First Harvest from my First Veg garden (pics)

I never really wanted to grow vegetables, I am not interested in canning or freezing and the farmers markets are so much fun, but the BF insisted this year and I am loving it! its only 12x12 ft, but I know that it will at least double next year.

The perimeter bed has Basil, Catmint, Nasturtiums, Cosmos, Garlic Chives, and left over pepper and cucumber plants (cukes, peppers and zukes were from seedlings started indoors)

Inside the fence - lots of cukes (trained up the fence), zucchini, sweet and hot peppers, tomatoes, bush beans, eggplant, broccoli, brussel-sprouts, lobelia, alyssum, rosemary, oregano and lemon thyme.

Lovely harvest, and you are sure ahead of me, and I've got at least twice the space....well....maybe I'll get it right next year?

Oh - and you're in zone 4!!! Now I feel like a total loser, lol!

Thank you :) I live in Nova Scotia Canada. Here are two more that shows the veggies better and also one that shows the huge rock that I have to deal with. As you can see the cucumbers are a bit yellow but since giving them a bit of fert they have since perked up a bit.

Congrats on your first garden. As they years pass, the better you'll get...the more failures you'll discover...and the more successes you'll master. You're paying attention to not only what's growing well and what isn't...you're paying attention to how plants compete with each other in your environment. "I planted peppers in the ground and they all went crunchy. So I took them to the greenhouse and they gave me new ones." ...and it sounds like you've found one hell of a friendly supplier there. Good on them. Good luck with the rest of this season and next season, too.

Judy, I used conduit to build the trellis, and started with vertical pieces of cotton string, with a horizontal one along the bottom that they were tied to. You can see two of the vertical strings in the first pic. In the later pic you can make out the string, spiralling up the stem. I ended up adding more strings to hold up the larger branches later in the season. Never had a problem with them cutting in to stems. I pinched off suckers every other day before I went to work in the morning. I also twisted the stem around the string whenever I could. All of those plants were indeterminate, but I think the reason that they did so well was they were right near the foundation of the house, which stored a lot of heat during the day and kept it warm at night. The soil was fantastic as well, I didn't do much except add peat and vermiculite. Too bad I moved before I could harvest much! I left the plants for the tenants upstairs, and they feasted on tomatoes every day. Now I've got them hooked on gardening too. :)

Here's a quick shot of the baby figs of my main crop. They are about the size of my thumb. We just moved to a new house little more than a year now, so all of my trees are still rather young, so that means they provide me a bundle of that first year harvest excitement/happiness :) video

Wow! That's very impressive! All your plants look so healthy. Is the border made of redwood?

The beds were made from scrap boards I had at hand. Some of them are cedar, I think the others are oak and pine. The man that owned this house before me left quite a bit of nice lumber. I designed the garden based on the lumber I had. I may have to actually buy some next year when I expand.

The unhealthy plants aren't in the pictures - notice the tee-pee with nothing on it? I put in sweet peas that produced 2- 3 peas each and then died. Bush beans havent done well for me either - lots of insect damage, there has been some fruit production, but the plants are about the same size as when I put them in.

And yes T-Bird, Carmen Miranda was my first association so I had to include the pic.

Well there is always a few things the do not do well some years. the next year they do fine I guess that's why we plant a variety and successive plant. I think your garden looks great and so does Carmen.
