Comments (6)I built raised beds at home then went to a center that sells top soil by the bucket load (you dig it and take it away) and also compost, mixed the above in the beds. This was sucessful for all kinds of veg such as onions brocolli (mammoth crop) carrots beans etc etc everything except pepprs. The community garden was a couple years ago in another town maybe I should have soil tested in both locations to see difference. As far as light maybe they get shaded by super tall brocy plants....See MoreMy poor roses - no idea what I'm doing
Comments (18)No, I am telling you to take 2 feet off the top now. Others are saying cut it back to 2 feet in spring. I don't do that. I never cut my roses back that far. I cut dead growth off in late winter and shape the bush and usually need to take off 2-3 feet. I think you need to take some off now because it is growing leggy and scrawny, barren of foliage and bloom. Now, take 2 feet off the top, fertilize it, water it, mulch a bit (but not too close to the trunk). Then you can continue to care for it and then around Labor Day, give it some organic fertilizer or 8-8-8 and see your fall flush. You may/may not want to cut it back to 2 feet in late winter/early spring as suggested. I don't but some of my fellow rosarian friends do and their roses are prettier than mine. I just cannot stand to butcher that much at once. My husband has done that to some of our roses, and they looked great and got new basal breaks; the roses were gorgeous. Me, not so much of a cutter and wish perhaps I was. ;-) Ryan, just water now and take some top growth off, wait for some new reddish growth, give it some organic fertilizer or 8-8-8, keep watering and give it some fertilizer again around Labor Day and watch for your blooms to be more than you expect and larger in mid to late October. Then come back next February/March with a picture of the rose at that point and let someone direct you about pruning. You might get addicted to this stuff. I hope so. I think you will love it. P.S. I love your corner of the world. My family is originally from Richmond. This post was edited by patricia43 on Sat, Jul 26, 14 at 17:41...See Morecarrots... with apologies to sumala
Comments (10)Ill-Man, I'M impressed with your carrots! Love the photo! They look really tasty! Have you ever grown them from the tops of store bought ones? I've not done it with the scallions you mentioned before, but I have done it with carrots. I used to grow the greens that way for my parrots. I don't think they will ever get another carrot on them, but the greens get huge and lovely. You just cut off the top inch of the carrot and sit it in a shallow dish of water, and in a little while, you have lots and lots of greens. Marcia...See MoreJust curious - how are your annuals doing?
Comments (23)Actually, Carl, I thought some of the new guinea impatiens I bought were SunPatiens, but now that I look at your link, maybe I am wrong. I know I remember seeing the label, and remember them being more expensive, lol, and I thought I bought some. Either I did and never realized they weren't plain ol new guineas, or I just saw them and never bought them. And of course, this was the first year I threw away all my labels, telling myself they would just pile up in the bottom of my garden bucket and I would never look at them again... I do remember having some concern with the new guineas - I kept asking at the garden centers, are they more tolerant of sun than impatiens, or do they NEED more sun than impatiens? After all, most of mine are in pretty much full shade, so that little point made a big difference. Never got a clear answer, but most of them are doing well. I am really enjoying this summer! Normally I hate summer. I'm a gardener who hates the sun, hates the heat, hates the humidity, hates the bugs, and really dislikes most gardening chores, lol. The guy on the radio yesterday said "it's clear, sunny, and 87. It doesn't get any better than this!" And I said out loud in my car "Yes it does! How about clear, sunny, and 74?" But I am always mystified at all these people who love summer - give me spring or fall any day! But this year? It's still been too hot for me, but it has been relatively nice - cooler than usual, for the most part, lower humidity, and absolutely delightful evenings and nights for sleeping! Could use a little rain now though....:) Dee P.S. Edited to add, if only the flying clouds of gnats would go away, it would be almost perfect. I wonder if the trade off for great weather is dealing with the bugs? Not sure I'd take that one every year.... This post was edited by diggerdee on Mon, Aug 11, 14 at 21:58...See Moreyrdling
