboo poles and tying the stems to it using hosery, and then stapling the hose to the pole so it doesn't slip down.

I used conduit to build the trellis, and started with vertical pieces of cotton string, with a horizontal one along the bottom that they were tied to. You can see two of the vertical strings in the first pic. In the later pic you can make out the string, spiralling up the stem.

I ended up adding more strings to hold up the larger branches later in the season. Never had a problem with them cutting in to stems.

I pinched off suckers every other day before I went to work in the morning. I also twisted the stem around the string whenever I could.

All of those plants were indeterminate, but I think the reason that they did so well was they were right near the foundation of the house, which stored a lot of heat during the day and kept it warm at night. The soil was fantastic as well, I didn't do much except add peat and vermiculite.

Too bad I moved before I could harvest much! I left the plants for the tenants upstairs, and they feasted on tomatoes every day. Now I've got them hooked on gardening too. :)
